Castaway: I didn't think I liked this type of dubstep sound, but that is an addictive beat here. I could see myself loving this song after a few more listens.

Shine: I dig their voices and the lyrics about embracing your darkness are definitely the type of thing I love, so this was an unexpected treat.

Why You Wanna Break My Heart?: My nostalgia pick. The first four nominations were easy selections: My top three songs of 2023 and then a wildcard option that I just wanted to show off & was determined to nominate the first time it was eligible anywhere because my bizarre love/hate relationship with it might produce some interesting rankings. For the fifth slot, I just asked myself "what song do I have a lot of nostalgia for, but haven't listened to so often that I've become sick of it--and ideally haven't heard it at all in a couple years?" & this track is the one that came to mind. I feel it's a slot that could be a radically different song depending on what day you asked. tazzy got "Winger - Battle Stations" when I asked the same question for his ranking. ...Not that it matters, just a quick illustration of how this nomination slot could have wound up on basically anything. Aaaanywho, back to the song that actually was nominated. It's a simple song, a bit too basic and repetitive to be something that I'd love if I were just discovering it for the first time these days, but there's a lot of nostalgia attached that makes me kinda love it still. My mother never listened to much music, so I really didn't either growing up... but for reasons I cannot even begin to fathom, we borrowed the Wayne's World soundtrack from the library and spent quite a bit of time to listening to it. It's odd; of all the albums in the universe, why would this have been the one we went with? It's not as though this was a thing we did, I can only name two albums we ever borrowed to listen to in this way (I'll refrain from discussing the second for personal reasons & because I'm spending way too much time talking about my own life here as it is), but... well, we did, and it's given me a lasting attachment to Tia Carerre. Also for a very specific era of Alice Cooper--"Feed My Frankenstein" may not be his biggest hit, but I love it and the entire album it came from because that's *my* Alice... but I suppose that's a story for another topic.

Name Entry was just something that was stuck in my head for a few days. I had low expectations, but I figured 40 seconds of an odd voice sample would likely play better for you than GBA Care Bears music. Also, since Care Quest's title theme is an unlicensed cover of the Care Bears Countdown intro, I can't be 100% certain that the Credits theme isn't directly based on an existing song and didn't feel right nominating it here. I think it's an original song, but there's no way to be sure.

So, yeah, just a song I thought was neat. Also, it was at least on YouTube, unlike some other songs I was considering which helped.

Fair enough. Then I have nothing to really contribute here; I'll try to support whatever the new format is for a while, though I may take little breaks as I don't usually listen to albums... going from listening to less than one album per year to one every week for years has certainly been an experience and I'm incredibly thankful for it, but I think I may be getting a bit burnt out & it'll be healthier if I stop clinging to my perfect attendance and skip some here & there.

I won't take it personally if you make the changes immediately and skip Dawn FM as a result. The cycle works better for me personally, but I think everyone else has wanted a change for a while now, so I think the writing's been on the wall for a while; you want to change, the majority of voters seem to want to change, and I used Dawn FM as a popular compromise instead of something I was super passionate about (though I do really enjoy it) so...I understand and accept it being cut to get to the new rules quicker.

Ah. I think I just wound up with the Steam Discussion board for the information I needed; never thought about the Discord, though I suppose that one's on me.

I loved and hated Void Stranger. I rage quit a lot, but I always came back to it and felt it was worth the effort... though I did wind up spoiling way too much, as there's no way to look up an answer to certain things without getting more information than you want. Wouldn't recommend the game to anyone because it's so frustrating, but I did love it. Mostly.

I think "Forward to the Past" might have the quietest screamed vocals I've ever heard. Not a complaint--it's an interesting technique--just... unexpected.

Implications are fine. I really have no interest in arguing over what is or isn't a theme, so there aren't any traps. If it's performed by a character, about a character, or represents a character in some way then it's fine. Also, I approved the Too Cool theme, so teams/groups/organizations also work?

As long as there's some connection, no matter how tenuous, to a character than we're cool.

