There should be a law preventing me from driving to Detroit and patrolling the worst neighborhoods while carrying a rifle until someone tries to kill me resulting in me being allowed to kill them.

Because apparently I could just go do that if I wanted and as often as I wanted until I ended up the one dead in the exchange.

Edit: And I'm not saying shooting someone was the point of his visit (although even if it were you could never prove intent so it's still legal), but the upside is that an already damaged used car dealership is protected and the tradeoff is putting yourself in a position with a rifle that you could reasonably expect to be forced to use.

That was what stuck with me the most from the trailer so I'm expecting to feel this way too when I can set aside the time to watch the live action.

Look, here's the thing. I don't like Rittenhouse as a person. But if you can one or two things and instead of a white kid he was a black kid and he was there protecting a business and someone threatened to kill him and he shot the same white person I'd want that kid to walk too based off the law.

There may be some laws you can draft so what he did is not completely legal. I can entertain that, and fair enough, but a lot of people are missing the mark that we would have to wildly re-arrange how laws work and in a very bad way to this kid to be guilty of anything serious.

I am going to try to avoid a lot of news on this though, as I am sure the right wing grift machine is going to have a fucking field day with this.

Again, based upon the current laws I absolutely agree with the verdict. There could be no other verdict based upon the situation as it unfolded.

But someone crossing state lines to play Rambo for the purpose of protecting a used car dealership is a large part of what caused this specific situation to unfold.

I feel perfectly justified in agreeing that the law was followed while personally believing that there should be laws changed to prevent this kind of overt vigilantism from happening with such impunity.

I think there are very few actors, particularly child actors, capable of pulling off Ed.

Personally I have been making an effort to not re-watch the anime in recent months so I can absorb the live action a bit further removed from my fondness for the anime which I've seen numerous times.

I mean if someone threatens to murder you if they get you alone and then they get you alone and are aggressive...!

If the context that leads to this situation is me taking a rifle and open carrying it through a neighborhood that is experiencing violent civil unrest until this situation arises? Yes I stand by my take.

I know the law currently does not care which is why the result was objectively the correct one given the circumstances as they exist. But for me personally context matters.

That is the objectively correct result based upon the system and laws as they currently exist.

This also continues to be true:

It's nice to know that if you want to kill people you can still just illegally put yourself in bad positions until the opportunity arises.

Many of your cheered storming police stations and literally burning them down.

And as history has taught us two wrongs equal...?

But even taking that aside, "many" is a strong word.

Maybe some receipts on that?
And then maybe directing that to specifically the people who "cheered storming police stations" if those are in fact the same people who are saying that storming the capitol deserves to be harshly punished.

Otherwise I don't see why I, someone who has never said I wanted police stations stormed or burned down, should be included in the "many" of us who have apparently cheered on such behavior.

Every single person who went to all the protests and speeches at the Capitol that day were intending to break in and literally overthrow the US government?

If you want to believe every one one of those people should be in prison or whatever, thats fine, I disagree, for reasons of how easy that could be flipped around and used against my people. We can agree to disagree.

Big difference between being on the street when a protest turns violent and being inside the literal capitol building.

One is a public place.

The other is the place where the government literally functions and clearly no one is supposed to go unless authorized.

But yeah, otherwise those two scenarios are exactly the same. /s

People have already commented. Further explanations that the prosecution failed (and probably never had a case to begin with) aren't going to change those comments, and you're in the wrong place if you want people to sympathize with someone who blatantly put themselves in a position so they could kill someone, and did in fact kill someone.

This. Or as I phrased it last week:

Forceful_Dragon posted...

Because it will take next to no effort to justify self defense in any manner of circumstances.

So we can agree that the law allows for this type of situation to occur and I can still consider this to be a tragedy that should not have occurred.

Nothing wrong with the police, guys, they're just *checks notes* consistently and systematically removing all "good apples" from their ranks by firing them, jailing them, or forcing them into psychiatric institutions.

If they remove all the best apples then the worst apples will look less bad by relative comparison to their fellow officers.

That's some 5D chess right there.

We are forever trapped because gas prices are literally the GOP boogeyman. People having more money in pocket means more travel demand which means the economy is going well and people have money to spend and jobs to get to.

Also because people are fucking morons.

lol and we get that double in california because republicans are saying "california democrats want to charge you per mile now too!"

And they (republicans) are eating that crap up.

They don't any of them realize that the current (very early test phase pilot program) to rollout a per mile tax on vehicle usage would be instead of the tax on gas if it makes it to full adoption and not in addition to them. And that this will actually BENEFIT people who drive more if it's set correctly because currently their gas fees aren't in the best place because they are subsidizing drivers with hybrid and electric cars who are causing just as much wear on the roads without the corresponding fee for road maintenance.

But why bother to learn any of that when you can just be ignorantly upset instead.

I'd rather have a muppet saying something that supports the information provided by scientists and medical professionals as opposed to "news" sources that cast doubt on science and spread fear and misinformation about the same thing.

One of them is saving lives.

The other is actually causing more people to die.

Ignoring the fact that he will be charged for illegally being in said bad position with his illegal weapons, he didn't force those people to try and attack him. And given the details that have come out about Huber (and the numerous clear as daylight videos of the shooting), it's basically impossible to get a murder conviction unless the jury is just absolutely stacked with idiots

Did I say say anything about murder? I don't believe I did.

I said if you want to KILL someone it seems there are plenty of ways to engender situations to make sure you are technically within the bounds of the law when you do.

It's an indictment of both the legal system and the way our country glorifies gun violence for "protection" that allows these situations to keep occurring.

The fact that he seems to have had a foot on the "right" side of the law isn't the point.

Being somewhere you are not supposed to be doesn't mean you can't defend yourself.

And while I agree with this, there has to be a point where you can't have the clear intent to create the situation for yourself.

It's like the guy who called 911 because his neighbor's house was being robbed. 911 told him to sit tight, they would dispatch someone, he said he had a gun and could go deal with it, they told him four times to just stay home and not engage. He goes over there and kills the burglar and is in the clear because of stand your ground laws. He wasn't even standing on his *own* ground.

And no, the situations aren't exactly the same. And yes, so far it sounds like *in the moment* there was a clear danger to Rittenhouse.

But at a point you have to say that context matters.

I did not care for it. I kept my expectations low and just tried to enjoy what it had to offer. But even so the pacing and dialogue and exposition just felt clumsy and unpolished. The character moments (such as they were) just largely fell flat. I came out of it wondering if I should be blaming the writer or the director for the bad pacing only to find out it was the same person.

I really wanted it to be better.

Everything with Kumail Nanjiani was fantastic, though. (except of course his bizarre absence from the climax of the movie)

Trailer was fantastic.

Is it going to be an episode for episode reenactment?

I saw bits from Asteroid Blues, Ballad, Gateway Shuffle, Pierrot Le Fou, etc. I'm not sure I mind but I wasn't sure if it was strictly a recreation.

Also some of the fighting seems a bit... ponderous? Particular the where Faye is gonna knife Spike, it just seems to be a bit slowly paced. I hope the choreography won't leave something to be desired. It was one of the best things about the anime behind music.

I'm all for unions having a seat at the table and the overall power of collective bargaining.

But for something like a life-saving vaccine mandate the entire process should be:

Company: So we're doing this vaccine thing now.
Union: Yup.

By all means unions can negotiate for fair wages/hours/etc, but this doesn't need to be something to negotiate over.
