Okay, what you just said is something I have a huge problem with.

It's REALLY arrogant to think someone can pick up books on a subject and become as erudite as a PhD holder in those fields. People who say this have usually never been judged by a master of that field.

What education does is create standards to a subject. We say who in those fields has demonstrated competencies and then they are qualified in that field.

If everyone just read on something, there would be many different opinions on the same work and more than half of them would be pretty off the mark.

I have a 1000 page Art History book on my shelf. I can read it and learn more about art history than 2 college courses combined. Why do I need to pay a school thousands to do that and the only jobs I can find are work in a Museum and maybe as a Professor? The most common path for people with useless degrees is customer service...I've seen so many cases of it. You need a bit more schooling for Philosophy, but why bother?

There are many things I've picked up over the years that makes me as good, if not better than many people who majored in it. One of them is marketing. Another is project management. Most people sleepwalk through college, so their knowledge is fairly shallow. If I'm passionate enough about something and I want to spend time learning it, I can be just as good, if not better than many college majors.

You may think it's arrogant, but I'm confident about my abilities. When you think about how much time people spend on a major, it's not that much. Most colleges don't give you the good stuff until the last year, because their whole scheme is make you stretch everything to 4 years, when most of the material can easily be condense to a year.

Have you actually read that art book?

Why don't you try going head to head with a PhD in those fields and tell me how they trounced you.

The ironic thing is, as a PHD student, you learn everything by reading books and papers. There is little other structure besides a direction from your advisor. It's almost all self taught after courses are over.

Yes, surprised you remember, that was quite some time ago.
Even though I have a large disinterest in bio, which as you said is heavily competitive, I have been using the university resources to succeed, but to no avail. This semester I'm going to try the new PASC tutoring, you've probably heard of it. Still asking questions, doing extra credit, and discussing stuff with other students in class (which is pretty much what BIO203 is all about. Sit down for 2 hours talking about a few questions.)

Good for you. I recommend you also watch lectures from other schools online, MIT may have them for BIO. Also reading the textbook is always very helpful.

I'm not sure how it works in Bio exactly, but in CS all of the TA graders were PhD students, yet very few people ever came to me for help except before an exam. If you need help you should seek out a graduate TA during office hours. There is a good chance that they can help you out since otherwise we twiddle our thumbs in a loud TA room for 1-2 hours doing nothing lol.

But keeping up with readings, and HW, and other lectures, and tutoring is simply work. It's going to take up more than a full time job including your lectures. It really doesn't matter if you have passion, as long as you put in the work.

Biology, and I hate it.

I'm locked into a major I hate since my GPA is 1.97 and I need a 3.0 to swap. I'm only in bio because my parents kept pushing doctor doctor doctor on me and I had no interests in anything, so I went with it. Even now I still have no interest in anything. I want to drop out since I am a failure in every class I take, major or elective, but then I'd be living on the streets. Everyone I know has had a miraculous event that gave them a purpose and career goal and they love life, and here I am, a piece of shit who is moments away from being a bum or doing something drastic.

You should consider dropping out and figuring out what you want to do with your life. It's clearly not what your parents are pushing on you, and it would probably be better to get a fresh start at a new university with a new GPA if you end up deciding that your path involves going to college in a different field.

It's time for you to start making your own decisions about the path you are on.

I would love to drop out and work while I figure something out. Problem is that I have no backup plan. If I drop out, it's clear I am out of the house. Now, I wouldn't mind living in my car, but then I can't use my desktop computer, no way to shower (heard getting a gym membership would solve that, but monthy or yearly fees are still over my budget, I live by the penny due to paying for school every other semester), and I've heard it could cause issues with getting better jobs.

A fresh start at a new Uni is an option, my dad and I actually went over that last year, but it would be a waste if I don't have any interests in other majors.

But here's the biggest problem. Every summer since I've been in high school I have been mostly sitting around, bored. And every day since I've started college, right after HS, has been me trying to find something. I don't know how to put it, but there just isn't anything for me out there. I feel like I have no other choice but to eat shit and live a miserable life doing stuff I hate. I swear, my cognitive abilities have been declining rapidly ever since HS ended. Just everything I do, I'm a complete mess and a failure, and this, couple with no interests, means no motivation for life.

I know all I'm doing is complaining, but I don't know what else to do. I really wish some sort of divine intervention could just bestow upon me a cure for life's problems. I'm tired of all this stress, not everyone is meant to be happy.

Are you the one who goes to SBU? If so, undergrads are really competitive here and bio is probably the most competitive with all of the premeds.

You need to put in lots of hard work, that's it.

Wouldn't know since I didn't take it, are there proofs though?

Not really. It's multiple choice. There are some questions that ask you "Which of the following statements is true" and you can try to do a mini-proof of those to convince yourself. And there's sometimes a problem where you find the error in a proof.

Makes sense since it wouldn't be feasible to automatically grade proofs otherwise. Apparently there's a CS GRE but I don't think many schools use it since it also is dependent on what classes you took in undergrad.

