I don't really agree with the general theory of the article. If anything, a huge boom in the microbrew industry has led millenials to drink local, causing the major distributors who've been selling the same watered down piss for years to start to hurt. If anything, this is basic capitalism at work.

Fuck diamonds, fuck sports, fuck crappy watered down beer, fuck most gambling, wasteful vehicles, fuck marriage, fuck chain restaurants with no value and taste, fuck all the stupid shit our folks did to squander wealth with hedonistic idiocy.

I agree. Millennials are not going to be drinking 18/24 packs of bud or miller, but 6 or 12 packs of craft beer. The big beer companies make up a substantial amount of the market, so when millennials refuse to buy those, the overall market is going to go down. What the article misses is that it's not millennials disliking beer - it's millennials disliking shitty big beer products and going for craft and microbrews. Which, ultimately is a good thing because independent brewers get shafted all the time but now the craft beer industry is stronger than ever - which is how it should be.

Ideally, but big businesses have shown time and again that they don't really care about a free market and just want to be able to control everything for max profits.

Exactly. All that's happening right now is that people aren't settling for the shite that boomers did. That's not a sleight on boomers, either. They drunk what was available. But now people have woken up to the fact that you can drink quality beer instead of Miller or Coors, and it's having a positive effect on the industry.

Such nonsense really, do they expect people to just stop drinking beer? No. The beer industry is changing, that's all.

Yeah, but the tone of the article is that millennials prefer other liquors and wine over beer in general. Which I don't think is completely true. The fact that they don't mention craft beer or microbrews at all is astounding.

Sam Adams hasn't been craft/micro in a long time now and kind of did themselves in with their success. They showed there could be an alternative to Bud/Miller/Coors and paved the way for literally thousands of new breweries to come in. The people who will shun BMC in favor of Sam Adams are also people who are more likely to support their local brews, of which there are now more than ever.

Also this argument is stupid.

"Beer tastes gross. Instead let me drink this vinegar with sugar in it."

Yeah yeah, I know you're going to say "There are wines that taste good!" and it's the same with beer.

And mixing Orange Juice with rubbing alcohol I mean Vodka isn't really that much of an upgrade.

As has been said, the craft market is changing the industry. Big Beer is terrified of this and have been scrambling to do anything they can to keep their grip, most notably buying out successful microbreweries but the sheer number of breweries popping up offsets that. What they want to do is buy so many small breweries and keep them as fronts that people don't know what they're really buying. Before long, they'll be able to crowd out small brewers and maintain their grip.

Lots of breweries are thankfully resistant to those kind of predatory practices that help them do that and keep all the pluses of local breweries going. I have I think nearly 20 breweries within an hour drive from me with a huge variety of products far preferable to Budweiser and the like. I do not buy anything from AB and limit how much I spend on other Big Beer companies' products, which is easy as hell because of the sheer number of choices I have. Anything I could get from them I can get from another brewery and have a much better experience.

ChromaticAngel posted...

A half gallon is not even a six pack. $14 for a six pack is either a quality beer or a store with shitty prices.

Not if you're including bum wine. That's usually not much more expensive than malt liquor and has a much higher abv than any of them.

But yeah states/counties might have wildly different levels of taxes that factor in as well.
