So I've been periodically checking to see if/when A Silent Voice is coming out on Blu-Ray in America (seriously what's taking so long), and I see it frequently compared to another movie called Your Name. Has anyone here watched it?

Just curious because it's pretty cheap to rent on Amazon Prime (and buy, too, I guess, if I end up liking it enough). They even have the English dub, which is pretty rare for any anime on Amazon Prime.

40. Final Fantasy IX (Eerieka)
zWQVYu9

Like Metal Gear Solid 2, I probably spend more time pointing out Final Fantasy IX's weak points relative to the better games in the series than its good ones because Board 8 overrates it to high heaven. It's still a great game, and there's no shame in being the weakest of Square's Golden Era because the five Final Fantasy games in five years is the best stretch for any series ever. When Final Fantasy IX came out, it was touted as a throwback game, filled with homages and references to previous games in the series, as well as a return to a more traditional medieval fantasy setting after the last two games had been more futuristic. However, when I first played it in 2000, that didn't mean much to me, since the only Final Fantasy games I had played up to that point were VII, VIII, and Tactics! Of course, I can appreciate those things now, although I do find it weird that they also claimed they would bring back crystals (it even says "The Crystal Comes Back!" on the back of the case), but you don't even see the crystal in the logo until the very end of the game.

Anyway, as far as the game itself goes, where do I even begin? The main cast is solid (except for Eiko, who is in contention for worst party member of the 3-D games), although Zidane, Vivi, Dagger, and Steiner are clearly above the other four to me. Freya and Amarant had potential, but they sort of get discarded along the way other than having a couple of sequences centered around them. Quina is decent enough comic relief from time to time ("Frog...is talking...Maybe I eat it...?"), although I did take great pleasure in learning that s/he can eat the Earth Guardian. Final Fantasy IX has a pretty great ensemble of NPCs, too. Kuja might be my favorite villain in the series, design aside. Beatrix is cool, too, although I wish they had made it possible for you to win at least one of the boss fights against her, even if the ensuing cutscene has her owning you anyway. Tantalus is a really fun group, too. It was always a good time when they were on screen. One of my favorite aspects of Final Fantasy IX that I'm sad the series hasn't brought back is the Active Time Event, which lets you break away from the main characters to see what other characters are doing elsewhere. It's a very slice of life type mechanic, because they're mostly optional (occasionally there's a mandatory one you can't ignore), but they tend to be fun segments that build cast chemistry (key phrase for me).

Final Fantasy IX's battle system gets a lot of flack, some of it deserved. Perhaps the biggest critique is how slow everything is, but I honestly don't mind it all that much. I'm not playing an RPG because I want a fast-paced experience. The lamest thing to me is the fact that you can't store up your Trances, and they automatically activate when your gauge is full. I suppose it was an overreaction to how spammable Final Fantasy VIII's were, but they went too far in the opposite direction. Another annoying thing is how low the steal rate is in this game. I don't understand how a thief can be so bad at his job! Other than that, it's fine. The game has some pretty good boss fights, with the Beatrix and Kuja fights, along with Black Waltz No. 3, being some of my favorites. The regular battle theme is great, too. Speaking of which, Final Fantasy IX might have my favorite soundtrack in the series. I think Uematsu has claimed it's his favorite, too, and it's the most represented game in Curtain Call, so I guess I'm not alone on that. On a related note, You're Not Alone might be the best song in the series, too. It almost single-handedly makes the scene it plays during as good as it is. I could say more, but I'm already running out of space to fit this all in one post! I didn't even say anything about the story, but oh well! Argh, it's so hard being concise with this series!

Bonus Question: Which Final Fantasy has your favorite soundtrack?

41. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Snake555555555)
zLfFohM

Some people may think I'm not a big fan of this game because I criticize it relative to the other three major games in the series, but that's just because I think they're all better (yes, even MGS4, which nobody nominated, sadly). On its own, Metal Gear Solid 2 is a pretty great game. The Tanker is a masterpiece of level design. It introduces you very effectively to all the new gameplay elements and prepares you perfectly for the rest of the game beyond it. It's short enough that you can get through it easily in a single sitting, too. Also, Otacon attempting to mimic Mei Ling's proverbs is one of the greatest comedic things in the entire series. I save compulsively during the Tanker just so I can hear them all. Then the game gives you a taste of just how insane it's going to get with the whole "I LIVE ON THROUGH THIS ARM!" twist with Liquid Ocelot.

