And yeah, my first playthrough of the game, I married Abigail. Second playthrough on, I've not had any desire to marry her again. I think I was mostly into her because she felt the least normal (and her hair is awesome), and she also has a great laugh sprite. But yeah, no desire since.

Haley's a marriage candidate I've never married but feel like she's probably next. Definitely a solid arc, especially that she's not just a girl who likes taking photos but artsy and technical about it too.

I feel like, yeah, she probably ranks low on marriage ranking because people are less likely to give her gifts and go through her heart events if they don't want to marry her at first, and she really does herself NO favors early on.

I'm not saying it's absolutely solvable, I'm saying that, on hard difficulty, you are locked into actions because you will straight-up just LOSE if you don't do the exact actions that are needed to stave it off. Easier difficulties, sure, you're allowed to piddle and make more decisions because you won't just straight up lose because the conditions aren't as bad. And sure, luck of the draw is involved in hard difficulty too where theoretically things won't be so hard as to leave you with *some* decision space. And yes, different characters that you play as will theoretically grant you more decision space, though some reduce it because some characters specifically are locked into doing specific roles.

Maybe the newer editions of Pandemic have made fixes that make it have more opportunity for individuality. And sure, some people like playing co-op games that are more like solving a puzzle. Someone said earlier - in those games, everyone needs to be comparable skill level.

My only issue with Maru is that her job is counter to her potential. One of the themes of the game is stagnation of life, as well as shaking things up, and I feel like Maru doesn't get that. Especially if you marry her, she just settles, as Demetrius is afraid she will.

i dont think co-op games are quite as straightforward as you make them out to be, anyway

legacy season 2's brand of pandemic certainly (without spoiling) gives you a thorough enough set of options that optimizing that decision space seems impossible

I mean, not every co-op game is straightforward like that. Ghost Stories is. Pandemic version 1 is.

I'm just trying to point out that, if you're playing a game where you can only win by doing a single predetermined path, it's not a game. It plays itself. Ghost Stories has that issue.

That only happens when there isn't enough choice involved. A game like Arkham Horror has tons of freedom, but is still a great co-op game. A game like Pandemic has less, because there are things you have to do that only you can do. Ghost Stories is 100% like this.

Even Betrayal, with its balance issues, does co-op better because the game doesn't play itself.

I mean, perspective-wise, we're looking at the character from two different angles with our own different backgrounds so I don't expect this discussion to really go anywhere. I do understand where you're coming from now, though!

no where in my write up did I say or even imply that she is immature because of those lines. I said that she is immature. separately, I also mentioned that her persistently hitting on me when I'm married was one of the things she did that bugged me. heck, I even went out of my way to acknowledge that this is at least partially because of the difficulty in coding different character interactions. the reasons I think she is immature are totally unrelated and were partially talked about in Sam's write up.

Yeah, that's why I was confused. Because I didn't see the connection with "immature" as a descriptor, and reading back through Sam's write-up I still don't? I'm not trying to criticize here at all, I just actually didn't follow the thought process.

I'm a bit behind, but I'll throw my bit in and say Ghost Stories is TOO HIGH.

The game is winnable, but you have to do the optimal action. Which is code for: The game plays itself. There's no room to do anything by choice, so it's not even really a co-op game. Players just figure out what the smartest thing to do is, then do it.

20. Dark Souls

First half of this game has amazing level design. Difficulty is super fun, bosses are great, and the lore is just interesting enough to have you look into it. Great game to experience for a first time.

21. Batman: Arkham City

This game came out in 2011, right? Anyway, how do you make a great superhero game with one of the best superheroes ever? You make Arkham Asylum. How do you make a sequel that doesn't feel just like a retread of the same thing? You make Arkham City.

This game has everything from great bit appearances by your favorite villains to playing as Catwoman to visceral responsive combat to wonderful voice acting to fun little side missions. It's really a great piece of work.

TLJ had the line that nobody is ever too far gone.

But it would've been nice to have Rey actually go dark side, which would've made room for Kylo's face turn. Kylo with Han mannerisms was great, but had zero lines.

22. Super Mario Odyssey

Damn but they just keep making 3D Marios so good. How do they do that? Even the one usually considered the worst, Sunshine, is a gem. Great worlds, great mechanics, fun challenges that keep you coming back for more and more.

23. Risk of Rain 2

This has been such a great followup to its predecessor, even though the game is not technically out yet. Still, it's phenomenal, easy to dump hours into, and is a great thing to play while listening to podcasts or stuff. Good difficulty, and feels real good to play. Fun with friends too!

24. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The single biggest absolute triumph of this game was instilling, from the get-go, that childlike sense of wonder. Stepping out and seeing all of Hyrule on the horizon... the little things you find out from the engine as you go, climbing to the top of a huge mountain for the first time... just beautiful. Nothing has made me feel like a kid again like this game.
