Redskin is a reference to bloody scalps left behind in government-sanctioned acts of genocide. The name change is long, long overdue. Washington Redskins should've never been a thing in my lifetime. You ever see photographs of fried chicken restaurants with racist names / racist mascots? The Redskins brand name should've gone out with that.

It's weird how little respect Captain Marvel/Shazam gets. When given a chance, he's been consistently better than Superman. His comics were more popular than Superman's. His film serial was better than Superman's. His one and only live action movie has been better than any live action Superman movie. (In my opinion, anyway.)

It's like having a boxer who's better than Muhammad Ali, but never gets talked about.

It's pretty grounded, but the post-credits sequence hooks the fact that the other Avengers exist. Some of which are supernatural. Going by that monsters comparison I used earlier, this would be like a Phantom of the Opera movie which ends with a cameo from the vampire-hunter from Dracula. If a vampire-hunter exists, so must a vampire.

And Iron Man is still a bit more far-fetched than what Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were. We have a flying man in a suit of armor. By comparison, that makes Batman's echo-location bat-summoner thing look like something that could actually exist.

John Wayne was a bigot. I don't think he saw himself as one.

In the context of the rant, he was taking a dig at Angela Davis before making a sweeping generalization of black people. He then backpedaled a bit by commenting on two black teens at his high school who were among the smartest in the school and how anybody can get a fair break.

To my knowledge, he never formally apologized for the remarks. He did make mia culpas though by casting black actors in movies he produced and having his characters speak lines of dialogue such as, "Mister, I don't have a bigoted bone in my body."

The remarks defined him going forward in life. Blaxploitation films would often have a portrait of John Wayne hanging in the home or office of the bigoted police officer bad guy. (Most notably found in Black Caesar starring Fred Williamson.)

He was a bigot. I don't think he saw himself as one. He saw homosexuality as disgusting. He was friends with Rock Hudson. He generalized black people in an interview, he cast black people in his movies since the 1950s and was friends with Sammy Davis Jr. and I believe Woody Strode. He acted as if Democrats and liberals were communists out to get the US, but got along swimmingly with Katherine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, and Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

Oh, and bigoted John Wayne shut down production of The Searchers to have a Native American girl flown out to a hospital and again shut down production so that a Native American woman could attend her daughter's marriage. (That son of a bitch.)

I think he was more complex than just being a one-note bigot to be written off in a single stroke. But, at the same time, I can't blame people who feel that way about him. It's a pretty damning statement. Though I'm sure if he were a Democrat, we'd be getting a bunch of "What he really meant statements..." from the same people calling for his removal.

Recasting has been a thing since the stage. It goes back further than cinema itself. Yes, Superman is going to look a little different. Yet, Batman is going to look a little different. At least in the case of Batman, they could say that Bruce Wayne threw his money around and got cosmetic surgery.

I would still suggest doing Superman 3 (counting BvS as #2), giving Wonder Woman a third movie of her own, possibly one for Harley Quinn, and then doing a big damn Justice League sendoff in which they fight and defeat Darkseid and save the world forever.

Then would be the proper time to hit the reset button. Or they could split Justice League into parts 2 and 3. Darkseid wins the first round, loses the second.

It would still make money. The people saying to reboot now, I have my doubts if they would be there for reboot movies. Maybe they'd be happy to get a new Batman that was more their liking, but I think the rest would be left to flounder.

DC/Warner deserves its own MCU. And Disney needs to know they don't own Hollywood lock, stock, and barrel.

Spider-man has been rebooted twice within 10 years heh.

And I haven't seen those movies. I saw the first movie and the first reboot in theaters. I wasn't ready to go see the second reboot. I was ready to see Sinister Six, a proper Venom movie, Black Cat, Carnage, anything that referenced the previous anythings that happened so far.

They tell me it's great. I don't really care. I'm not interested in Spider-Man 1 Version 3.0. But if Sam Raimi does get to do his Spider-Man 4 with Sony, I'll buy a ticket opening weekend.

But even disregarding that, Spider-Man is a stand alone series. (Or rather was.) It wasn't tied in to Silver Surfer, the Punisher, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four. If it had been, and if they'd been building up to bigger and better things, it would be a shame to lose that no matter how bad some of the entries were.

Why does there need to be an arbitrary time limit? If it's not working they shouldn't feel obligated to continue losing money. And if they just take it out behind the shed they should be able to try again asap as long as they want to put in effort. If they want to just keep fucking around the canon doesn't really matter either way.

The faster you are to hit the reset button, the less audiences trust you. I wouldn't want to see next year's Batman movie if it was the first film in a DCCU reboot.

It burns the people who have spent their money in the hopes that the franchise will improve. If you end the franchise after Wonder Woman 2, you can be counted upon to lose 40% to 60% of the people who have watched every DCCU film. And that's a lot of faith to put in people that new audiences will trust and you and will make up for the audience members that you've lost.