Once you switch over to controlling Raiden (spoilers), the gameplay and level design still remain sharp. I love the Big Shell. I think it's really well laid out and manages to feel diverse despite technically being a singular location. The new gameplay changes and additions from the original Metal Gear Solid are fun, and it just feels really smooth overall. There are a lot of excellent boss fights here, too, like the Harrier, Vamp, Solidus, and the RAY overload. The Fatman fight sucks though. Speaking of Fatman and sucking, Dead Cell might be one of the weakest parts of the game. They're all pretty bad except for Solidus. Thankfully, Liquid Ocelot is there to carry the villainous dead weight. Metal Gear Solid 2 has a few missteps in its plot, but most of them can be forgiven and overlooked because they at least tried to do something crazy and forward thinking, particularly with its discussion on memes. They even justified retreading large portions of Metal Gear Solid's plot under the guise of the S3 Plan! Kojima was never crazier than he was here, and I love it. On the other hand, Dead Cell was just an unfortunate mistake.

My favorite part of Metal Gear Solid 2 is actually the Emma Emmerich plotline. I thought she was a really good character, and the outcome of that arc, culminating in the surprisingly heartwarming bro-handshake/hug between Snake and Otacon, is really powerful emotionally. Granted, in typical MGS2 fashion, it's not exactly a perfect scenario because Otacon's "confession" is awkward as heck, but otherwise, it's great. The plot takes insanity up to eleven (or maybe 61 would be a more accurate number) from that point on, and that might be the most memorable part of the game for some people. For me, it's E.E. She might be the best female character in the series!

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Metal Gear character?

speaking of things I hopefully don't regret, I have decided to start up Doki Doki Literature Club

I've been replaying Ace Attorney lately, but my throat has been killing me since yesterday, so I'm trying not to talk much if I don't have to. Since I usually like to read the playable character's dialogue out loud when I play, it's either force myself through it or play something else. I decided to go with something else. I suppose I should be reading this nameless, faceless protagonist's stuff aloud, but I usually don't do that for the particularly dialogue heavy VNs, like Umineko or Clannad, especially when the protagonist provides all the background information between dialogue, too. It's just overkill.

first thing I'm noticing is that it's weird that all the character models visibly sink when they're sad

just had all four girls lined up in a row and they all sank one after the next

then they all rose up simultaneously when their mood changed

42. ESPN Extreme Games (LeonhartFour)
fgsfRcd

This game was retroactively renamed 1Xtreme for the Greatest Hits version because Sony lost the ESPN licensing rights, and it spawned sequels, 2Xtreme and 3Xtreme, which were nowhere near as good. This was one of the earliest PS1 games, and I've still got the huge jewel case it came in that they used to use before they made them smaller. Anyway, I know Board 8 isn't big on "real sports," whether in real life or in video games, but I played a ton of them growing up. I've mostly outgrown them now, but they were a big part of my childhood and teenage years. My best friend and I played this one in particular all the time. I'm not even sure what led us to get this game since neither one of us cares anything about the actual Extreme Games. Then again, we also played a bunch of NHL '94 (another excellent sports game), and we didn't watch hockey either. I tend to like sports games that are more unorthodox, which is part of the reason I'm not into sports games anymore, because stuff like this or NFL Blitz (yet another awesome sports game) is a thing of the past. Extreme Games isn't just a straight racing game. There are absurd obstacles, such as literal cable cars crossing the tracks when you race in San Francisco, along with stuff like barrels, tires, and even animals (the bloody mess in the above pic is from a chicken being run over. No, seriously). You can even punch or kick other racers to knock them down. There are also a number of different colored gates throughout each race, and you get access to a bonus level if you can pass through them all before you get to the finish line. Some of them require you to activate secret passageways. Those gates (combined with how well you finish) are what give you money to upgrade your equipment.

