He has a terrible injury that cant be fixed. His spinal canal is narrowing in his neck. Its putting pressure on the nerves. Severe neck pain as well as pain anywhere below that level. A coach of mine had nerve related buttock and chest pain from the same injury, for example. In his extended absence, he got treatment to calm it down. Now that hes relatively healthy, all he needs is some chicken and broccoli and cardio and hell look amazing again. Thats the least of his worries as he thought he was going to have to retire just last year.

I keep saying it and hopefully itll stick. Things what made edges muscles disappear and forced him to retire for 9 years. This was the kiss of death for Austin. Same deal with Angles atrophy all over the body especially noticeable in his arms. Its serious stuff

The fact that were still arguing about it 30 years later proves that the writers did a good job coming up with a moral dilemma that had no right answer.

Not to mention that usually when Star Trek has a dilemma like this, the last part of the episode introduces some deus ex machine that lets them have their cake and eat it too. I actually like that this time they had the captain actually have to make the tough choice and stick with it.