This is exactly what killed Sega. They made no attempt to salvage the Sega Saturn and instead hoped people would buy the Sega Dreamcast. People didn't want to be treated like Guinea pigs.

If you reboot now, you tell me that you will pocket my money and run away with my investment at the first sign of trouble.

My first impression was that that should've been an option, but it's honestly too soon to reboot. The franchise is only 8 years old. They need to at least make it to 10 to 12 years before rebooting.

Otherwise, there's no reason to believe the next version will stick. They just have to limp along in spite of the fans they've lost along the way.

Did we forget how the MCU got its start?

With Iron Man. Now it may be hard to go back and look at that movie in a vacuum but it also released in 2008 the same year as The Dark Knight. And we all looked at Iron Man as a very grounded, realistic depiction of a Super Hero. Thats kind of what made the MCU so exciting was that it felt like, for some degree anyway, it wasnt a completely out to lunch Superhero film. It felt real in a lot of ways.

So then it became super interesting with questions of How are they going to do Thor? Or hell Doctor Strange. So far theres been no express magic shown. And even Dr Strange introduced magic in a way that felt true to the series.

Now I think weve gotten to the point in the MCU where theres nothing they cant do and audiences really dont care.

But anyway my point is they could have easily done the same thing branching off from Nolans Batman.

Batman could've easily had the Riddler or the Penguin as his first opponent. In choosing a centuries old demon as their first antagonist and revealing that he's actually a hoax, they made deliberate point that this Batman existed in a world without science fiction elements or the supernatural. The Dark Knight Rises feels a little out of place when compared with the first film of the trilogy. The whole "raise the temperature" notion doesn't work when the series begins with a declaration that it's super-grounded.

If the issue is that he's stereotyping black people, that's a problem. If it's that he does critical narration on behalf of a character, I don't see that as a valid complaint.

There's an NBA game on. One of the players (who is black) just missed a free throw and is staring dumbfounded into space. I'm watching as a fan, with a group of people, and I make fun of him saying, "Aww, gee, guys. I'm really sorry I missed. That was really bad on my part." Does that count as audio blackface on my end?

That's what Nostalgia Critic's doing. He's not voicing a character. He's piping in additional dialogue in a snarky manner.

Disney shouldn't have a monopoly. Warner Bros. and Universal Studios need to get their acts together. I'm starting to think Disney secretly pays the screenwriters to make bad scripts. They seem to have a monopoly on good stories. Maybe they're the only ones who think screenwriters deserve to be paid?

In any event, a good story is the heart of every good movie. A bad director can take a good script and produce and okay movie. A good director can do absolutely nothing with a bad story.

Besides, even if Nostalgia Critic wanted to let a black cast member do the "black guy voice," it wouldn't make sense. It's meant to represent the thoughts in his own head.

Either Nostalgia Critic does a bad Shaquille O'Neal impression or Malcolm plays the voice inside Nostalgia Critic's head. Because it's not voicing Shaq, it's voicing how Shaq sounds to Nostalgia Critic. And it's not a race thing. It's a Shaq being a bad actor in a lifeless, poorly written movie.

Either way, it's still a member of one ethnicity voicing another.

The last time I had a bad dream, I spent all day at a theme park without getting to ride a single ride. Frustrated, I decided "It's time to fly" and proceeded to strip naked. I flew naked over the crowds of theme park goers and even flew over a nearby football stadium.

If you are making fun of the way that somebody talks, yeah, that's pretty bad.

I understand Apu getting canceled because it is a White guy doing a bad impression of an Indian accent. For what it's worth, the accent was done without ill intent. Cartoons are often exaggerated for humorous purposes. If the Simpsons saw a reboot, I would hope to see Apu return, voiced by a man of Indian descent, and still as disconnected from reality as the Yellow/White cast members.

I understand complaining when actors lose roles because a white guy is playing a character of another ethnicity, but it's pretty silly to retroactively treat animation like blackface.

I hate moral objectivism being retroactively applied to social standards. It's not objectively wrong for someone to pretend to be someone they're not in an acting environment. We've simply reevaluated our social standards to be more inclusive. It's not meant to give license to people to go out and try to ruin people's careers. This would be like going after 80s cartoon shows where the girls wear pink and claiming that the people who made them encouraged damaging sexist social standards.

If you're looking for an excuse to hurt people, you're as bad as your standard bigot. It doesn't matter what pretense you use.

animation =/= live action

Voicing a character is not the same as playing a character in live action. It's the act of putting on makeup to mock someone's ethnicity which is demeaning, not having somebody pretend to be something they're not. That's called acting.

Nolan Batman exists in a world where the supernatural doesn't exist and science fiction elements are kept to a minimum. It wouldn't have worked.

It'd be like having a series of Scooby Doo movies where the monsters are all people in costume -- then suddenly doing a shared universe with Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein's Monster.
