New York recently became the largest U.S. city to require fast-food restaurants to schedule workers at least two weeks in advance, or pay them extra for changes.

IMO this is exactly where it makes sense for the government to cut in. The market can govern lots of things, but when you effectively force your employees to be at the ready 24/7 for work or cancellations it ruins their ability to have a life and do the very things that would help them become more skilled and thus graduate up to a better job.

This. Both Best Buy and Liz Claiborne Corp. did this bs when I worked for them years back. No schedule for next week until Saturday. Then either getting sent home early after an hour of work or getting attitude from bosses when you don't pick up your phone when someone calls off and they're looking for someone to cover at a moments notice. You're expected to sit waiting by your phone holding your breath for these assholes to call every day.
Are you a happy person? Do you have faith in humanity? Do you love your fellow man? Work retail. That'll all change if it hadn't already.

I do maintenance and janitorial work now. And let me tell you that honestly it pays better, it's steady, going in to work doesn't feel like I'm descending into the fifth level of hell. Okay. Unclogging a toilet is a thousand times better than having to deal with asshole retail management types who do nothing, nothing but fret over numbers of other stores all day, kiss ass and apologize to their bosses on the phone over numbers and make employees lives a living hell by fucking with your hours.

I'm 35.
I don't feel any different than I did at 20. I look different. I have an issue with my keens/chins sometimes. I do get more easily worn out if I'm suddenly doing a lot of physical activities. For instance I just went to the Grand Canyon two weeks ago. Going from basically no physical activity to that is like polar opposites. But of course hiking around with a 20 pound pack at 7000 feet is probably going to do anyone in.
I don't have the desire to do shit like stay out in town and go see a movie at full price at 10pm anymore. I can do it. But I would rather just go in the afternoon, get a drink at the Coffee Bean or Barnes and then come home.

I don't feel like I'm coping with anything though. As if age is like some monster creeping up behind me. Sure I'm older but whatever.
The one and only thing that does bother me a lot if I think about it too much is seeing my mother and aunts getting older too. Which yeah, duh. But I remember my mom vividly when she was 25. My aunts in their 40s. But 55, 70 and 74 now. It's bothersome knowing there's not much time left with them. With my aunts at least. My mom, I'm praying she's still got thirty years at least if family history is anything to go on. She certainly isn't in any ill health or has slowed down at all.

I work at my old high school sometimes. And my old elementary school too. 20 and 30 years ago for both those. It's weird.

A guy I sat next to in junior year went home and blew his brains out in front of his parents and girlfriend.
Not really at my high school but if anyone remembers out here in CA when Anthony Martinez was abducted and murdered in '97. It made national news. He got taken a block away from my math tutors house I use to go to. And at school they were recruiting the older kids to help in searching the local hills in sweeps.

Nothing at the school though.
The most exciting thing I ever did was jam a paperclip and break it off in the lock of my math class door and saved us all from class one day. I got dropped off early at like 6. I didn't want to be there. It was cold. I was tired. I hated math. I hated everything. So I just did that and went on a walk for an hour and then showed up like I just got there to everyone standing outside and trying to find someone to fix it. No one ever found out.

I have had teeth issues my whole life. No amount of brushing and flossing even prevented squat. I had all my permanent molars filled before I was 14. Had my top front teeth drilled and filled from cavities in my late teens/early twenties. A total of 4 root canals from those filling being shit. Toothaches became infections in all 4. That was when I was 23-27. And that first one was when I went 2 weeks with the pain before I went to the dentist. Between money and simply not wanting to deal with it despite the mind searing pain. I was trying every home remedy in the book and all the asprin I could handle. Just inhaling hurt. Top front tooth. The infected root went all the way up as it turns out. Swollen behind my nose. It felt like a searing hot ice pick or needle jammed behind my nose going to my eye. The other 3 were bad too but not quite that same level.

Eventually had most all the previous work redone plus had my wisdom teeth extracted by 29.

They're all swill piss water. More than anything else beer strikes me as the thing men drink because they think they're suppose to as a man. Because there's excellent tasting booze out there if the point is to have something that tastes good. Or if the point is to get tipsy then those other drinks work better and faster too.
Beer, especially dark ones is like running your tongue over cat crap and vinegar.

LA is trash. I live about 80 miles from it. I go to the USC football games once in a while but that's it. I would much rather go to San Diego. What people see in it I have no idea.

You ever wonder why they never show the neighborhood around the Coliseum during game breaks and just the USC campus. Why at every E3 you always get that one singular shot of the entrance of the convention center and never anything else. Because there's ghettos right across the streets of these places. There's dozens of homeless sleeping on the sidewalks even in the daytime. Graffiti on concrete walls, half century old storefronts with security fencing across the windows, vagrants wandering about.
Driving in that city at night feels like risking your own life. Coming out of a USC game at night? Oh you pay to get in the parking lot or in one of the cheaper parkings the students use on the campus and just walk the mile through USC. You park on the street just a block to the east across the freeway and it's like the post apocalypse.
