That's not surprising. The MGS theme literally only plays in the game during the credit sequence on like the third playthrough (and only if you alternate endings, I think)

Other than that, it was only ever featured in trailers for MGS. The first time I heard it was also VR missions intro (which funny enough, was just it's trailer I think) and I had been playing MGS1 since release.

Seems like a poor choice for a main theme.

An interesting note about the game, some things were cut because of 9/11.

One of the Sons of Liberty, I think Vamp, explicitly talks about using a purified bomb as an EMP over Wall Street to destroy The Patriots

There was an explicit scene were Arsenal Gear crashes into New York and stops right by Federal Hall. In the actual game its not that clear how Raiden and Solidus end up there.

The flagpoles around Federal Hall originally had American flags on them. After the final fight Raiden cuts one down and drapes it around Solidus.

Huh. 9/11 has had quite the impact on games.

Why the hell does Raiden just act like Rose didn't just treat him like a pawn and a weapon or reveal that she's been lying to him for the entire time he's known her?

Well, Liquid's a completely unresolved issue. Kind of a downer, it lessens the impact of the fantastic opening.

Anyway, thoughts about the game.

The tanker is the best part of the game, hands-down. It's paced absolutely perfectly, has one of the best setpieces in the series (that I've played), and has the best hook in the series (that I've played). While the Big Shell has its moments, it's overall too heavy on backtracking, even for MGS1 standards, and there are some things that are communicated extremely poorly, such as the fact that the player can hug the walls on the bridge that collapses to not fall. Being caught may as well be a game over due to how tough the attack group can be. The fact that most ledges are insta-kill if you barely move the tiniest bit off of them and that Raiden likes to swing around combined with the tight spaces you sometimes have to navigate through can get extremely frustrating. I absolutely loved the story, though I don't think it's above MGS3.

It sure is awfully convenient that the bridge, which would have been impossible to cross before and made the entire endeavor pointless, is magically repaired.

OP, once you finish the game I highly recommend watching Superbunnyhop's critical close up of MGS2. It is perhaps the best analysis of a video game I've ever seen.

Oh, so you have to grab him, but not if he's asleep, and then not only drag him over to the scanner, but make him face it? This might not be so bad if shooting didn't suck and accidentally walking into the enemy automatically fails you, but this is some bullshit as it stands.

Got caught by... I don't know. I just walked into a guard's field of view (with an AK and the BDU on, mind you,) and a failure cutscene played.

This is still pretty good tension, though, gotta admit.
