I don't refuse to talk to them, but the moment i hear something like "FAKE NEWS" i'm instantly out. Like as a baseline most people that want to start talking politics are not interested in an even or productive conversation, they're looking to rant about stuff at a basic surface level and with any luck form an echo chamber. in my experience when dealing with trump people irl these can either just faff around the usual "we need to build a wall" and talking about how trump is saving the country with tax cuts they dont get and jobs they would never apply for, or sometimes wanders off into directions like "when you think about it blacks were responsible for slavery" or talking about buying guns to protect themselves from immigrants (I live in an area of the country with such a small immigration rate that they would have been lucky to ever have seen even a single muslim as they were speaking of).

This is because this stuff is the core of the right wing populism that got Trump elected in a lot of states. It revolved around racial and morality politics. Sure, some people might be able to go into detail about how Trump made the even richer but most people like the idea of the guy more than anything he's done for them, because he hasn't done anything for most people. So they fall back in the nasty stuff.

And then the problem becomes once you hear people talking about how they think all this horrible shit, it drains your will to talk to them. I'm sorry, but that's just how it is; it's not "just politics," it really speaks to the core of who you are as a person when you say some things

Others here have said it better, but it's exhausting trying to talk to people who are like a brick wall. Nothing will convince them of anything different. I live in Mississippi which is the most right wing and religious state. The shit I hear people bring up is no different from what internet trolls and other losers say and trying to debate them is just as big of a waste of time. How are you supposed to talk to people who can't see reason or logic at all and would rather live in their own fantasy world?

i ran into this alot with my predominantly Republican family. At first i felt like I had to speak up about some of the things, which they took as an attack because i never challenged anything like that before with them. now they are far more extreme and it just isnt worth getting into it with them

That doesn't really change the fact that they'll scream "fake news" when there's literal video and audio evidence proving that the news is indeed real.

I feel like some of them are so deep in the kool-aid that they could go to a rally, watch him decapitate a puppy and shoot an infant, and then see a report on the news the next day saying "President Trump decapitated a puppy and murdered a baby on stage at his rally" and they'd scream "FAKE NEWS" even though they literally fucking witnessed it themselves

I've had similar experiences - plenty of conservative friends (I live in a Midwestern town next to a military base, and the town has like 50 churches so there's conservatives everywhere) who would politely disagree with liberal views. Then Trump showed up and it's like they're all completely different people. They bring up Trump out of the blue just to praise him and then talk shit on liberals, and I'm just sitting there like "dude I just asked what your family plans for the holidays are"

I don't see how those sentiments would be mutually exclusive. I would expect the far left to share those same sentiments as a moderate liberal but be more extreme on other topics. In other words, the liberal tag is a big umbrella term that hosts both moderates and extreme lefts. Just like Conservatives house both moderates and far rights.

This. I talked to many Trump supporters back at college who were willing to engage in a productive discussion. But it's kinda hard to talk to someone who say I'm a "tool for the MSM" (I been dissing CNN before they even heard "fake news") or just dive into racism or homophobia.
