Hmm well Pete Rose can't get into baseball's Hall Of Fame so I'd say yes

Except that's a radically different situation.

Rose is out because of literal gambling and potentially manipulating game outcomes, which is detrimental to the sport itself and hurt it for a long time.

Favre's getting in trouble for stuff that has literally nothing to do with football at all, and the only real argument to keeping him out of the hall of fame would be that shitty moralists feel like bad people shouldn't be honored in any way for their unrelated accomplishments.

It would be a more accurate analogy to Pete Rose to say that Tom Brady should never go into the hall of fame because of Deflategate.

It's difficult to take a thread seriously when a person claims to have never eaten grapes before. They are one of the most common fruits offered at school lunches and what not.

Maybe that's a new thing, but when I was in school I don't think they ever offered grapes even once. The only fruit we ever got offered was apples and oranges. Maybe pears every now and then.

And I wouldn't equate any food being offered in a school lunch program with being something everyone has eaten regardless. Because I'd say about 90% of the fruit they gave us as kids either got thrown out or the lunch ladies took it home. I'm not sure I've ever eaten a school lunch fruit in my entire life. In spite of the fact that I've actually ate apples and oranges and pears (and grapes!) on my own outside of school.

IMO thats what makes him a good "bad guy", the villain needs believable goals that make sense, even in a twisted way. When they don't, you have bad villains.

Weeeeeell.

People always say that it's better to have a deep and complex character that doesn't actually see themselves as the villain rather than a cardboard one-dimensional moustache-twirling villain who just does evil for the lulz, but it's more complicated than that.

Sure, that type of villain is great, but you also need a bit of contrast. The reason they seemed so refreshing for a while is because they were rare. We'd gotten so used to bad guys who were just assholes for no reason (especially during the Hays Code era when villains had to be 100% unsympathetic and weren't allowed to ever "win"), that having villains who suddenly made sense and who we could sympathize with was kind of interesting. Across multiple genres we started to see heroes who were less and less heroic and more flawed, and villains with more and more understandable motivations, with the lines blurring and the difference becoming less "hero and villain" and more "protagonist and antagonist".

But now it's kind of gone too far the other way.

Marvel's kind of reached a point where nearly every villain is a tragic misunderstood victim who's the mirror of the protagonist in some way. Which is a great villain to use... if you don't use it for every villain. Sometimes you just need to occasional pure monster or utter bastard just to act as a palate cleanser.

Sometimes you just want a villain like Klaw (a dirtbag who is motivated purely by profit) or Red Skull (a crazy bastard who wants to rule the world) or Ronan (who's basically just a racist asshole). The catharsis you get from seeing the heroes beat the shit out of that guy is a nice contrast to the more complex flavor of a villain you can understand and even sort of root for.

It also doesn't help when a writer does the job of making "sympathetic villain" poorly. If a film/show/etc is desperately trying to make you relate to the main villain and trying to push a "not so different" sort of theme, but they've written them as an unlikable shit who wants to do utterly unjustifiable things, it creates a sense of cognitive dissonance where the audience feels frustrated because they hate this villain, but the story is clearly treating them like a tragic figure who the hero is going to forgive or sympathize with.

Straughan posted...
Hey! And that thing kids used to say when we were kids about blood being blue before it came out of us. No wonder!! They were making that shit up because they saw blue veins!!

It's also where the phrase "blue bloods" comes from.

Rich people didn't need to work outside. Poor people did. So for most of human history tan skin became associated with work and pale skin was a mark or wealth/nobility. And veins show up much better on pale skin than they do on tan skin, so the phrase generally became associated with the idea that the rich had "blue blood" (not literally).

It's really only over the last hundred years or so that things kind of flipped around. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution and Tech Revolution making it more common for people to work inside (and thus becoming pale, pasty weirdos), we sort of flopped around on the idea that pale now means "bad" and tan means "good". Which is why we have artificial tanning.

There was a similar shift in weight. Standards of beauty used to value women who were fatter (because it meant they didn't need to work, and were more likely to carry a baby to term successfully), while skinny (or worse, muscular) women were clearly laborers (and thus poor and probably malnourished). But then the greater abundance of food over the last hundred or so years shifted things so now we tend to associate fat with laziness and unhealthy diet, and skinniness with someone who takes the time and effort to take care of themselves.

Humans are funny.

Not even close, IMO. I know it's at least somewhat a question of what you're actually looking for in a game plus nostalgia/experience and a bunch of other factors, but I can't even conceive of a scenario where I would ever rate any aspect of LoD better than FFVII. And I'm not even as big an FFVII fanboy as a lot of people are. LoD just felt generic and lame to me.

I'd be willing to concede that it's better than FFVIII, but that's only because my opinion of FFVIII is that it's utter irredeemable garbage. So watching paint dry or getting a root canal is better than FFVIII.