Oh right, I have a question. I tend to nominate a lot of musical theater songs, sung by characters. But they're not always necessarily about the character that sung it (i.e. their character theme). Would you like me to label those as well?

Also, would you prefer the songs and artists in uppercase?

I was going to label everything, but I'm not sure there's a reason to; I thought I'd be likely to talk about each character at least briefly, but I'm getting the feeling my focus on music makes that both unlikely & impractical. So... probably not, I suppose? Unless you want to. You certainly can label such songs with the subject's name or any of the performers', but I don't think the data will likely be used for anything. So as long as one nomination is marked to fill the slot requirement it's fine either way.

And... well in retrospect, standard capitalization probably makes more sense. The intent was CAPS LOCK because I thought that would look better when posting song eliminations... but the spreadsheet would be unreadable in all caps & it's actually really nice being able to just copy/paste info directly to the sheet instead of having to retype everything. So asking for all caps was not the wisest decision... so, let's just say it's fine either way? Normal formatting would be easier--especially with longer titles--but I did ask for all caps, so I certainly won't complain about people following directions. Or to put it another way: "...Yes, but it'd be easier on us both if you saved me from my idiocy by not doing so. <./<"

Don't be hard on yourself, it's a really weird request for me to have made & I probably wouldn't have said anything--I'd have to listen to all the songs to confirm that none of them were a character theme that just wasn't labeled... and by that point it'd be less work to just rank them. Also, azuarc was nice enough to nominate extra character themes, so I could make an argument that one of his picks would functionally fill the slot of someone who skipped the character requirement.

That being said, it was very nice of you to notice & fix things yourself, so thank you!

Ah, my wildcard song. I really thought that one would be my highest scoring. Anyway, I love the way the song opens--it's so deep and beautiful that it's absolutely one of my favorite songs ever... and then it kinda transitions into a more standard pop song which is nice enough. The only real problem is the song refusing to end! It gets to a natural stopping point, kinda fades a bit, and then resumes in full. It doesn't do anything different with the second half, it just... forgets to stop? It makes it so I have no idea what score I want to give the song; I still like it, but I have no idea why it's so arbitrarily extended.

(This is a problem with every song on the album... none of them seem to know when to end.)

I forgot to mention that, as always, any song link that will play on my phone is valid. So you can use YouTube, but also Spotify, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or whatever. I'm really not picky when it comes to links.

Now, see, I love depressing songs--just take a look at Mega Mana's song ranking and see how often I praise sad lyrics because I can't shut up about them even at other people's topics. The way you speak of this album, it feels like something I should love... but it didn't work for me either. At no point did I feel any sadness or depression from anything. I wouldn't call them happy songs, but as someone who loves sadness and angsty teen music, I never felt like I got any of that from this album.

To be fair, I find the album more mid-tier and forgettable than something I actively dislike, but it's weird how this is somehow too depressing for some people & not nearly depressing enough for me.

In lieu of a writeup, I will quote a comment on the video that I find very fitting: Grandpa just learned what samples are and hes gonna use them all! I mean, I love weird samples in music, but these samples arent doing the song any favors, especially coupled with a pretty bland backing track. Mission accomplished, Fox! (I think?)

Okay, since this topic is popping up rather suddenly and I want to give people a chance to notice it, we'll be starting with a rather modest number of nominations: 4 typical wildcard nominations that you can do anything with & 1 special nomination that should be used on the theme song of a specific character. Why? Because I want a few character themes. You may, of course, use your regular nominations on more character themes if you wish--that is neither encouraged nor discouraged.

...That being said, I want 300 songs and it'd take 60 people nominating a full set of songs to reach that goal and that's not likely to happen. So every Saturday, starting on March 2nd, everyone will gain an additional 5 standard nominations! Just use your own timezone or any timezone you want to determine when it's Saturday, I'm not the time police. Not yet, anyway.

