Honestly the biggest thing that will effect whether or not kids play classic games is the popularity of PC gaming.

If PC gaming is huge in 20 years time then pretty much every game ever (within reason) will be avaiable to play.

If in 20 years time we still have the Playstation Ultra X-O and The Nintendo Podbucket. Then they're going to be heavily promoting the new games and "rereleases"

Just why?

I don't have an answer. It's more puzzling since Leng was supposed to be equal to Shepherd in terms of ability but came off as pathetic. He was a cutscene hero and they made other characters look stupid just to try and build him up which is a rookie mistake. For example, Thane got the drop on him and his character dictates he would have taken the head shot instantly but since they had to build up Leng they made him hesitate. It was pretty insulting.

He's actually from the books.

In the 3rd book he was okay and in the 4th (legendarily awful) book he was terrible but everyone in that book was. That's why he had a fan following and why they put him in 3 as a big deal.

Which makes it even more jarring that they screwed him up so much

There was a complete tonal disconnect. It was presented as the emotional equivalent of wearing a condom -- in your mind you knew what was going on because it was presented straight in front of you, but it didn't make you feel anything because of how blunt and flatly it was presented.

If you say so. As a fan of all 3 games I didn't feel this and in fact would say 2 did the worst job of getting the gameplay to represent story.

I'd see your point that the more open world nature of the game hurt NPC interaction but the point of "It's less dark because it felt less dark even though it was just as dark!" just sounds more to me like you got older.

The characters were almost all very flat and same, like they were written by one person with only a superficial knowledge of other types of people than himself. The only ones who broke the mold were Sera and Cole.

The game as a whole was not dark fantasy in the slightest. It was standard fantasy, which includes sprinkles of everything naturally. There was nothing the likes of the Grey Warden blood ritual in the first game, where you see the recruit in front of you drink Darkspawn blood and go crazy and die, and then it's your turn. Or a dwarf female being kidnapped by Darkspawn, dragged into their lair and turned into a broodmother. Or stuff like the Tranquil from the Mages' Circle. Those kinds of themes that cast an air of harsh times instead of just telling you "hey times are harsh".

Instead it had refugees with the plague being mass murdered in a flood intentionally to save a town from death.
Someone selling their own townspeople into intentional torture-based slavery and transformation into monsters just so the town could survive a little longer.
A man literally destroying the entire world and murdering everybody to keep his dying son alive in a cataonic state.
The Grey Wardens all hearing the call into believing they are about to turn into horrible monsters at any moment and so kill their own friends to raise an army of demons to hold back the darkness
And let's not forget killing one of your enemies, putting them in a box and then sending the box around as a warning for any who would challenge you.

I'd say all 3 games are standard fantasy, there's nothing that dark in any of them. But Inky is no less dark than 1 or 2.

It had fantastic characters. And no darkness? Did you even play the game? You clearly didn't, as several characters whole theme was wrapped around darkness as were several main quests.

It's weird as well because Origins and 2 weren't that dark either.

Both games (especially 2) were about the power of friendship overcoming evil dark forces.

I mean 3 even had a dude defend slavery, that's darker than anything a companion did in Origins.

They shuttered the studio, canceled the DLC and sequel after Andromeda. I have no idea how you can make the claim that ME3 was worse for the franchise.

Because it was 3 that left the bad taste in people's mouths. So much so they had to soft-reboot the entire series. On top of that Andromeda was a financial success.

The reasons for the studio and DLC cancelcation were internal ones. It wasn't shut down because Andromeda wasn't making bank. The development of Andromeda was hell which shows in the finished product.

I mean Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith is considered the best of the prequels and yet the star wars plans were canceled following it and there wasn't another entry for a decade becasue Episode 1 had already done the damage.

If disenfranchised fans with a bad taste in their mouths can still make a soft-reboot profitable then just imagine what would have happened if ME3's ending wasn't a debacle and there was tremendous interest in Andromeda.

My take anyway

To be fair to Bioware, Mass Effect 3's ending did more damage to the franchise than Andromeda ever did.
