I would love to see a sequel with teens if Afterlife does great at the box office, it worked in Extreme Ghostbusters so it should work for live action.

I never watched Extreme Ghostbusters, but I'd like to see this just to prove that the failure of Ghostbusters '16 came about because it was a reboot instead of a sequel. ("See? This is how you transition into a new team of Ghostbusters.")

Gozer's not bad, but he/she shouldn't be the only adversary. The cartoon show had a plethora of baddies.

It just seems like a waste to have the Ghostbusters bust Gozer the Gozerian, Vigo the Carpathian, and Gozer the Gozerian yet again. Even if the villain is Gozer in everything but name, I'd rather have them battle Gozer's brother Gorza than to battle Gozer yet again.

But, hey, if they're gonna fight Gozer yet again, at least it's still Ghostbusters. The real Ghostbusters I mean.

Was this topic made in response to anything in particular? >_>

I'm rewatching a 1978 kung fu movie called Lady Constables. It was meant as a star vehicle for Judy Lee and Angela Mao.

The film has some artistic touches to it and some good interactions between the three protagonists -- the third hero being a silent male bodyguard. But the movie is brought down slightly by the fact that none of the three heroes take any offense until the final fight. It really makes me wonder where in the story that could've been remedied. I definitely think the bad guy's second-in-command should've gotten offense. But that fight is so late in the film that it would not have have piqued the viewer's interest if they had grown bored with how untouchable the three heroes are.

Bruce Lee had a formula going in that his characters were often prevented from fighting back when pushed or struck (The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon). Once allowed to fight back, he'd clear those same antagonists unscathed. By film's end, he'd have an opponent who could give him a challenge. It allowed a good fight at the end, it kept him from being too untouchable through the film, and it still highlighted his proficiency throughout. All in all, a win/win scenario.

In my opinion, Steven Seagal is a very dull protagonist. He sleepwalks through fight scenes, effortlessly blocking strikes and breaking limbs, with a cocky smirk on his face. Would the Bruce Lee formula have helped him? Would his movie have been better if one guy pointed a gun at him while another punched him in the stomach only for him to disarm and defeat both of them moments later? Or would that smug Mona Lisa smile of his still have gotten in the way of things? What if fights against fellow martial artists remained 80% in his favor, but that smirk had been replaced by a look of determination or even concern?

Action that has characters that don't struggle is often not very interesting

I agree. But it still makes for an interesting situation in trying to correct a movie which doesn't have enough of a struggle.

Struggle usually has to do with framing. A western or a war movie can potentially have the protagonist emerge unscathed, but still create tension because of the looming danger of being gunned down (or blown up). When it comes specifically to a scenario where the film lacks excitement because of a lack of competition, such as in a bad martial arts movie, it becomes a challenge to say when and where the issue could've been resolved.

It's impossible to demonstrate proficiency if every contest is a struggle. But if a character succeeds without a struggle, the film can become boring. It can be tricky to pin down where the balance should lie.

It's a unique criticism. For starters, it's indirect. It can mean "I was bored with the lack of competition" or "I was annoyed with the ego(s)."

Second, it's odd in terms of how vague a hypothetical solution is. Suppose the hero is "too untouchable" in the sense that she is unchallenged in three out of four fights and only endures offense in the final contest. Would the film have been that much improved if she'd caught a stray kick in the second fight? Or maybe our hero got 80% of the offense in his fight with his nearest rival. Is there a cutoff point for a minimum acceptable amount of offense for the bad guy? And if so, is it measured in number of moves or in percentage of the offense? Is there any such thing as a film in which a hero was one strike away from being in a good movie?

It's one thing to look at a movie and say, "That was boring. He was untouchable." It's another to trace back to where the film first started to lose your interest and offer criticism on where they could've corrected that mistake.

I read an article stating (likely overstating) that the play Hamilton has shaped millennials' opinions of the Thomas Jefferson by casting him as an aloof hypocrite. I wonder how easily a historical revaluation could be done.

Like, say there was a Back to the Future / Hot Tub Time Machine style film with Abraham Lincoln as a supporting character. At one point, a supporting character (Black guy) is captured by some bad guys (Vikings?) and this exchange follows:

lead character: "You risked everything to free those who were enslaved and fight for equality. Will you help us now to rescue our friend?"
Abraham Lincoln: (in a cowardly and frantic tone of voice) "You think I care about HIM? It was a Military Strategy against the SOUTH! I don't care about people like your friend Tom. Let me out of here!"

I bet a ton of people would see that and think, "Wow, Lincoln was a dick."

Velociraptors are confirmed birds. A remake could have 3' tall velociraptors covered in feathers and a 6' tall deinonychus without. They could also throw in an archaeopteryx for further feathered dinosaur inclusion.

Once you show that factually some dinosaurs did have feathers, it becomes rather inconsequential which dinosaurs have them and which don't. The evolution factor is still present. Did tyrannosaurus have feathers? It probably developed feathers as it gradually evolved into a smaller lifeform. I don't believe that tyrannosaurus in its heyday had feathers. It had the same on/off switch in its brain for temperature regulation which an alligator has. Its skull has the same cavity for it.

In a movie that's more action than science, I don't feel the need to deliberately sabotage the tyrannosaurus's cool factor just to rub it in the face of anti-evolution types. There are priorities and Jurassic Park is first and foremost a popcorn flick. If you want scientifically accurate dinosaurs, we have the Discovery Channel for that.

One might as well complain that turtles don't actually know martial arts or that hedgehogs aren't the fastest creatures alive.

The worst thing about the world movies for my money though is that they didnt use this reboot of the franchise to also reboot the public perception of Dinosaurs.

jurassic park had an unparalleled effect on public interest for dinosaurs. As a kid this movie shaped how we thought for our entire lives. It pushed people into careers.

Now that the science is telling us dinosaurs had feathers it would have been awesome to see a more realistic depiction on screen.

But no they didnt want to alarm anyone...

Feathered dinosaurs are literally the reason they didn't reboot the series.

Hollywood would have to do something else to mess it up.

Like, Samus is a biracial lesbian with a lengthy show-stealing subplot about her girlfriend back home. Or Metroids were created by religious fanatics to wipe out evolving lifeforms because evolution doesn't coincide with their teachings. Or maybe Mother Brain is literally Samus's mother who was mutated into a giant one-eyed brain creature.... by the religious fantatics who created the Metroids to prevent evolution.

It's the classic argument. Which makes for a better film: the presence of the good or the absence of the bad?

Alien has the iconic chest-bursting scene and virtually no flaws whatsoever. Aliens has a better story, with an Oscar nominated foster relationship between Ripley and Newt, and the most badass thing to come out of the franchise: the Alien Queen. On the other hand, it also has Burke -- a poorly written cowardly scheming money-grubbing executive. Literally the first thing he says is "don't hold that against me" in regards to his position as a company man and then he goes on to be a complete caricature in every scene.

I'm still kinda leaning in favor of Aliens, but it's hard to vote against Alien when they did everything right and Aliens has that one tiny blemish.
