It took years but finally a Souls game cracks thru and takes the top spot. If you removed all record breaking 18 first place votes this game got fully it still beats Kirby by a single point.

There were only two indie games that really were constantly discussed in 2022 and this is one of them. Vampire Survivors is a bullet hell rogue like that costs a mere few dollars and will constantly have you telling yourself "ok just one more run". As you get more and more upgrades, more and more baddies flood the screen. Chaos is the name of this game, also achievements. Man there is a lot to achieve here.

#4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Cowabunga! The Turtles see Streets of Rages top 10 performance from a few years ago and do even better. But like SoR4, Turtles gets here with ZERO #1 votes! Much like Stray, Turtles ends up remaining a topic of discussion well after the initial burst of players. The actual game feels like a seamless followup to TMNT 4 Turtle in Time without making sacrifices. An easy way to see how well this game did is just look at the stumble the new Battletoads was a few years ago.

Chasing gym leaders, titan pokemon, or taking down the evil team...this time you choose the order and how you want to approach it. The world is yours and there are mysteries to solve. The game has taken a ton of heat from the internet but like other games on this list the content has driven gamers to stay with it.

Stray's advantage is appearing on a ton of lists because so many people played it, even if it didn't rank super high on many. Ragnarok placing so low is pretty surprising though, especially with how well it's been selling and how good the reception's been for the most part.

An experiment in a new direction, Game Freak gave us an open world and instead of just having us in a small area where we touch pokemon to fight out. Suddenly we had options how to approach and carry out the mission of catch em all. Pokemon act like real creatures here, some are there to pose cute, others run away, and others want you to just freaking die. The game suffers from some bland graphics and frame rate issues but these seem to be largely forgiven for the content it provides.

When Tunic was first shown off I immediately pointed to my screen like Leonardo Dicaprio in that meme and yelled "I see original language is this a fez in disguise?!". What is Tunic? It's a love letter to the days of old gaming without smashing your face in faux 8 bit graphics. The game starts you off with nothing and says go, explore the world, learn about the world and begin your journey. Actually it doesn't even say that. How you learn to play Tunic is all related to piecing together an old NES style manual thats only partly translated and has personalized notes to assist you. From there its a dive into the unknown and Dark Souls combat as you try to find out what's next.

You are cat. Meow. In a realm of simulators, one studio took that concept and wrapped a sci fi story and world around it. They could have easily just made the game about sleeping in odd positions or climbing on some counters but instead wrapped a stealthy science fiction and a world of mystery after luring you in. The fact many people came out of this game liking it beyond the gimmick speaks for its quality.

Sometimes it makes sense and other times the internet misses the mark and backs games before release that are huge flops. Sonic Frontiers is a different feeling game but what Sega does is they delivered a really fun experience. Is it the best of the year? No that's why it fell around here for ranking but it delivers a start to finish experience that makes you want to keep coming back for more. Which is a feeling Sonic has struggled to capture consistently since entering the 3d landscape. Even choices like a super simplistic fishing game work out as a breather between the speeding around.

With the addition of Friend Vs Friend coming soon its only bound to grow even more.

Mastering this is the key to its flow and function.

People leave the game every year but some of these retirements really can rock a team for years. The Colts may never recover from Andrew Luck retiring at this rate for instance.

HB Frank Gore: Officially the Gore really retired a few years ago with one of those I could still come back but alas the Gore finally stopped running

TE Rob Gronkowski: I'm going to be honest i really thought Gronk would have come out of retirement randomly this season. His second retirement seems to be sticking though despite how 'bored' the Gronk is at home. He was on FOXs program for a bit but honestly haven't kept up if hes still on it. They were trying out him, Vick, and Sanchez at one point this year.

HB Todd Gurley: I still remember all the hype around Todd Gurley, we even had Gurley action figures at Gamestop. But he sputtered out fast with the Rams, did a 1 year stint with Atlanta then just faded away.

SS Malcolm Jenkins: Jenkins served on both the NO and PHI Superbowl teams and had a good career for both teams. Earlier this season Jenkins expressed interest in helping the Eagles when their safeties went down but hes under the Saints contract still and doesn't seem like he really wanted to help them out.

LB Clay Matthews III: Clay randomly declared his retirement after two years of uh being out of the league. He has come to regret his 1 year Ram stint and I imagine many one team players that do a fill in year elsewhere likely feel that

QB Ben Roethlisberger: Its hard to believe after losing to Green Bay the Steelers just spent a literal decade getting round 1 or 2 bounced from the playoffs. Whats even stranger is multiple times Ben looked cooked then came back looking better versus say an Eli Manning that once he fell off was just done.

Reffing

Every year we hear this narrative week 1 or 2 about what the refs are cracking down on. Some years we are lucky and its helmet to helmet or a horse caller tackle. Other years they make us question what is a catch, and how soft you must sack a QB...but this year was a bunch of false start penalties that really slowed the game to a crawl in early weeks.

Overall many games still felt like it was a battle between Team A, Team B, and Team Zebra. It really was a coin flip if the ref on that particular play was patient enough to let a play fully play out during a fumble. The Eagles Commanders matchup was particularly questionable when the ref just let Dallas Goedert get his facemask yanked as he was also being poked in the eye.

I'll spare us from the Roughing the Passer calls this year, no they weren't better but I've long given up hope this will ever get fixed as it gets worse every year.

Rules

In the postseason only, both teams are assured of one possession in overtime, even if the first team with possession scores a touchdown. This change was made in response to several recent playoff games in which the first team to possess the ball in overtime scored a touchdown and the other team did not have a chance to respond.

Yea this one had to happen. As we enter the playoffs I don't think nfl fans would tolerate a repeat of last year. A quick but necessary fix

Made permanent a 2021 experimental rule change to limit the receiving team on kickoffs to no more than nine players in the "set-up zone" (the area between 10 and 25 yards from the kickoff spot).

Return TDs are down, we only had 6 this year and two were literally in the final week of the year. But injuries on returns are seemingly down. This is not a stat anyone can chase down but we went from hearing about the constant injury weariness of returns to well not hearing about them at all.
