https://www.inquirer.com/columnists/beauty-pageants-miss-world-miss-america-miss-usa-miss-teen-usa-crown-act-20191218.html

If were going by pageant results, 2019 has been deemed the year of the beautiful black woman. On Saturday, Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica was crowned Miss World. Last week, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa was named Miss Universe. And in May, Kaliegh Garris and Cheslie Kryst were crowned Miss Teen USA and Miss USA, respectively. Until Thursday, when a new Miss America is crowned, Nia Franklin retains the title. Is crowning five black women queens of the worlds most prestigious pageants historic? Yes. Is it a big deal that theyre reigning at the same time? Yes. Thats important. Thats dope. Thats the definition of #blackgirlmagic. But while the attention is deserved, I find the intentions questionable. Why are pageants around the world suddenly so inclusive?

Beauty pageants have a history mired in racism, so much so that black people for decades had to hold pageants in our own communities and college campuses because we werent allowed to participate in white pageants. That means even the most beautiful black women because lets face it, the emphasis is on beauty didnt have the same access as, perhaps, even less attractive white counterparts for scholarship opportunities, jobs, or exposure. It wasnt until 1970 that Cheryl Brown, Miss Iowa, became the first black woman to compete in the national Miss America pageant. I was just 11 when Vanessa Williams stunned the world and became the first black Miss America in 1984. And while I remember how happy we were that a black woman had finally won, I also remember feeling that black beauty pageant winners would only ever be light-skinned girls with blue/green eyes. Regardless of that achievement, beauty pageants went about their business, crowning winners and putting mainstream beauty first. It wasnt until repercussions from the #MeToo movement that pageant organizers, especially Miss America, really looked inward. All of a sudden they were rethinking the long-held belief that, above all, a womans most important job was to fit a certain beauty ideal. Competition between women became much more frowned upon. We should be holding each other up, not tearing each other down based on silly things like the curl of our eyelashes, right? Intelligence trumped evening gowns.

Finally. Thats why I find it peculiar that now is when black women are being crowned at such a clip. Are we just being included to de-emphasize the inherent sexism of pageants? Even though all of these sisters with varying complexions and hair textures are defining beauty, Im left feeling like we were invited to the party after everyone else went home. This world, however, still has a chance to prove me wrong. If, as a result of these five wins, everyday black women are treated like we are beautiful, there is hope.

I saw a comment on Reddit saying they can technically hold off on sending it to the Senate indefinitely, so say the election rolls around and Trump wins but the Senate somehow turns Democrat, then they could send it over and remove him.

Can it really happen that way?

If that situation happens. Trump wins and Senate becomes democrat. Doesn't that just mean we get Pence as President.

https://www.salon.com/2019/12/19/pelosi-threatens-to-delay-sending-impeachment-case-to-senate-until-mcconnell-agrees-to-fair-trial/

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., suggested Wednesday that she could indefinitely delay sending the two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the upper chamber until Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., concedes to the Democratic Partys request for a fair trial." In an historic vote, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of justice Wednesday. While the vote was mostly drawn across party lines, more House members voted to impeach Trump than either of the other two presidents previously impeached. But the two parties are at an impasse on how to proceed with Trumps Senate trial. McConnell wants a speedy trial with no witnesses, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called for a weekslong trial with new witnesses. Democrats have also criticized McConnell, who has vowed to coordinate the trial with the White House and said he will not be an impartial juror. This is what I dont consider a fair trial, Pelosi said Wednesday. Pelosi added that she would not send the articles of impeachment to the Senate unless McConnell agrees to a fair trial.

We will make our decision as to when we are going to send it when we see what they are doing on the Senate side, she continued. So far, we have not seen anything that looks fair to us. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., told The New York Times that dozens of Democrats want Pelosi to hold off on sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate out of concern that McConnell would not conduct a fair trial. What is gained by accelerating this process? he asked, adding that Democrats should let the speaker work her magic to get some sort of assurance if its possible that there will be a level playing field. Pelosi said Wednesday that the House would not appoint impeachment managers to prosecute the case in the Senate until the Democrats conflict with McConnell is resolved. We cannot name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side, and I would hope that would be soon, she said. But some Democrats have also urged Pelosi not to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate at all, where Trump is all but guaranteed to be acquitted. Pelosi has not ruled that out, according to The Times. The Times reported that House leaders are not seriously considering that option, but House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., the No. 3 Democrat in the House, told CNN Thursday that he would not send the articles of impeachment to the Senate at all.

