Digital easily. Like Drake said, it's too convenient and doesn't waste physical space. With the state of consoles now, there are fewer benefits to owning physical copies.

That being said, Nintendo is the exception for the wrong reasons as Para pointed out.

Phase 2 of Restricted Free Agency

KCF0107 posted...
3. I will publicly reveal all RFAs from user and A.I. teams that can be signed by other teams (AKA were offered a tender) plus their tender levels and the base kind of deal they are looking for.

4. I will give users four days to decide any action, if any, they wish to take. If they do wish to take further action, they will PM me.

The following post will contain a list of all the players (sorted by team) who were offered a tender in Phase 1. These are the players that you can attempt to sign away from other teams, and now is the time to do it. You can only do this with players from other teams. You can not sign your own RFAs to long-term deals.

In parenthesis will be the draft pick compensation that you would have to give up if you sign a player and their original team does not match it. To reiterate, you will not lose draft picks for merely offering a deal to a player. The original team also has to decline to match said offer in Phase 3.

Proceeding it will be a slashline. This slashline is the kind of deal that the player is looking for, but it is NOT the deal that you have to sign them to. You can offer them a contract between 1-7 years in length, but you need to keep in mind of the base deal when it comes to offering a customized offer.

If a player is asking for 4 / $8.00 mil / $1.60 mil, offering them 3 / $3.00 mil / $300k will certainly be shot down by the player. I only submit offers to players after the phase has ended, so in this scenario, you would have wasted your time, not to mention the user/AI might be also compelled to match such a below-market deal if it miraculously was accepted by the player.

In fact, if you really want a player, you will probably want to increase the amount of money (not necessarily the years) that a player is requesting to increase the odds of the user/AI with the player's rights will not match the deal. In this example, the player is looking for a contract that offers $2.00 mil a year with $400k in guaranteed money as 8.00 mil / 4 = $2.00 mil and $1.60 mil / 4 = $400k. Use the second and third figures in a slashline to use as a benchmark.

I have one last thing to mention. You can only attempt to sign someone if you have the draft pick compensation that would be needed to acquire them. If a player was signed to a high tender, they require 1st and 3rd round picks in compensation. If you don't have both, you cannot attempt to sign the player in question. Here are the teams who have RFA limitations due to trades from Season 8:
- Cowboys cannot sign anyone that requires a 1st round pick
- Falcons cannot sign anyone that requires a 3rd round pick
- Panthers cannot sign anyone that requires a 3rd round pick
- Steelers cannot sign anyone that requires a 1st, 4th, or 5th round pick
- Titans cannot sign anyone that requires a 5th round pick

I say potential because it is dependent on whether or not another team attempts to sign said RFA. Perhaps "possible" is a better word choice?

If by successfully signing a player, you mean the original team elects not to match the other team's offer, then yes, you will receive the applicable draft pick compensation.

Theoretically, a player drafted in the 1st round would result in having the same draft pick compensation if offered a low or mid tender. It has happened once in B8NFLL, and I totally forget how it went.

Steps to Restricted Free Agency

1. I will privately contact every user and inform them of their RFAs and the tender levels. If you don’t have any RFAs, then you won’t be notified.

2. Users will have three days to inform me which players they wish to sign and at what level.

Now by "any action you wish to take," I mean that everyone has an opportunity to attempt to sign RFAs from other teams. You might see some sticker shock but keep in mind that some positions are more expensive (WRs, DTs, QBs) than others (OLBs, Cs, TEs) relative to their overall rating. An 80 WR will usually be more expensive than a 90 C, and that's just how things are.

5. If a team attempts to sign another team’s RFA, then the user who owns the RFA’s rights will have two days to decide whether or not to match the offer. If you do not inform me of a decision, you are defaulted to NOT matching the deal.

Restricted Free Agency

This minor but oddly detailed offseason event is for a small subset of players who just completed their untampered rookie contract that was exactly three years in length. These players are not eligible to be originally offered multi-year contracts by the team that holds their rights but instead one-year contracts of fixed figures based on the tender level that you offer them.

Our Tender Levels for this season
No Tender = no potential draft pick compensation = $0
Low Tender = potential original round draft pick compensation = $790k
Mid Tender = potential 1st round draft pick compensation = $1.72 mil
High Tender = potential 1st + 3rd round draft pick compensation = $2.28 mil

Now, the mentioning of draft pick compensation there is only applicable if another team attempts to sign your player. It has no bearing on this first phase of RFA. It wouldn't make much sense if you had to give up draft picks to sign your own player now would it? Newcomers and people who don't have a good memory are certainly free to ask me what round a player was drafted in if that affects their tender level.