I never finished it. I rented it from my local library, and I hated the timed hits aspect of it, so once my rental period was up I never bothered renting it again to finish it.

I forget how far into the story I actually was... the only parts I can remember is fighting Lloyd and the Green Dragoon dying and getting replaced by the king, but I can't remember how much farther past those parts I got before I stopped.

I feel like it probably didn't help that everyone kept praising it as being so awesome and a "Final Fantasy killer", when I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as Final Fantasy... and the real Final Fantasy killer for me at that point was Suikoden (which was shamefully overlooked in spite of being fantastic).

I straight up refuse to use Uber Eats, Grubhub, DoorDash, or similar services -so that's not applicable to me at all.

I mainly only get delivery from my local pizza and Chinese places because they have in-house delivery drivers. Sure, you still tip the driver, but that's not really a ridiculous add-on when I'm essentially paying for the time/fuel I would have used going to pick it up myself.

The initial buyout and firing was a way to buy stories that cracked controlled and prevent staff from continuing to write in certain topics.

This isn't even remotely true, and borders on conspiracy theory BS.

Cracked was bought because it was becoming one of the most popular humor sites on the web, and corporations love buying growing websites and services (in exactly the same way GameFAQs got bought by C|Net and CBS when it was one of the highest-traffic game sites on the web). Unfortunately, corporations also tend to be utterly shit at monetizing and maintaining the success of those websites (in exactly the same way C|Net and CBS kind of ruined GameFAQs and then sold it off once it was damaged goods).

If anything, it sounds like something Cody would say, because Cody's gone full left-wing flake since then (or David Wong/Jason Pargin, but he was always kind of an asshole from day one). But most of the other main personalities and writers have always been pretty open about the fact that it was a money-motivated deal (even ones like Michael Swaim who've always been pretty far Left themselves in terms of outlook and content).

Why is Level 39 still called ???, then? Or are they waiting for more people to reach 10000 first?

Almost every new level was ??? at some point. They generally wait until a bunch of people get to that level, make a social board for them that only they can access (like Iconia, Temple of the Ancients, and The Mushroom Kingdom), then have a poll there where they can vote on what they think the level should be called.

It's the main reason why Level 38 became "? Block" - since they were all ??? already and it was just after the character contest fiasco, they decided it would be funny to just go with ? Block.

Sadly, it's always going to be more or less the same people who get to make those choices, because they're so far out ahead of everyone else and there's no real way for anyone else to ever catch up. Sure, some of them eventually drop off and leave the site from time-to-time, but the top of the list has always been pretty regularly the same bunch of accounts.

And level 39 is kind of ridiculous anyway. I mean, I've been here for almost 20 years, and I'd still need to log in every day for the next 10 years (and more) to get to it. So it's probably never going to happen for most people (especially with them not really doing karma boosts anymore).

Which is a shame. Because I kind of wish the site could get to the point of having a Level 42. Because I would campaign SO HARD to get people to vote for that level to be called Something About You, and their social board to be called World Machine.

I know there are others at 9k+ besides those listed here because I've run across them in random topics around the site, but they weren't on the old hku list and I didn't tag them for anything, so they're not included.

I put CVagts on the bottom, despite him only having 8200 karma, because for a few years he was the top karma user. I didn't feel it was necessary to list all the others who dropped below 9k as well, so sorry if you were hoping for that.

I honestly only see them when I watch wrestling, so I don't really care.

If I actually watched more sports, or it started creeping into other genres more blatantly, I might start finding it annoying.

Fears of another Cracked situation (they got bought out by a conservative entity that fired everyone and switched to a user based model that never took off

That had nothing to do with a "conservative" entity and everything to do with a corporation wanting to save money.

The mindset was "Why are we paying all of you when we can outsource content from the audience for free?" (see also, the GameFAQs model) combined with "The future of Internet comedy is clearly in video production" (see also the CollegeHumor model crossed with the WhatCulture model). Their assumption was that they'd make even more money and have to spend less to make it.

It just didn't work out the way they expected.

are you doing multiplayer or modding? cuz I 100%'d the base game (this was before the multiplayer patch even existed) in only 70 hours

On the current version?

With the tropical island added, I usually take around 160-180 hours per run before I start getting bored and stop playing. Sometimes I mange to finish grinding the 10mil for the golden clock, sometimes not. And while I'm definitely not a speedrunner, I do start quick (maximize profit in spring, buy strawberries, get the greenhouse/ancient fruit/keg/cask combo running as soon as possible), so I'm not just taking my time doing more relaxed runs like a lot of people do.