As always, anything that could charitably be considered a song is fair game for nominations. Commercially released songs, covers, remixes, mashups, jingles, themes, VGMs, parodies, AI content, whatever. I ask that you limit yourself to only one long song, with long being defined as anything over ten minutes long. And nothing over twenty-five minutes. Honestly, if you *really* have your heart set on two long songs, we can talk about it--it's not exactly a hard limit, but at least ask first?

I'm probably going to be rather lenient when it comes to defining what a character theme is. Songs that are literally character themes are preferred, but I'd say any original song performed by a fictional character is fair game; so songs from The Chipmunk Adventure soundtrack would be fair game (original music created for the fictional characters to sing), but covers of hit songs wouldn't.

Yes, wrestlers count as characters, so wrestler themes work. Yes, I'll count vtubers as fictional enough so long as they're performing an original song. I'm really not interested in trying to police this category too strongly.

Combining songs into a single nomination slot is okay, just only do it when you legitimately believe it's the way the songs need to be heard? Like... don't exploit this to get extra songs in, but obviously there are some songs that seamlessly transition into each other that should be treated as one track. I'm leaving this entirely to your judgement.

0.01~09.99: I hate these songs strongly enough I'm considering not thanking you for the nomination.
00.00: I... don't think I give scores this low even as jokes anymore, so congratulations on completely breaking me if you pull this off.

Any song with the exact same score is considered to be tied, except at the 100 point category which is not tied unless otherwise stated. Raetsel Raetsel Incorporated reserves the right to have any number of songs tie at any position of the rankings,, including ties for first & last place. Let's say *certain aspects* of me still regret not doing the five way tie for first place last topic and I may very well do something like that this time. I also may not. I don't know what you'll nominate or how I'll react to it, I'm just keeping all options on the table.

And we're back! Been a while, hasn't it? The nominations for the last full ranking ended January 2022. And while there was a lengthy post ranking for extra songs, it's been over two years since anyone had a chance to nominate a song for a detailed ranking from me. And I really want to work on a large project of some kind... so here we go again, with me (hopefully) diving into a rather large number of songs selected by you, the Board 8 Universe. And anyone else I manage to drag here from other boards.

Alas, I am no longer able to do overwhelmingly massive ranking topics, so we're going back to basics with a more modest amount of 300 songs. This is still a LOT of songs, but it's an amount I feel comfortable with. Well, reasonably comfortable at least--I haven't quite been myself the past few months, which is part of why I want to throw myself into a project. Will I go back to what passes for normal? Will this ranking wind up drastically different due to the change in mental state? WHO KNOWS? We'll find out together. Expect lots of roleplaying as various characters and talking to myself as I work through emotions. Probably. Again, who knows what the write ups will actually look like? I certainly didn't plan on turning into the TaleSpin version of Shere Khan last topic, so we'll see if anything that novel happens this time!

Huh, I actually didn't know that. That's cool! Also makes it funnier that the video I linked is from a game that focuses heavily on Seed. (It covers Wing, Seed, 00, and Iron Blooded Orphans... but there are a lot of Seed spin-offs and sequels, so I feel that universe gets the most focus.)

...Kinda. My mind started playing the Huey Lewis song "Back in Time", but referred to it as "the Huey Lewis song from Back to the Future". So in a sense the song was first, but the first actual words I thought of were Back to the Future.

Speedway: Nice song seemingly about continuing on through adversity. Not quite my type of inspiration, but Google Translate gives a few nice lines such as "There's meaning in the night that won't be taken away". I remain easily manipulated by night. Also, once it fully kicks in, it kinda feels like a Gundam intro?

The intro of the song doesn't sync at all, but the fast-paced singing goes very well with beam sabers clashing once everything gets into full swing.

Cactus in the Valley: Intriguing. Some of these lyrics are very close to hitting hard... marks of madness & past disgraces make this better than the average love song, but it never fully clicks for me. I also wish it had done more with the richer, heavier part of the song... that is also my favorite part, but it's quite short. Still, high marks for lyrics and I could see myself loving this on the right day.