That being said, you might want to keep in mind about that draft pick compensation when you determine what tender to offer your player. If you think very highly of your player, you might want to offer the highest tender to deter other teams from attempting to sign them. If you don't consider a player to be a part of your future plans, you might want to offer the low tender so that they barely count against your cap space and you could end up even getting draft pick compensation if someone else wants him.

A word of advice from me: The full monetary amount attached to the tenders is NOT GUARANTEED and is usually less than what they would make on the open market, so there is essentially 0 risk to offering all of your players a tender unless you personally hate them with a passion.

You can also engage trade talks with other teams so that you can prearrange a trade that if X player is not signed by another team, you will trade them to Y team for Z compensation that might be lower than what Y team would have had to give up to sign them during RFA. In this scenario, you might want to offer the highest tender level to deter the maximum amount of teams from disrupting the trade.

Would you want me to make decisions on your behalf in that event? The deadline will be about 72 hours from when I send out the final PM.

Sometimes, life makes it difficult or even impossible to devote time to B8NFLL during its busy portions. Instead of idling, I highly recommend that you give me temporary control of your team (for a fixed or indefinite amount of time), and I will run them like they were my own. You can also give me instructions on what you would like me to do in case you have a specific vision of the direction of your team and want to make sure that I will follow it.

However, we see our fair share of idling every season, and I want to reiterate what happens in that event:

1. If you idle in Restricted Free Agency, I will sign a random RFA of yours to a random tender level (if you don't understand what I mean by that, I will explain tomorrow).

2. If you idle in signing your remaining free agents, I will sign a random one-third of your UFAs, and I do round up (if you had 16 UFAs, I will sign six).

3. If you idle during the NFL Draft, I will draft as if I was in charge of the team. Many teams still take advantage of this to their benefit.

4. If you idle the rookie signing period, then I will sign all of your rookies to the deals that they desire. If you have cap or roster space issues (former shouldn't be a problem unless you are the Redskins), I prioritize rookies whose position is one that still needs to be filled on your team (aka roster holes).

5. If you idle during free agency, then there will be no attempt to sign any of the premier free agents. If you have any holes on your roster at the conclusion of free agency, the AI will randomly sign players to fill those holes for you. There is one team that is currently the exception to this rule.

The Almighty Slashline!

Throughout an offseason, I will be posting or PMing a thousand or so of these, so it is imperative that you understand this simple line of numbers. Here's an example slash line with descriptions on what each figure means:

3 / $7.50 mil / $1.50 mil

3 = the length in years that the contract encompasses. With few exceptions, you can offer just about everyone a contract between 1-7 years.

$7.50 mil = the total amount of money that the player will receive as long as he is not released.

The average cap hit that a player will count against the cap is this figure divided by the first figure. In this example, it is $7.50 mil / 3 = an average cap hit of $2.50 mil. However, nearly all multi-season contracts will have ascending cap hits. That not only means that every season will not have a $2.50 mil cap hit, but players will count more against the cap the further they are along in their current contract. The cap hits for the above contract might end up being $2.08 mil, $2.45 mil, $2.97 mil.

If a player plays out his entire contract with the team that signed him to the contract, only the first two figures will matter. If not...

$1.50 mil = the amount from the total that is guaranteed. This means that no matter what, the team who signed the player to the contract is on the hook for that amount whether he plays out the contract, is traded, or released. If a player retires under contract, you are no longer financially responsible for them, so that is not a factor.

This figure can essentially be seen on the Team Financial sheet as Annual Bonus. The Annual Bonus is the total guaranteed money divided by the length of the contract. In this example, it is $1.50 mil / 3 = $500k. Continuing to use this example, if you trade or release this player after the first season of the contract, you will incur cap penalty (aka dead money) of $1.00 mil for the offseason that follows the release/trade. It is not $1.50 mil because he already played out one year, so his annual bonus was $500k x 2 = $1.00 mil.

On the flip side, anyone who is traded a player not only pays a lower cap hit due to the annual bonus being erased, but that also means that they are only on the hook for non-guaranteed money and can subsequently release or trade that player in the future without any financial repercussions.

To Do:
- Update Team Financials (less than 10 teams to go)
- Inform teams who have players demanding trades
- Explain the Slash Line (really just for VI)
- Mention offseason events (really just for VI)
- Explain what happens if you idle
- Move to the next segment of the offseason

I added LT Travelle Wharton (99 overall), RT Rob Pettiti (88 overall), DT Marcus Stroud (90 overall), and DT Darwin Walker (89 overall) to the trading block. I will probably only be willing to trade one from each position, but you never know.

Pettiti is currently under contract while the other three can only be acquired via sign-and-trades. I'm not sure that I want extra picks (Wharton would have to) and would prefer to go the route of upgrading picks and possibly collecting some depth players depending on the team.