https://www.polygon.com/xbox/2019/12/13/21021143/mixer-streamer-canceled-banned-twitter-joke-sex-offender-fortnite

A verified streamer on Mixer lost his partnership with Microsoft after he tweeted a joke about being a sex offender playing Fortnite with kids. Harrison HarrisonJr Patrick Stewart, a Mixer streamer since 2017 with 80,000 followers, summarily lost just about everything about his presence on Mixer, too. All of his past streams have been deleted, his view count has been wiped, his biography has been deleted, and the headline for the main stream (offline, of course) reads simply, Im sorry. Per The Hollywood Reporter (via Kotaku), on Dec. 5, HarrisonJr tweeted, underneath a photo of himself in sunglasses and a cheesy mustache, Come watch a registered sex offender plays [sic] Fortnite with 10 year olds!! HarrisonJr quickly deleted the tweet, and followed that with an apology. Mixers rules of user conduct are pretty specific about this, too, saying It is NEVER OK to discuss sex and a person under 18 at the same time, in boldface and italics. Several Mixer streamers brought it to Microsofts attention, demanding HarrisonJr be banned.
Contrition notwithstanding, Microsoft terminated him on Wednesday.

https://www.themarysue.com/mena-massoud-lack-of-opportunity-post-aladdin/

One of the difficulties of being a non-white actor in Hollywood is that despite being in a hit film, despite that film making over a billion dollars, that exposure does not inherently lead to opportunity. That is a reality that Aladdin star Mena Massoud has become aware of following the success of the Disney live-action film. In a candid interview with The Daily Beast, the Egyptian-Canadian actor talked about that, despite the way it might seem on paper, playing that role did not lead to any calls or auditions. Im kind of tired of staying quiet about it, he says. I want people to know that its not always dandelions and roses when youre doing something like Aladdin. He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers. Its none of those things. I havent had a single audition since Aladdin came out. Massoud continues on to explain that a lot of people have the idea that hes already made it, but that isnt the case: []Im sitting here being like, OK, Aladdin just hit $1 billion. Can I at least get an audition? Like Im not expecting you to be like, heres Batman. But can I just get in the room? Like, can you just give me a chance? So, its not always what you think.

Whats happening to Massoud is common for a lot of actors of color. If you look at Academy Award winner Lupita Nyongo after 12 Years a Slave in 2013, the biggest lead roles she got after (that didnt involve mo-cap) were Queen of Katwe (2016), Black Panther (2018), and US (2019), all films directed by people of color (Mira Nair, Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele). Its also happened to Halle Berry, Dev Patel, Gabourey Sidibe, and many more. The few that do get to make it and hold on to that flame of stardom are exceptions to the rule. Plus, we know Hollywood loves to have their constant rotation of the same big-name non-white actor of a chosen group. That leaves very little room for people to have careers that highlight their talent and ambitions, especially if they want to play more than stereotypes. Massouds first onscreen role was a character named al Qaeda #2 in the CW show Nikita, and he decided that he would not play roles like that anymore, but that means he ends up being, as he called it, a wild card when it comes getting picked: Theres always a wild card or two when youre casting, he says. Im usually the wild card. In a room of Caucasian guys, a director might be like, OK, lets see, like, two guys who arent. And maybe theyll be the wild card choice. Sadly, this reminds me a lot of Star Trek alumni Alexander Siddig. Despite being a delight on Deep Space Nine, being a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts a big chunk of his filmography is playing terrorist or terrorist-adjacent characters, despite his most notable role being a doctor.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-impeachment-inquiry/mcconnell-there-s-no-chance-trump-removed-office-n1101286

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that there was no chance that President Donald Trump would be removed from office in any impeachment trial and that it wouldnt surprise him if some Democrats split from their party and voted in the presidents favor. The case is so darn weak coming from the House, McConnell said in an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News on Thursday night, as the House Judiciary Committee continued to debate articles of impeachment. We know how it's going to end. There's no chance the president's going to be removed from office.