I usually wind up completing the Community Center somewhere around Fall of Year 2 (though with the mixed bundles option I've gotten it as early as Winter Year 1, and going the Joja route I've gotten it in Fall Year 1). Then the island/volcano completes relatively quickly (about a season or so), and I mostly start grinding out ancient fruit for money to buy the larger stuff (return wand, golden clock) finishing off the Qi challenges to buy his stuff, and completing whatever collections I haven't finished yet (shipping, fishing, museum stuff, cooking, etc). I don't go out of my way to maximally optimize profit in later stages, as I kind of like my farm to look nice rather than having everything crammed together with just enough room to walk (I maybe grow 200 ancient fruit a week and keg them), so I generally make it to at least Year 4 before I stop, and my general stopping point is usually somewhere around Year 6. Though I've made it as far as Year 8 before.

And yeah, that's without mods. With mods (and there are a metric shitton of them) I could easily see a run taking way longer to finish.

I've basically done multiple runs on every farm type (though I prefer Four Corners now), played co-op a couple times, and usually go back to it every couple games or so. It's just a chill time-waster, and I usually play it with the sound off while listening to podcasts, so I usually don't even realize how long I've been playing it for until I'm looking at the character menu and I see all my characters showing something like 180 hours or the occasional 200 hours (and those are just the ones I haven't deleted - I've deleted a lot of runs to tidy up the menu).

Sort of the same way I play Minecraft. I usually create a new world and start playing, work on a project, dump like 100+ hours into it, then eventually get bored, drift off, go play a couple other games in the meantime, and then eventually get in the mood again and start up a new world and a new project. Then eventually I've got like 20 worlds in my menu that I'm never going to open up again and just start deleting them.

My biggest Minecraft project was one where I covered the entire world (on the 360, so a 864x864 map) with a single layer of cobblestone block in the sky to block out the sun. It took about three quarters of a million blocks, and I did it in Survival Mode (so no cheating it all in, I had to make it/mine it). And then I filled in the sides with "walls" (which pretty much doubled the amount of cobble I used). On top of which I built a huge treetop elf village, a massive underground dwarf fortress, an underground lab, a large ranch farm, and a "sky castle". So that world took a looooong time.

I'd point out that the Wiki article says "soccer" was a term used by the upper class, whereas the working and middle classes preferred the term "football".

The article also says it was more or less "interchangeable" until it started declining in popularity. In the 1960s. And mainly just because you hate your own upper class.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVYA3oTG8fg

So in your parent's lifetime, there was absolutely a point in time when no one in Britain would have found calling it soccer all that weird or offensive or wrong at all. The ridiculous backlash against the idea isn't something that's always existed, but is something that had to slowly come into being over time. And relatively recently (at least compared to how long the sport itself has existed).

Vampire_Chicken posted...
All I'm saying is: while Americans should continue to feel free to do so, they might be interested to know that most Brits no longer call it that and we haven't done for maybe half a century. Just a tip, in the interests of furthering cultural awareness. OK?

Then in the interests of cultural awareness, most Brits should probably stop acting like the term is something that Americans randomly came up with just to troll them, or because Americans are too stupid to understand how sports work. If you can't be bothered to know the history of your own sport, why should we care about your opinions?

Most of us are fully aware that everyone else calls soccer "football" (at least those of us who care that soccer even exists in the first place). Most of us also don't really give a shit (about the sport or what anyone else calls it).

And beyond everything else, the original point still stands - you still named it that in the first place.

Sufferedphoneix posted...
If I'm not mistaken does it not have more similarities to rugby then soccer? And even then still pretty different

And rugby's actual technical name is "Rugby Football" (in the same way that soccer is "Association Football". So guess how American football got the name in the first place.

I'm willing to say I've broken 10k hours on Stardew Valley easy.

Probably come close to doing that for Minecraft as well.

Just doing the math in my head, I might have put in 10k hours into the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, but but that's also from doing more than a dozen runs each. Probably the same for New Vegas, for the same reason.

I might have 10k+ in Skyrim as well, if you count different ports (and maybe even if you don't), but again, that's across like a dozen different runs.

I feel like unless you plan on doing multiple playthroughs or just mindless grind an MMO you're going to have a really hard time finding any game that you can play for 10k hours straight and not be completely bored insane out of your mind.

There's one near me, but I almost never go. I've never been a fan of buffet-style restaurants in general in the first place, and I have a pretty limited palette for Chinese food I like, so it's not really worth it to me. And the one near me doesn't necessarily have the best food anyway.

When I want Chinese I just go to one of my local places (I've probably got like a dozen nearby) and order takeout.

Wow, I totally forgot about the English version existing, because I just didn't like it...
Lead singer does a good job, but the background singers sound utterly lifeless.
I also prefer the original lyrics more.

Part of why I prefer it is because the way it's sung in English tends to sound a bit more like what it's based on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arxD3Ro9mAk

Plus, I just don't find the Japanese voice to be all that strong, which is sort of a drawback for that type of song.