There are four different pieces of equipment you can use to race: Bicycle, skateboard, roller blades, and even a luge board. The luge was definitely the worst and I never used it because you can literally be run over by the bicycle, and their acceleration is extremely slow, to the point that you can actually get stuck trying to go uphill if you're going too slowly. I preferred using the bicycle because it can tank the movable obstacles that knocks over all the other racer types. For a long time, my friend and I were bad at this game to the point that we nearly always finished near the back of the pack. After each race, they have an "analyst" who talks about your performance in canned FMVs, and if you have a bad finish, she'll trash talk the crap out of you, which was great. It motivated us to get better, and when we'd win races, we'd skip her trying to heap praises on us because she didn't deserve that honor after all the junk she said about us! We eventually got to the point where we'd dominate the races and our only competition was each other, which was a lot of fun, too. I wish they still made sports games like this.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite "real" sports game?

43. Sonic Mania (handsomeboy2012)
2PZzZXC

Since the Genesis games, Sonic Team has tried on a few different occasions to attempt a return to form, but Sonic Advance and Sonic 4 both fell short of the standard. Sonic Rush was decent enough, but it still didn't feel quite right. That's why classic Sonic fans were so hyped up for Sonic Mania because it had the look and feel we were all searching for (Mania even promotes itself as a true successor to the Genesis games), and it delivered on content, too. They had a good balance between remixed classic zones and brand new ones. Out of the new ones, I liked Mirage Saloon and Titanic Monarch the most. I wish they'd stop redoing the Green Hill and Chemical Plant Zones in all these throwback Sonic games, but Flying Battery, Hydrocity, and Lava Reef were all good. The biggest surprise to me was Oil Ocean, first that it was included at all, and second by how good it was. It was a really fun gameplay mechanic to include the Fire Shield here, and to have it ignite all the oil if you touched it with the shield was a neat touch. I'd go down the slides over and over again just for the heck of it to see it light all the oil on fire again (Kids, don't try this at home). Also, the old zones weren't just simple copy-pastes. They added a lot of new stuff and new routes, which was cool.

I'm a huge fan of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It's a top ten game for me (which I can safely say since it's not on the list!). There are two things I really like about it. First is the fact that there are multiple routes through just about any given act, so you can potentially experience the same level differently when you replay it. The second cool thing is the fact that Sonic and Knuckles don't have the same route through all the Zones. Due to the fact that Knuckles can climb, glide, and break through walls even the Spin Dash can't, they're able to use him in different ways, and the level design reflects that. They don't even play all the same levels or fight all the same bosses, and sometimes the bosses have separate movesets and patterns for each character. Sonic Mania brings both of those things back, and that may have sold me on it more than anything.

Plus, one of the biggest appeals of Sonic games in general is the fact that you can notice yourself gradually getting better and moving through the level faster as you go through them again, so that really adds to its replay factor. It's a really satisfying feeling nailing a good run on a zone that used to give you a lot of trouble. This is definitely a game I'll be going back to in the future, which is exactly what you want from a platformer, in my opinion. One of the worst things I think you can say about a platformer is, "I never want to play that again." They're made to be replayed, learned, and eventually mastered. Sonic captures that sensation better than most series out there, which is why it's one of my favorites.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite 2-D Sonic game?

I have a meltdown over the Ange stuff, too, but maybe not for the same reason as your friend.

Well, Final Fantasy doesn't re-use specific battle systems that often to begin with, so it probably wasn't going to happen regardless, at least not within the FF series. There's always a chance some other RPG will borrow elements from it, I guess.

Finished with 1-2 investigation day 1. I really like that fake-out bad ending if you choose "Go home" instead of choosing to defend Maya.

Also, I've always wondered why the police considered DL-6 to be so unsolvable that they needed to consult a spirit medium. Like, there were only three people in that elevator, and it couldn't have been suicide for reasons they state during 1-4. It doesn't feel like that complex of a mystery on the surface (although it kinda turned out to be one in reality). Maya makes it sound like the police consulting a spirit medium was a rare event, but maybe the only rarity was that it leaked out.

44. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Drakeryn)
6jVuIgr

That Red Truth sums up the struggle of Umineko fairly well, and since Beato said it in red, there's no reason to doubt it! First of all, I'm not going to indulge this whole "does this count as a game or not?" debate because it's dumb and I don't care. Anyway, Umineko is difficult to talk about without delving into spoilers, but I'll do my best. There are eight episodes, and they mostly tell the same murder mystery story each time with different details. It's a little more complicated than that in practice, especially with the last couple of episodes, but that's the gist. The first four episodes are called the Question Arc, and the last four episodes are called the Answer arc. As you could probably deduce, the first half presents you with all of the relevant facts, and the second half helps you piece it all together, although it rarely gives you the answer outright to the major plot points. It was fun trying to look for all the hints and clues that were fairly obvious on hindsight on my second time through the game.

However, on my first run through Umineko, I wasn't actively trying to solve the mystery at all. I was in it for the roller coaster thrill ride, with crazy twists and turns, trying to figure out who dies and who will survive, rooting for the heroes to beat the witch. They'd have crazy magic battle sequences, but I wasn't thinking, "Oh, I wonder how much of this is real," while I was watching it. I was just taking in the spectacle. Umineko is great at getting your hopes up and then punching you right in the gut at the exact moment when it would be most painful. Episode 4 in particular had the biggest one for me. That episode is kind of odd. The first half of it might be the worst stretch in the series, while the second half might be the best stretch. In general, Episodes 3-6 are my favorites, although they're all mostly good. Unfortunately, Episode 8 didn't stick the landing very well, so I think it left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. I think that's probably part of the reason it's not remembered as fondly as perhaps it otherwise might, because while the series was still in progress, Umineko was beloved and had a rabbid following on the board. Of course, when you're dealing with something as plot-intensive as this, a bad ending can largely ruin the overall experience, so it's understandable.

No discussion about Umineko would be complete without mentioning the music. It's got one of the best soundtracks you'll find in anything anywhere. Whether you want something fast-paced and intense or something slower and filled with emotion (and nearly everything in between), it's got it all. The most popular heavy-hitters (like worldenddominator, dreamenddischarger, discolor, Hope, etc.) need no introduction, especially if you're into the VGMC, since Umineko has dominated that contest over the years. Every episode has at least one retired track. As far as my personal favorites go, I'm a big fan of Black Liliana, Thanks for Being Born, Mortal Stampede, ruriair, Rain, and many others. Honestly, I'd recommend playing the game to hear those songs instead of listening to them on their own because the context totally matters and enhances my enjoyment of them.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Umineko episode?

Skies of Arcadia beated! Man, what a great game. I won't gush about it since I still have to do a writeup about it in my game rankings topic later (</shameless plug>), but I love it. Also, it feels like every time I replay a game I haven't played in a while, I gain a new appreciation for one of the characters. This time around, it was Fina. I really enjoyed her character progression, and you can practically hear Vyse's personality shining through in her speech at the Great Silver Shrine. She's just really good. Also, Skies of Arcadia has a really good ending. It's brief but wraps things up nicely, so it leaves you feeling good inside after you're done.

Not sure if I'll go back and do much post-game stuff. I got all the Discoveries, found all the Moonfish, and beat all the Bounties. The rest of the stuff you have to do to get the Vyse the Legend ranking is rather grindy (Defeating 2500 enemies in particular is just augh), which is why I've never done it, so who knows.

Character rankings: Vyse > Fina > Drachma > Aika > Belleza > Ramirez > Gilder > Piastol > De Loco > Galcian > Enrique > Gregorio > Vigoro > Alfonso > Teodora

Not going to rank every single Crew member or Bounty because that's a ton of characters.

And now for a new addition to the female character rankings:

Nagato > Maya > Yakumo > Kurisu > Chizuru > Yukiko > Fina > Aqua > Makoto > Shoko > Mitsuru > Yui > Takano > Yachiyo > Shiori > Eru > Wagatsuma > Ritsu > Akane > Pepper > Amy > Rin > Namine > Peach > Botan > Yurippe > Mikasa > Eureka > Art3mis > Valentine > Mizuno > Zelda > Vera > Elizabeth > Cora > Kotori