It's a complete waste of time and just a money sink for programs like engineering, cs, etc. Some programs have specialized GRE like math and physics where I hear the content is actually relevant, such as doing proofs.

It is not completely right. The software already exists and is improving every day. The cost of the hardware is a few grand for a brand new Tesla. It's getting cheaper every year. The cost of the software is distributed across millions of vehicles, so it's cheap per car.

Updates happen wirelessly and instantly over the air. It's not much longer until autonomous software drives vehicles better than humans do.

The vehicles will not drive better than humans because... humans program them.

There will always be faults in the programming because we are not perfect, therefore our products will never be perfect.

The real problem is that automated vehicles would have to integrate with human drivers who are unpredictable and generally shit.

If we were to completely transfer to automated driving it would not be surprising is mortality rates plummeted from driving accidents.

But it brings up some subtle issues of morality in the programming. For example, should the car prioritize the passengers or a crowd of people if it were losing control? Obviously the passengers would prefer the crowd to be run over, but from an impartial view if the crowd was sufficiently large you would want the passengers to die.

The automobile industry will have to spend big bucks on the programming of any driverless vehicles.

Look at computers and how complicated they are, the fact they need updates/patches/bug fixes. Each time any of that is needed a programmer is required and most charge a lot of money to do their work.

Driverless vehicles will be more expensive then what we have now to compensate for the fee of programmers and the tech itself is not cheap.

This is completely wrong btw

It is... completely right.

And as it is now, driverless vehicles are being 'hacked' by painting white lines on roads, or covering stop signs. These are basic things that do not affect the average driver, but are huge deals for driverless vehicles.

Lets also not forget that they will need to communicate with one another... communication = open connections = ability to take control of remotely.

Automatic cars are use machine learning and computer vision to achieve the results. If we were to actually embrace the technology, you could make the training easier.

Also companies with R&D departments which are pushing the automated technology further have their own dedicated software engineering department.

God no.

Servers deserve to get paid whatever the people are willing to pay them. In a system where servers "get paid more" (an increased hourly wage) the following problems will arise:

- Prices on food will go way up
- Number of servers on hand will go DOWN
- People will stop eating out because muh prices
- Servers will make less money overall
- Fewer server positions will exist
- Fewer kitchen jobs will exist
- Fewer restaurants will exist
- More unskilled poors will be left begging on the streets

Please re-evaluate your existence before talking about things you don't understand.

Servers don't deserve more than minimum wage. This is the real reason servers bitch about tips, because they've tasted the amount of money they can cuck out of people for doing minimal tier work.

Also PhD in CS and related quantitative fields can open the door to research labs in industry for things like machine learning which would be barred off for essentially everyone else.

There was recently a leak about the characters, and people picked up on the fact that a lot of classic characters aren't there, specifically the X-Men characters like Magneto and Sentinel. How do you guys feel about people being hung up on that?

Peter Rosas: If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They're just doing things. Magneto, case and point, is a favorite because he has eight-way dash and he's really fast, right? So our more technical players, all they want to do is triangle jump and that kind of stuff. Well guess what, Nova can do the same thing, Captain Marvel can do the same thing. Ultron can do the same thing. Go ahead and try them out.

It's just the function that people are associating with the character, and there's no shortage of that. We made sure that all proper play styles can be represented with our current roster. The design team has been looking at that very closely. We wanted to make sure that if a legacy character doesn't happen to make the roster this time, that play style would still be represented. That somebody who has associated themselves with Magneto wouldn't be lost coming into this title.

This is supreme level deflection right here.

Instead of saying why characters that people like are missing or giving people an idea if they return he just says, the only reason they were popular is because of the way the character played and you should be interested in this game lol.

What do you want them to say? "We know that these are popular characters which is why we're withholding them for Day 1 DLC"

Id like to be a web dev one day, but i dont know too much aboute frameworks or SEO

I can develop sites from scratch, but im more of a back end developer. Even then, SEO is basically required and im shit at creating content

You don't need to know SEO unless you're trying to market yourself as an all in one freelancer. Normally you make the client provide you with content, then you write the site. EZ PZ.

"Why isnt my site on the first page of google?"

You're gonna make it far, son.

What kind of company even hires teams of web developers anymore unless they are a large company who needs more than just an online catalogue

Well, web dev is probably the most in demand CS job in general (also super uninteresting IMO as someone who's made a shitttttt ton of websites). And there's a thing called an SEO Analyst which deals with SEO and another thing called a content writer which writes content...

I doubt that unless youre working for a fortune 500 or a top firm that they would separate web development roles like that

Most places don't have a dedicated web team, they buy web services from a marketing/web agency. Places with a dedicated web shop will almost certainly split the roles.

Web dev is easily split since development is programming, SEO is marketing, and content creation is writing/marketing. What the fuck are you even talking about dude lmao... if you want a web dev job, learn how to program in web languages. That's it. Period.

I'm going to teach my children logic and programming from a young age. Their first job will be programming if I can help it. Won't have to sludge through minimum wage bullshit like I did (esp if the jobs don't exist).
