For people who don't want to have to sift through books and books of rules for stupid shit or deal with finicky DMs, the game streamlines the dungoneering process and removes most of the roleplaying aspects so that it's more of a straight up board game. I wouldn't call it a dumbed down D&D. I would say Descent is much more like a dumbed down D&D. Gloomhaven is D&D thematically, that's for sure, but it plays more like a hybrid of Euro games and thematic games. The combat is more like a puzzle. You don't throw dice and do stat checks. You manage your card hand and figure out the best plays to make. I will say the miniatures and monsters that come with Gloomhaven are excellent for DnD :D --- The Legend is True!

This is a pretty unique feature that not many board games have. They're generally referred to as "Legacy" games which are games meant to be played over many, many sessions. Since the cards have no use beyond their initial one, some people like to destroy and throw them away. --- The Legend is True!
