Feels weird not to have a JRPG on here, but I feel like all of these are more deserving. DQV would be on here if it released in the west though.

Oh yeah, I glossed over what happened there. Basically I was switching Gyarados in and out to stack intimidates and figured Cody could take a hit and also get some EXP to make sure I didn't get overleveled. Of course, it was a crit and a OHKO.

I took down Maylene without much trouble, although we did lose Cody in the process :/ with 4 badges, the level cap is now 50 and shouldn't really be a factor for the rest of the run.

I also took down Chuck in Heart Gold. Dedede the Alakazam rolled through the entire gym, all the way to getting his Poliwrath to pixel life before getting OHKO'd by a critical Body Slam. Chuck got literally one attack off and it was a crit. I hate everything. How is my luck so bad.

On the way to Cianwood I caught a Tentacruel, which should be helpful cause it's pretty bulky. I named it 5nake because Snake5555555 had the top topic on the board when I caught it. I also got the Shuckle, which is apparently named Nessie.

Gen VIII - Sobble is great but I don't like Inteleon. Cramorant is funny but the fossils really drag it down and I don't really like any of the other Pokemon.

Gen VII - Awful starter and a bunch of blah. Golisopod is the only Pokemon here I like at all.

Gen IV - Piplup is great but Empoleon is kinda disappointing. Floatzel and Gastrodon lines are solid enough to put it above the bottom two.

Gen VI - I'm a big fan of Froakie and all its evolutions, but I don't care for the megas, Clawitzer is only okay, and everything else is no good.

Gen V - Samurott line, Jellicent, and Swanna are great, the fossil turtles are good, and everything else ranges from bad (monkeys) to neutral (toads).

Gen II - Very strong lineup with Totodile (my favorite first form starter), Lanturn, Politoed, and Slowking. I wouldn't call any of these bad, either.

Gen IX - Could be higher with a better starter; actually, I like Quaxly a lot but Quaquaval is terrible. Palafin, Veluza, Dondozo, Wiglett line, and Iron Bundle are all fantastic.

Gen I - There's a lot of good here: Squirtle, Poliwhirl, Slowbro, Seadra, Starmie, Cloyster, Lapras, Vaporeon, Gyarados, and Kabutops are all good to great. There's also a lot of bloat, though. Dewgong, Seaking, Kingler, and Tentacruel I could live without. Still, the sheer volume of good Pokemon make it hard to leave Gen 1 out of the top two

Gen III - Spheal and Sharpedo are my top two water types, so I was always leaning Gen III, but Ludicolo, Corphish, Wailmer, and Whiscash are all amazing as well. I wouldn't be surprised if over half of my top 10 Water types came from this generation. I also like Pelipper a lot, even if it can be really annoying to fight, and Kyogre is one of the better legendaries. The starter isn't great (Mudkip is good though) and the Clamperl evolutions suck but not enough to drop this from the top spot imo

Gen VII - Alolan Sandlash is cool and Kartana is one of the few good Ultra Beasts, but overall a very weak lineup.

Gen IV - Lucario, Magnezone, and a bunch of bad.

Gen I - Two solid Pokemon, but a very limited roster and Magnezone is better. Only putting it above IV because IV has so many bad Pokemon.

Gen VI - Aegislash is awesome and Mega Lucario is pretty cool, but I don't care for Klefki or the other Megas.

Gen II - A small group here but all of them are a least decent, with Scizor and Skarmory being better than decent.

Gen III - Also a small group, but Aggron and Megaross rule, and even Jirachi is pretty good.

Gen IX - Tinkaton, Orthworm, and Kingambit are great, and I like Gholdengo too. A really good lineup overall but the gens above it are stacked.

Gen VIII - Corviknight and Perrserker are fantastic and the elephants are really good. The legendaries are pretty solid too. The only dud is Stunfisk

Gen V - Bisharp is my favorite Steel type, so this gen gets an automatic boost from that, but Excadrill and Escavalier are top tier Steel types too. Genesect has a sweet design and I would like it a lot if it wasn't a Mythical. The seeds and gears are pretty funny and decent in their own right. Cobalion I don't really have any strong feelings about.

Also, while we're on the subject I need to make a complaint about Escavalier. Let's look at it's Pokedex entry for Pokemon Black:

They fly around at high speed, striking with their pointed spears. Even when in trouble, they face opponents bravely.

Speed: 20

wtf

Not only is Ampharos a strong mon for our Platinum squad, but I finally get to use a name I've been holding onto for awhile. Say hello to Sheep the Impish Flaaffy. The Dragon Quest 3 discussion feels like when people try to give some random artist from the 60s credit for creating rock forgetting that a lot of pieces were in place around that given artist.

I'm not saying it had no importance at all but I'm skeptical it was super important for console rpgs to exist. Normally I'd just say "well must be a Japan thing" but we got people comparing it to FF7 or SMB3 in this topic and I know that isn't right.

DQ3 was a cultural phenomenon in Japan. It made DQ mainstream instead of being something only gamers really knew about. Huge lines outside stores on the release date, so many people skipping work and school it became a problem, Enix stopped releasing games on weekdays because so many kids skipped school to buy it, etc. It broke all kinds of sales records when it came out. It's impact isn't even limited to JRPGS, hell it's not even limited to video games. It had a massive impact on Japanese media and pop culture as a whole. It still regularly places first in Dragon Quest series fan rankings. The DQ3 hero is in Smash, not the DQ1 guy. Tons of anime and other media reference DQ3. It's the best selling game in the series if you include the remakes.

Not that I blame anyone outside of Japan for not knowing how big of a deal it was, but even gameplay wise I think it's pretty clearly more influential on the future of the genre than DQ1 was.

If we factor in sales then it should be noted that Dragon Quest 1 sold 3 million on NES, which is not that far from 3s so its not like a FFVII situation where one game towers over the others. More importantly, Dragon Quest 1 sold MUCH better than 3 in North America at a stonking 1.5 million copies, of which a million were part of a subscription deal with Nintendo Power which is itself pretty notable. Even excluding that though it still outsold 3 in North America roughly five to one. The popularity of 3 was driven purely by Japan, while 1 was more of a global hit.

Well DQ3 came out in the west after the SNES was already out so it was kind of a tough sell

In Heart Gold I caught a Koffing in the Burned Tower and named it Cody. I also caught a Raticate on Route 39, which I named Kirby Jr. In Platinum I caught a Machop on Route 206 and named him Shattered. Mr. Coronet was a Geodude, which I don't need so I didn't catch it. Route 208 was a Budew, which I caught and named Rose (yes I'm very creative thanks for noticing).

Ana finally evolved into Gyarados and learned Bite, which made Fantina a bit of a cakewalk. Ana kept getting put to sleep, confused, and even burned at one point, which made it annoying but it was definitely the easiest badge so far. With three badges in hand, I can buy Great Balls at the Mart so I decided to hit the Wayward Cave and hope for a Gible. Unfortunately, it was a Zubat. Oh well.
