Michael_Booth 04/25/24 4:01:38 PM #17 | FL81 posted... interesting that Vichy France has higher lactose intolerance than the rest of Europe I'm unsure why that is... But if you really want interesting, you want Mongolia is 95% lactose intolerant, and yet their main diet relies on dairy: https://www.popsci.com/story/science/lactose-intolerance-microbiome/ Also, kinda sad that despite being more cosmopolitan, we as a species are eating food that is becoming more and more similar over time, and that 500 years ago, going to another town would have had you eating food that micorbially was significantly more different than eating in New York, then Tokyo today. |
Topic | Mesoamerican societies didn't have cheese. |
Michael_Booth 04/25/24 3:08:22 PM #13 | They probably couldn't have eaten it, anyway. They had no diary products, so were even more lactose intolerant than they are today (unfortunately only got some of Mesoamerica, but it's still pretty high): https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/8/89db1eee.jpg |
Topic | Which of these fantasy worlds would you rather live in?i |
Michael_Booth 04/25/24 2:52:58 PM #12 | There's an additional problem with some if not all of these worlds, are we to go them as normal humans? Some of them would be fine, like Westeros (even though the world itself is craptastic... although the feats they have with swordsmanship mean some of their characters are bermensch), but some of the D&D worlds you'd be killed pretty quickly as a squishy normal human. |

Topic | Why do several people here act as though they have no flaws? |
Michael_Booth 04/25/24 11:57:50 AM #11 | It's because to admit to the flaws, would make them merely "good" rather than perfect, and in their socio-political sphere, good is the enemy of perfect. |
Topic | I can't wrap my head around people who can't swim. |
Michael_Booth 04/25/24 11:23:59 AM #22 | specialkid8 posted... Apparently it's not a natural instinct. Humans are not designed for swimming and have never had a major interest in it until very recently. The majority of the world can't actually swim. It's just so ubiquitous in the first world that we don't think about a lot of people not having access to places where they could even learn. Okay, a question: How long is "very recently"? Because the The Bajau people, often referred to as Sea Nomads, have lived an entirely marine-dependent existence, traveling the Southeast Asian seas on houseboats for over 1,000 years. Also, the Bajau have genetic differences leading to diving-related phenotypes, specifically an enlarged spleen caused by a mutation on the PDE10A gene. |

Michael_Booth 04/25/24 7:36:55 AM #54 | My strangest hobby is probably collecting toilet paper, it all started during Covid, but I'm up to almost one room full, just in-case. I never want to go without Toilet Paper, again. |

Michael_Booth 03/23/24 7:38:11 PM #242 | There needs to be safeguards, a list perhaps of the dangerous individuals who can destroy the planet in 10 seconds after having a bad day. Not all mutants -- I don't care about "Kat Fluffins the 3rd" who can turn into a giant fucking bunny rabbit, and loves raw carrots. Let them do Children's parties for all I care. I do care about the one who can destroy a country in 5 seconds, I want a damn list... Or do you believe that humans should be able to buy Nuclear warheads totally anonymously? Because some mutants can make Nukes look like firecrackers. |

Topic | Trump says ''What da hell do you have to lose?'' |
Michael_Booth 03/19/24 12:16:21 AM #39 | Isn't this basically a re-treat of Putin's campaign which was "<< , ?>>", "If not Putin, then who?" -- which has been Putin's campaign motto since at least 2015.... Which was pretty successful, but that might be because as the US says the Russia vote is neither free nor fair. (Although to me, any country with a two-party system shouldn't really comment about the "Freeness" of other countries elections...) |

Topic | My son just got back from school, and I found out they taught him Arabic numbers |
Michael_Booth 03/02/24 10:15:27 AM #5 | I'm afraid your joke doesn't really work, as Western numerals are actually called "Hindu-Arabic numerals", as the symbols were actually invented by Indian mathematicians (and the country at the time was called Hindustan by other regions) in the 3rd-4th century, they were only later "adopted" by Arabic mathematicians in the 9th century. They differentiate from Eastern Arabic numerals, which are commonly used today in the Middle East: , , , , , , , , |
Topic | The economy is great, actually! |
Michael_Booth 03/01/24 10:52:35 PM #18 | My father could support a family of four comfortably, on his unskilled labor job, with two vacations a year. If the economy is so great, why can't I? Neither party seems to want a return to those times. |
