MILITARY TIMES - One in four troops sees white nationalism in the ranks

Nearly one in four troops polled say they have seen examples of white nationalism among their fellow service members, and troops rate it as a larger national security threat than Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a new Military Times poll.

This link is nine months old, but when combined with the above link about discharging immigrant recruits...pretty fucked up.

And don't forget Donald pushed for banning transgender people from the military too.

AP - AP NewsBreak: US Army quietly discharging immigrant recruits

The AP was unable to quantify how many men and women who enlisted through the special recruitment program have been booted from the Army, but immigration attorneys say they know of more than 40 who have been discharged or whose status has become questionable, jeopardizing their futures.

It was my dream to serve in the military, said reservist Lucas Calixto, a Brazilian immigrant who filed a lawsuit against the Army last week. Since this country has been so good to me, I thought it was the least I could do to give back to my adopted country and serve in the United States military.

Some of the service members say they were not told why they were being discharged. Others who pressed for answers said the Army informed them theyd been labeled as security risks because they have relatives abroad or because the Defense Department had not completed background checks on them.

Spokespeople for the Pentagon and the Army said that, due to the pending litigation, they were unable to explain the discharges or respond to questions about whether there have been policy changes in any of the military branches.

Eligible recruits are required to have legal status in the U.S., such as a student visa, before enlisting. More than 5,000 immigrants were recruited into the program in 2016, and an estimated 10,000 are currently serving. Most go the Army, but some also go to the other military branches.

To become citizens, the service members need an honorable service designation, which can come after even just a few days at boot camp. But the recently discharged service members have had their basic training delayed, so they cant be naturalized.

I've been bouncing around on here -- I've heard people occasionally ask me if I wanted to join them in doing this over the years and we never did, but now the thought's returned. May as well ask.

Like...what are things to consider just to see how real the interest is?

I've got a degree and have taught various workshops and trainings. I loooooved living in NYC three years so I like the idea of a culture shock again, but I've never left America before.

I've seen this work described as fun, easy, and safe without a need to know another language...and depending on the country, you can save some reasonable money. Is this accurate? Because it souunds too good to be true.

I took their quiz twice...

https://www.internationalteflacademy.com/where-should-you-teach-abroad-quiz

...once with my main picks, once with some second-choice picks. Both times, they recommended I go to Seoul, South Korea...which I never considered before. I went into this with an interest in Karachi, Pakistan. I also would be cool with a Spanish-speaking country so I could learn that better and bring back to America another day.

Apparently China's a good market I can dive into and get my flights paid for...? Never thought about living their before.

Anyway, rambling now -- just looking into new ideas for a day-job while still pursuing theatre at night.

It's one thing if wg just spoke up about over-reacting to the #MeToo movement. There can be an argument for that -- not one I'm crazy about, but sure, there are fair points to be made.

Insulting along the way, however -- men pansy'ing it up and having their dicks retract -- suggests a condescending lack of nuance. I can see why that post got pounced on.

I think wg probably worded his post poorly, and it doesn't help he got more into a defensive mode than clarifying mode after that...but I don't think those accusations against him were what he wanted to insinuate. It's a good lesson to be mindful in the future about how to present a point on a touchy subject.

Also, Tarvauld's Quest is fine and dandy, dunno why I see jabs at his streams here ocasionally.

I mean they will interact with fans just for the sake of it

you don't have to take pictures with them or have anything signed by them

That's the thing, yeah. They'll shake hands, say hi, and listen to ya for a few seconds before moving it along for the next fan who's ready to pay.

Charles was funny to hear encourage upselling. "Tell them if they get pictures with their autograph, it's ten dollars off!" For being the voice of Mario, he was about that money like his name was Tom Nook. Mario was pimpin', and I was something between the bouncer and the bottom bitch.

That's probably part of why I got an extra autograph at the end too. Inbetween asking people if they were general/VIP access and if they had a favorite Mario level (every SM64-fan that brought their cartridge to sign said Bob-Omb Battlefield was their favorite...so weird to see that streak #TeamTallTallMountain), I was filling people in and probably made him a lot of extra $30s.

$40 for three posed pictures with him, $40 for a signed picture, or $70 for both. He was the only celebrity I noticed who offered a combo-discount like that.

Also $50 for a signed giant poster like my SMB3 one or $50 for a line-reading in Mario's voice.

Blew my mind about these prices. I thought after people paid $150-$300 just to get in (I volunteered so I got in free), these autographs and pictures would be free or at least much cheaper. Nope!

