- A 25 year old who just went back and was in my government class last semester. After talking to her she said she overcame alcoholism and now she's a runner and wants to be an LPN.

I hope they allow her to do that as a former addict, I know some medical licensing and things are really strict when it comes to any past substance abuse because the nurses get access to all kinds of drugs.

Worst case scenario, the girl could easily be a trainer or something. She runs marathons and everything. I'm sure she will make something work out.

Why'd you drop out of law school?

The main reason was that I hated the work. It wasn't anything like I expected. We had to read case law and write non-stop, but almost never had debates or mock trials.

The other was that it would have cost me $80,000 more to finish the last two years. I would have been stuck doing work I hated to pay it off and would have had to deal with too much competition.

That is how I feel about PoliSci right now. Looking ahead at all the courses I need to take for the Bachelors, the course seems more like philosophy rather than politics and it's driving me nuts. If I could read well, that's one thing. I can write and type pages forever and not care, but reading just pisses me off unless I am interested in the topic.

Biology, and I hate it.

I'm locked into a major I hate since my GPA is 1.97 and I need a 3.0 to swap. I'm only in bio because my parents kept pushing doctor doctor doctor on me and I had no interests in anything, so I went with it. Even now I still have no interest in anything. I want to drop out since I am a failure in every class I take, major or elective, but then I'd be living on the streets. Everyone I know has had a miraculous event that gave them a purpose and career goal and they love life, and here I am, a piece of shit who is moments away from being a bum or doing something drastic.

You should consider dropping out and figuring out what you want to do with your life. It's clearly not what your parents are pushing on you, and it would probably be better to get a fresh start at a new university with a new GPA if you end up deciding that your path involves going to college in a different field.

It's time for you to start making your own decisions about the path you are on.

Yes, I did Biochemistry and molecular biology. I actually loved it, it was perfect for me and my style of thinking. When I study I get to the very bare bones foundation then build up, so majoring in that was cool. But I wished I did Physiology because that would've been more helpful to my current occupation. Not to mentio biochem and molecular bio was the toughest major at my university in the college of biosciences, and probably second toughest overall, only behind electrical engineering and computer science.

But its not a big regret, doesnt bother me.

That was the toughest major at your whole university? Wow. I did computer science and economics, but I think that the math and physics people had it harder. I knew some people who did computer science and math and they definitely had a harder time than I did. Chemistry was probably up there too but I didn't really know any of them.

electrical engineering and computer science as a combined major, not CS by itself.

i think the difficulty of a particular major depends on the quality of professors you have as well. every science professor i had was more concerned with making their job easier than actually teaching the material to others.

Yeah definitely. Every math (except 1), physics, and EE class I had to take for my major had abysmal professors.

The Computer Engineering professors were pretty good tho for the most part.

honestly the professor makes no difference if ur an actual good student. the bulk of ur learning should come on ur own. I've noticed this trend. too many average students rely on the professor and dont put enough effort on their own. these guys are the ones that bitch the most about their classes.

I would love to drop out and work while I figure something out. Problem is that I have no backup plan. If I drop out, it's clear I am out of the house. Now, I wouldn't mind living in my car, but then I can't use my desktop computer, no way to shower (heard getting a gym membership would solve that, but monthy or yearly fees are still over my budget, I live by the penny due to paying for school every other semester), and I've heard it could cause issues with getting better jobs.

A fresh start at a new Uni is an option, my dad and I actually went over that last year, but it would be a waste if I don't have any interests in other majors.

But here's the biggest problem. Every summer since I've been in high school I have been mostly sitting around, bored. And every day since I've started college, right after HS, has been me trying to find something. I don't know how to put it, but there just isn't anything for me out there. I feel like I have no other choice but to eat shit and live a miserable life doing stuff I hate. I swear, my cognitive abilities have been declining rapidly ever since HS ended. Just everything I do, I'm a complete mess and a failure, and this, couple with no interests, means no motivation for life.

I know all I'm doing is complaining, but I don't know what else to do. I really wish some sort of divine intervention could just bestow upon me a cure for life's problems. I'm tired of all this stress, not everyone is meant to be happy.

Are you the one who goes to SBU? If so, undergrads are really competitive here and bio is probably the most competitive with all of the premeds.

You need to put in lots of hard work, that's it.

That's what made law school so hard for me. I used SparkNotes to write papers from middle school all the way through undergrad instead of reading the books and always got really good grades. Didn't really work in law because teachers would constantly grill us in class over small details of each case.

Yes, surprised you remember, that was quite some time ago.
Even though I have a large disinterest in bio, which as you said is heavily competitive, I have been using the university resources to succeed, but to no avail. This semester I'm going to try the new PASC tutoring, you've probably heard of it. Still asking questions, doing extra credit, and discussing stuff with other students in class (which is pretty much what BIO203 is all about. Sit down for 2 hours talking about a few questions.)

Good for you. I recommend you also watch lectures from other schools online, MIT may have them for BIO. Also reading the textbook is always very helpful.

I'm not sure how it works in Bio exactly, but in CS all of the TA graders were PhD students, yet very few people ever came to me for help except before an exam. If you need help you should seek out a graduate TA during office hours. There is a good chance that they can help you out since otherwise we twiddle our thumbs in a loud TA room for 1-2 hours doing nothing lol.

But keeping up with readings, and HW, and other lectures, and tutoring is simply work. It's going to take up more than a full time job including your lectures. It really doesn't matter if you have passion, as long as you put in the work.

You aren't a loser. Don't let him get to you. Just because one person says something, that doesn't mean it is true. You have people who say all Muslims are terrorists. Is that true? You have people who say that climate change is a hoax. Is that true? You have people who say being gay is a choice. Is that true?

My point is this. Learn to take the compliments and leave the insults for the children. You are better than that. Brush it off. If you feel so bad about something you failed to do, do it.

I regretted not going to college at all. I enrolled and got an associates degree.
I regretted not transitioning earlier. I am transitioning now and undoing everything I can.
I regretted not getting my license. I finally got it this year. (I put a lot of it off because I live in an area where I can just hit the train for most of my needs and I can't afford a car with all that's going on right now)
I regretted not overcoming my fear of high carnival rides. Now I live for them and want to go on crazy, fun-filled thriller rides!
I regretted not being social and making friends in school. Now I have a lot of them I am on facebook with that I have great memories with since going back to school.
I regretted not getting braces and fixing my very bad teeth so I could smile in pictures. Here I sit with a month under my belt, on the way to a great set of teeth!

I have regretted too much in my life, but I have undone and changed a lot of my errors. I started doing all of the above in 2014. Three years later, I have achieved a lot.

List to me 10 things you wish you could do or wish that you did. If you can't, go with 5. There's got to be a lot. I want to help on an approach.
