yup, totally underestimated how different japanese language is structurally compared to english or even indonesian.

i thought i would be able to stitch up the meaning of the sentence as long as i knew the meaning of individual words, but using translate, there is alot of hurdles and even when i know individual words the meaning is lost on me lol.

back to basic lessons i guess.

True, yeah, i think i will go for it. The worst thing that can happen is i will just set it aside. Plus the harshest challenge usually make the best teacher. Plus with the help of digital translator nowadays, you can get at least a pretty good grip.

I will focus more on grammar first, i admit i have been slacking off learning past 2 weeks.

Now i have actual, immediate motivation to go again

Thanks

So i played great ace attorney, it ended in a cliffhanger.

Say, if i just jump right into Dai gyakuten 2, will i get fucked? I mean i assume an ace attorney game will give me trouble simce there will be alot of legal jargon, but at the same time, this is one game that motivate me beczuse i actually like the game

Easiest katakana learning houhou = Pokemon

Seriously, just play some freaking pokemon and you'll get there.

That won't help you with Kanji or anything if you play the kana-soup versions (please PLEASE just play Black/Whiteand beyond) but you won't get more consistent repetitive exposure than by seeing poke names.

True enough. Pokemon games dont really stimulate me anymore, but i plan to anyway

"Monster" is spelled "monsuta" , i kinda expect it to be spelled "monsutaru" because the english word ends with a hard "r"

You have to keep in mind that japanese has a somewhat limited set of "valid" syllables so katakana loanwords will often just be a best attempt approximation. Consider how basically no one speaking english would ever say monsteru but depending on their accent they might get pretty close to monsta or monstah

reading katakana can be tricky but turning english words into katakana is basically the final boss of japanese

Damn sounds pretty menacing

Is there any particular rule when you use katakana to spell english word? Especially the use of "r" from what seen is always silent

For example, this Japanese MH trailer;

I am too lazy to switch kana keyboard so, i just use romaji

"Monster" is spelled "monsuta" , i kinda expect it to be spelled "monsutaru" because the english word ends with a hard "r"

So is hunter is spelled "hanta" not "hantaru"

i sometimes forget you read japanese from right to left. in manga's original RAW, you should read it from right then down, move on the the left column and so on. at first i read it from left to right column and was like "this doesn't make sense!?" then i remembered.

https://imgur.com/DyrLCwL

that's the one i encountered in reddit and tried to read and translate it myself lol.

Dang that write fuction on jisho website is a fucking godsend.

It help me practice (writing it on yoir own makes you memorize faster than just copy paste) and in case i read a word from something i cannot copy paste, (for example subtitle in anime or a sign in anime or games whateber) i would just write it down and find a match.

Next time i play a yakuza game, i am definitely doing it. The environment are full of japanese characters.

Moving on to adjectives. So basically the adjective can be attached to nouns directly. While those who doesn't end with have to be preceded by .

However there are also words that ends with but considered as a na adjectives.

I mean it is not exactly a complex rules, but to piece is together you have to experience alot of examples. Learning japanese, so far the biggest hurdles is there are alot of parts that you can try to learn individually, but they don't really form a full picture on their own.

It is like doing puzzles that have to be solved in part, separately. You can have alot of vocabulary, but without the sense of how japanese use context to convey meaning, you will just understand fragments of meaning. You can know the rules, the quirks and subtle rules and context, but without vocabulary you cant know the meaning of words.

I guess maybe because i am learning on myself without some educational curriculum which i assume would be more organized.

But whatever. It is like i said, a puzzle where you start from the corners. It doesnt make sense at first, but i guess, as you learn more both vocab and grammar, you will eventually meet a point where both pieces meet and alot of things will start making sense.

when kanji is introduced it definitely complicate things. at least some of the formal/informal greetings and rules already make sense to me. say if i am a tourist, i would just use the formal speeech to everyone just in case right?

is it common for the average japanese person to be offended if you use too casual language?

These grammar are fucking melting my mind, especially the context related stuff.

For example the kanji
So when describing nationality is read but when using adjective is read as

= i am japanese / watashi wa nihonjin desu

And

= you are pretty/beautiful / anata wa kirei na hito desu.

It is NOT that confusing so far, especially compared to some of the more advanced english. Both English and my native tongue (indonesian) is already pretty different, and japanese is also a different beast altogether, so when reading a japanese text, i process them both interchangeably either in english or indonesian. I am fluent enough in english to process it internaly (aka i dont have to translate an english texts or voices to indonesian) but learning a third languange while being bilingual is really fascinating. It is doing funny stuff to your head. On one side, you can try to translate the new languange into either of the languange you know, and which one fits well, i use that language to process the japanese text.

I guess i went trough this process when i was learning english, but i started at fairly young age so the experience kinda eluded me and at the time i only know indonesian so the exchange between both languange are linear instead of a triangle.

Oh yeah, other mindfuckery i have is basically the process of translating the text into romaji.

When you still can't process the non roman alphabet, you basically have to go extra steps.

Kanji > hira/kata > romaji > english/indonesian > meaning.

But yeah i really enjoy the mental exercise. Aside from work stuff (which only involve memorizing flow, item names, price, etc),and maybe learning a video game rules this is the most i have flexed my brain and it is fun.

I mostly read on mobile so the one page per topic is good. But thanks.

Anyway some little question, with the number 4, sometimes it says "shi" which the almost identical as the word s in chinese. But 4 is also "yon" in japanese. Is there a specific context to use either yon or shi, or i just use whatever i like?

Now i am back to health, it is time i start learning again.

Now that i got ahold of hiragana and katakana well, o guess i should delve truly into understanding the grammar.

Thsi guide posted earlier is useful so far
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/complete/stateofbeing

I already know some from deducting and reading duolingo comments in lessons, but this guide does so much better than just reading random comments hoping someone would explain how the grammar works or just guessing.

Also learned several other kanjis.

Mandarin grammar is like English, but a lot easier. Japanese grammar is brutal if you are a native speaker of either of the other two. It's funny. I live in Japan, speak Japanese at work, speak Japanese to my SO (a native Mandarin speaker), just constantly using it. I use English online and when writing papers. I use Mandarin almost never. And yet I still find Mandarin grammar easier to grasp overall.

From little i learned about mandarin in highschool extra class, the hardest thing about mandarin for me is the pronounciation. You have to watch the intonation sign and stuff. Mandarin grammar was easy then, i was just too lazy to bother when i was young