There were also the venders all around who who selling items at what I thought were generally-acceptable prices -- two-for-$5 game-themed magnets, two-for-$25 game-themed drinking glasses, $20 stained glass piece, that sort of deal.

If I had to pay $150-$300 just to get in and if I wasn't gifted that second autograph for my time (he was the only celebrity nice enough to offer an autograph for volunteering, by the way), I would feel very different about my experience there.

I'll try to volunteer again, but I'm not paying vacation-prices like that.

EDIT: there were times his line was the longest, but that wasn't to say he was in more demand than the Star Trek cast or Backstreet Boys.

...I mean, there's the slave-angle, but that is NOT going to play well.

So in the PC-world of comedy, are there other angles to poke fun at for being subservient that doesn't offend a protected class?

I volunteered for Fanboy Expo and spent about three hours around the dude.

He also voices Luigi, their baby versions, Wario, and Waluigi. He loves them all, but then he confessed Mario was his favorite to do. I heard so many one-second sound clips I've had etched in my brain throughout my life there. Nice lighthearted guy.

I told him I hope he has a sense of his impact, and his face changed a bit -- it was one of the few moments I noticed he didn't do a voice and he said that meant a lot.

And then I got swag swag swag. Now I'm trying to figure out where I'm gonna hang this giant SMB3 poster he signed.

Listened to the soundtrack a lot and was shown a bootleg performance.

The soundtrack matches the show in a way most musical soundtracks don't, because most musicals have scenes between songs and Hamilton is all musical.

It's your call. If I knew I was about to watch the show, I'd choose going blind, but having listened to it a bunch doesn't diminish me wanting to see it on-stage for myself either.

Main songs in my mind:

Alexander Hamilton
Not Throwing Away My Shot
The rap battles

Favorite songs would probably be those as well as:

NEW YORK TIMES - Inside the White Houses Quiet Campaign to Create a Supreme Court Opening

President Trump singled him out for praise even while attacking other members of the Supreme Court. The White House nominated people close to him to important judicial posts. And members of the Trump family forged personal connections.

[...]

Mr. Trump himself said he wanted to appoint justices who would overrule Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. Justice Kennedy has voted to reaffirm Roes core holding. And Mr. Trump has not hesitated to criticize far more conservative members of the Supreme Court, notably Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.

Justice Roberts turned out to be an absolute disaster, he turned out to be an absolute disaster because he gave us Obamacare, Mr. Trump said in 2016, presumably referring to Chief Justice Robertss votes to sustain President Barack Obamas health care law.

There is reason to think, then, that Mr. Trumps praise of Justice Kennedy was strategic.

Then, after Justice Gorsuchs nomination was announced, a White House official singled out two candidates for the next Supreme Court vacancy: Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and Judge Raymond M. Kethledge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati.

The two judges had something in common: They had both clerked for Justice Kennedy.

[...]

Say hello to your boy, Mr. Trump said. Special guy.

Mr. Trump was apparently referring to Justice Kennedys son, Justin. The younger Mr. Kennedy spent more than a decade at Deutsche Bank, eventually rising to become the banks global head of real estate capital markets, and he worked closely with Mr. Trump when he was a real estate developer, according to two people with knowledge of his role.

During Mr. Kennedys tenure, Deutsche Bank became Mr. Trumps most important lender, dispensing well over $1 billion in loans to him for the renovation and construction of skyscrapers in New York and Chicago at a time other mainstream banks were wary of doing business with him because of his troubled business history.

[...]

There is nothing particularly unusual in urging older justices to retire for partisan reasons. During the Obama administration, prominent liberals called for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to retire so that Mr. Obama could name her successor.

[.,.]

His departure is a triumph for Mr. Trump, who has taken particular satisfaction in his judicial appointments. Naming justices and judges is easier than forging legislative compromises, and Mr. Trump understands that his judicial appointments represent a legacy that will long outlast his presidency.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/06/28/us/politics/trump-anthony-kennedy-retirement.html

Donald had a billion dollar loan from Justice Kenmedy's son, huh. Seems to be worth following.

And did Grand Poo Bear throw his controller or just drop it? He said dropped it, but he was clearly mad and I missed the moment it happened.

Midterms don't determine who will choose the next Justice.

I don't disagree with Shumer -- get mad and call them out -- but the point that's being made will ring a little hollow in 2019 in their best-case scenario of blocking through this election.

Or is their best-case scenario holding off until 2020...? Because I dunno if I want that either (in an ideal world where people play fair, which lol but the point stands).