While the Democratic-controlled House is likely to vote to impeach the president, it is up to the Senate to conduct a trial and vote to actually remove Trump from office. The Senate requires a two-thirds majority to convict, or 67 votes. The GOP holds a 53-47 advantage, but that would still require 20 Republicans to break from the president, assuming that every Democrat votes to convict Trump though, as McConnell suggested, that assumption is not a given.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/09/sports/russia-doping-ban.html

The worlds top antidoping authority on Monday banished Russia from international competition including next summers Olympic Games in Tokyo for four years, the latest and most severe punishment yet connected to a yearslong cheating scheme that has tarnished sports, rendered Russia a sports pariah and exacerbated tension between Moscow and the West. Under the ban, Russias flag, name and anthem would not be allowed at the Tokyo Games next summer or the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, though the competitive effects may be minimal: Russian athletes not implicated in doping are expected to be allowed to compete in the Olympics and other world championships, but only under a neutral flag. The World Anti-Doping Agency also barred Russian sports and government officials from the Games and prohibited the country from hosting international events. The decision, which Russia has 21 days to appeal, most likely will set up a series of confrontations in the coming months and years as Russia fights to have its athletes and teams compete at major events. The ban comes four years after the first details of a conspiracy that peaked at the 2014 Sochi Olympics were made public, and only months after more recent revelations of a failed Russian cover-up that involved the manipulation of test results. The punishment was hailed by some as a tough step, though many declared it insufficient as a deterrent; some critics and athletes have called instead for a blanket ban with no exceptions.

Even some officials from the global antidoping organization, known as WADA, said the punishment was too lax because it left open the possibility that hundreds of Russian athletes, including some who may have been complicit in the doping or the cover-up, will appear in Tokyo, just as they did at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The view of many is that its largely superficial, said Beckie Scott, a Canadian Olympian who once had her bronze medal upgraded to gold when the two Russians who beat her were disqualified for doping. Its particularly disappointing in light of that fact that WADA had the authority and power to impose a much stronger and serious sanction and they chose not to.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/un-expert-urges-ethiopia-to-stop-shutting-down-internet-1.4721434

A United Nations expert on the freedom of expression said he has urged Ethiopian officials to stop shutting down the internet. David Kaye, the UN's special rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, told reporters in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, that he is concerned with the frequent internet shutdowns carried out by the government. "I've also experienced an internet shut down here in Ethiopia in the past week," he said, referring to a brief shutdown on Dec. 5 that Ethiopian officials said was to stop a cyber-attack targeting the country's financial institutions. Ethiopia has shut down the internet nine times in 2019, mostly during national exams and public protests, he said. "Internet shutdowns are almost always in violation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression," said Kaye. "I want to strongly urge the government to not use internet shutdown as a tool. I've asked several times

`Where do you have the authority in law to shut down the internet?' Nobody could give me an answer." Ethiopia is one of several African countries that have blocked the internet or specific social media sites during elections or periods of crisis. Kaye stressed that social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube have a relatively small presence in Ethiopia right now but they have an "extraordinary responsibility" to moderate contents to make sure postings are accurate. Kaye praised the reforms implemented by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who recently won the Nobel Peace Prize for achieving peace with neighbouring Eritrea.

Nothing solidifies Rogan being Oprah for dudes more than him putting his seal of approval on a book and watching it skyrocket to #1 on best sellers list

Lol max NBA contract is like 200 million. NFL players can't even touch that either.

It's just bizarre.

It's like watching Glee. Very hard to enjoy the show knowing one of the main characters is a rapist.

That guy killed himself but yea agreed. Along with that one who died from a drug overdose.

I remember Amadou Diallo being a big deal in 1999. Seinfeld had that episode about Elaine dating a black guy.

Cause shes Vanna fucking White thats why

It just looks bad that the mouse characters just stand there pointing. Vanna as another poster said at least pretends or actually touches them. The games seem faster since we don't have to wait for Vanna to get out of the way.

She is hosting and Mickey is doing the letters but a computer is automatically filling in the letters. So I don't get why Vanna is needed when Pat gets better.

Here is clip from last night.
