https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jan/23/crocodile-dundee-was-sexist-racist-and-homophobic-lets-not-bring-that-back

Hogan told People Magazine: Im excited to introduce the new Crocodile Dundee to the world, and he described the film as one that has stood the test of time.

So if we assume the unthinkable: that this project is actually going ahead (though Screen Australia has not confirmed it), what would Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home need to do to capture the spirit of the original three Crocodile Dundee movies, released in 1986, 1988 and 2001?

...

Take, for example, a scene from the original film, based in a pub in New York. Mick Dundee (Hogan) chats up a trans woman, before a friend pulls him aside: Ive been trying to tell you all night, that girl, shes a guy! Dundee responds by sexual assaulting her. He grabs the woman in the groin area, then points and yells: A guy dressed up like a sheila! Look at that!

The pub erupts into laughter and applause. There are high fives and back slaps.

Dundee sexually assaults another women later on, in the same way, at an art gallery. His love interest Sue (Linda Kozlowski) consoles the distraught woman by saying: Its OK, hes Australian.

...

Sue, a journalist, initially appears to have a reasonable amount of agency, before we learn she is dating her editor and her father is the publisher. During a quiet scene in the original movie (directed by Peter Faiman and written by Hogan, Ken Shadie and John Cornell), Sue complains to Dundee about a previous lover. She says this guy is a lefty type, probably marching right now, for the gay Nazis or something.

Dundee, disgusted, tells her he sounds like a prize ratbag. He then discusses land rights and Indigenous Australians. They dont own the land, they belong to it, he says, going on to compare people discussing land ownership to fleas debating who owns the dog.

The 80s were a different time. Arguably a better time when comedy movies could make a lighthearted joke in a lighthearted movie without writers at the Guardian feeling the need to weigh in on the social implications 30 years later.

Nothing in that article is wrong. It was a movie from 3 decades ago that was just a bunch of dumb Australian stereotypes. Nobody considers this movie a classic or takes it seriously.

Which is why this remake isn't even real and is just a joke.

That's an idiotic hot take for two reasons:

1) Crocodile Dundee wasn't homophobic, as it was expressing what was essentially the mainstream opinion back in the 1980s and 1990s. That was a time when "gay" was an insult used by everybody and transgendered people were the butt of jokes or shocking plot twists. If you want to make the case that the 80's and 90's were more trans/homophobic than the current day, you absolutely can make that argument and even point to individual scenes in movies as proof of that. But to take a piece of comedy from that time period and to use our current standards to judge it out of all societal context is just a waste of space.

2) And if you are well-intentioned, you should point to movies like Crocodile Dundee and Ace Ventura as proof for how far we've come as a society in just a few decades. Back when those movies were released, transgendered people could be used as a punchline just because without anyone batting an eye. Nowadays, mocking someone solely for being transgendered would essentially get you booed to oblivion outside of the deep south and a GOP convention.

I just feel like this guy is taking cheapshots here, is all. Pointing out that a lowbrow comedy movie from the 80s is off the mark on sex politics by today's stanrdards is such a redundant criticism to make I have to wonder what the author actually intended, if not just to feel a bit smug for having the correct opinion about something.

The joke is that Dundee (the fish out of water) checks her crotch because his nature is to be direct in an over-the-top way, he doesn't understand it's improper or anything. And he's never seen a transwoman in person or really heard about them. You could argue he's not homophobic since he's not scared to cup male genitalia just to check if it's there or not. He doesn't give a shit because he's an alpha.

For the most part he's a noble, honest, and principled guy (yet imperfect) who suddenly finds himself in a strange land where people are either two-faced, conceal their true nature, and things are not what they seem.

Man, those were the days, back when it was okay to make movies that positively portrayed masculinity.
