Great introduction to Ryunosuke and Kazuma. Jezaille Brett is everything you'd want from a starter villain. Like a lot of modern AA, it goes on longer than it needs to, but it's a solid start to this duology.

Could it be 2-2? None of those characters get me excited, and Morgan is the most wasted important character in the series.

It is a giant letdown after the way 6-5 ended. It's a big nothing case that relies entirely on fanservice to be enjoyable (which for me it is, but it's not exactly going out on a high note).

Poor Athena and Trucy just ran out of things to do after their plots got wrapped up.

It's not necessarily that. They just needed an excuse for them not to be involved in the case so we could have Maya instead.

It's at least more of a justification than leaving Apollo out of 5-6, which was just, "hey stay at the office in case someone comes by and clean the toilets while you're at it"

Mostly just for the delight of having a true Phoenix/Maya case again after so long. The rest of the case is fine, albeit predictable.

You'd only give Virtua Fighter credit for being first.

I mean, you did have a run of games that imitated its style, but I think it was relatively short lived.

Ring outs might have been a big influence on Smash though...!

Yeah, I almost put SFIV on mine because its importance can't be overstated, but I also didn't want to give SF two games on a Rushmore as robust as fighters.

Also just because other fighters did things before Smash did them doesn't mean other fighters didn't draw from Smash. I doubt Square tries Dissidia without Smash's success because Ehrgeiz was an abject failure. Heck, some of the other games you mentioned weren't big successes either. I mean, this is just speculation, of course, but you don't have to be the first one to do something to be influential. Smash proving that style can work when it hadn't worked before in some instances was important in its own right, I think.

Maybe not in its mechanics, but it's one of those fighters that probably doesn't exist without Smash's success, at least not in the form it took.

I dislike using sales numbers as a barometer of impact. That feels like least common denominator stuff.

I guess I'm nearing the endgame of Rebirth since a ton of new sidequests popped up all over the place. So I assume once we head out for the Temple of the Ancients, we'll be streamlining it the rest of the way. I suppose I should have been expecting this, but it still caught me off guard a bit that we're getting this close to the end!

We should probably be giving Super Street Fighter II Turbo credit for popularizing the super meter since that's in every 2-D Fighter now

(Although it wasn't actually the first game to use it. That was TMNT Tournament Fighters)

Well, I'd say Smash codified it more than invented it.

Which is what we're giving SF2 credit for (and Tekken/SC instead of Virtua Fighter).

Which is fine. I don't care if competitive Smash players are playing other stuff either! That's a very tiny percentage of the overall fanbase.

I'm not concerned about whether the competitive fighting guys are playing Smash. I'd say they're more likely to be snobs about Smash than the average fan.

I wonder if the genre would be as healthy without Smash's existence.

I guess people would argue that the Smash fanbase is different from the general fighting game fanbase, but I think it did expand the base.

You can argue the fact that almost all of them suck is a reason to exclude Melee but to say it's had no impact on the genre is flatly untrue

Turnabout Legacy would be a good one, too, because of the Founder's Orb and the case centering around Apollo's relationships with his two greatest influences, Dhurke and Phoenix.

By placing an arbitrary division between G2-4 and G2-5. There is no logical explanation for splitting them in two, and so you've lied to the player by making them think there was still a finale to come when (surprise!) you've been in the finale all along.

People really get hung up on whether 5-4/5-5 should be one case or 6-5 should be two cases. They both work just fine the way they are, so I don't know why this topic gets brought up so much.

If anything, I think 6-5 benefits from being one case because I'm not giving a near perfect score to either half individually. Seems like some people here would, which I understand. The individual cases are probably 8.5/9s, but it's the total package (particularly the Apollo/Dhurke part of it) that gives it that impact.

GAA2 is the one place where the game outright lies to you, and even then, I'm not going to dock its score for it.

I just watched the first episode tonight

The first case isn't very good. It's a lot of what's wrong with modern AA (cases are too long, too many long animations, just general bloat).

But if you can't buy into the conceit of Khura'in then 6-5 may not land with you anyway.

I'm down for some more of Idris Elba as Knuckles, and his performance does not disappoint. Too bad that Sonic and Tails are only going to be in this first episode though.

My only issue with this case is Nahyuta trying to take the fall right after Amara gets shot. Just ground the case to a halt after all the momentum it had built up, and it didn't quite stick the landing as a result.

I love almost everything else about the case, and I'm sure it'll all get touched on. I just want to praise the Phoenix/Edgeworth investigation segment in Khura'in. Just a perfect bit of fanservice. It's not quite Edgeworth in 3-5 good, but just seeing Phoenix and Edgeworth be friends instead of rivals was such a treat.

I doubt it. He's just a name at this point, like Zeke.
