Reading this topic makes me realize how weird FF7 was.

This. I never actually played it but hearing all this strange stuff makes me want to try it out.

It is pretty unique. Unfortunately, it does have some pacing issues , and some vital plot points are just squirreled away in random places that you'd never think to go to/revisit. Plus, the translation is a bit shoddy in places(though this is sometimes amusing). And, of course, it's full of random mini-games that range from passable to forgettable to annoying.

Hell, after doing some reading, saying Buchanan did nothing to stop the Civil War is being charitable to him. He personally pressed the Supreme Court to rule broadly on the Dred Scott case, because he wanted the slavery issue settled(in favor of slavery). He willfully ignored the popular will in Kansas and instead recognized the minority pro-slavery government. He bribed and blackmailed to achieve his ends. Like 90% of his cabinet went on to be Confederates. Winfield Scott urged him to take action against secessionists after Lincoln's election, but he ignored him entirely. He even released a statement in which, though he acknowledged secession as illegal, suggested that the federal government could not do anything about it. He was a corrupt piece of human garbage who literally made the Civil War into the horribly bloody nightmare that it was.

My point is, as bad as Trump is and may be, he'd basically have to foment a 2nd Civil War to be worse than Buchanan(AND be ludicrously, red-handedly guilty of colluding with Russia. Like, a video of him personally bowing before Putin and receiving his orders). That's the bar: if you don't cause a civil war, you're better than James Buchanan.

Hoover did nothing wrong

Well, there was the whole Bonus Army thing, where American military units commanded by Douglas MacArthur literally attacked a (peaceful) encampment of WW1 vets and their families. Hoover basically either ordered it, or let MacArthur get away with murder and brutality. A really bad look, no matter how you slice it.
He does get too much blame for the Depression though. It happened practically as soon as he took office, and, contrary to popular belief, he did try to alleviate it. Ineffectually, of course, but then, that's more a reflection of the limited understanding of economics of the time and less an indictment of Hoover and his administration. FDR was actually a lot less keen on taking decisive action to bolster the economy than is popularly believed, and was deeply concerned with the growing deficit and debt(which led to him curtailing the New Deal in 1936, likely prolonging the Great Depression). He didn't start tilting social democratic until the war.
Lastly, Hoover had a well-earned reputation as a skilled administrator and humanitarian(he ran a huge food aid network for Europe in the aftermath of the first World War) and remained a notable figure in the Republican Party into the '60s(IIRC, he spoke at the 1964 convention).

All sorts of reasons.

1) There was an overwhelming feeling, even among the Allied nations, that the Treaty of Versailles of was overly-punitive and had unjustly placed millions of Germans outside of Germany(e.g. in the Czechoslovak Sudetenland, for example).

2) France in particular had suffered horribly in the first World War, and had no appetite for further conflict. The British weren't much keener on conflict, thus they initially backed-down or compromised rather than attempt to enforce the letter of Treaty of Versailles(which was, again, quite unpopular).

3) The new states forged out of former Austro-Hungarian, German, and Russian lands in Eastern Europe spent much of the inter-war period engaged in border disputes among themselves, as basically no one was happy with the borders set at the Peace Conference(which ended up heavily favoring Czechoslovakia and Romania). Poland also got into a war with the Soviets over the Ukraine. All of this combined with the fact that there large, unhappy minorities who felt they had ended up in the "wrong" country, created a lot of instability and bad blood. As such, they did not band together as French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau had hoped, leaving them vulnerable to a resurgent Germany eager to reclaim lands that were, by many lights, rightfully theirs.

4) The Franco-British entente essentially treated Soviet Russia like a leper, in spite of the fact that Stalin was himself worried about a possibly-resurgent Germany. There is even the possibility that the USSR would have supported a military solution to the Sudeten crisis(probably for a price. Stalin did nothing out of the good of his heart). The Munich Agreement convinced the Soviets that the Entente wasn't serious about standing up to Germany, and they decided to get out of the way by signing the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.(of course, it didn't work out like that).

5) The U.S. wasn't terribly interested in any of this. Also, the 1929 stock market crash wrecked the global economy. Economic hardship helped extremists like Hitler at the polls, and made the French and British even less eager to act aggressively.

6)They initially thought Hitler was a cook and a crank and not a threat. Moreover, they (initially) had Mussolini on their side(Mussolini's threat of war caused Hitler to back-down from his first attempt at annexing Austria). Mussolini, being a power-mad megalomaniac, was willing to take actions the French and British weren't. However, Hitler and Mussolini soon came to an understanding.

Man of Steel wasn't bad and Cavill makes for a good Superman. I actually liked the thought of exploring Clark struggling with the reality of who(and what) he is and what to make of himself. The problem is that he never really makes himself Superman, in either Man of Steel or the follow-ups. They really needed to slow-roll things before going into the team-up(Iron Man, Thor, and Cap all got their own movies before Avengers).

People don't want dark and gritty super hero movies.

People are tired of them. The Dark Knight was 10 years ago. It's time for DC to move on already.

Eh, I wouldn't quite say THAT. There's a huge difference between the Nolan Batman trilogy and anything DC has put out since. The most fundamental being that Nolan Bat was its own thing in its own universe, the films, even at their worst, were all-around competent(and, at their best, were amazing), and Batman lends himself to that kind of thing. Lastly, it was a closed story, and even though Batman Begins was an origin story, it both was an origin that hadn't appeared in film in like 20 years and diverged significantly from the usual.

Then you have Zack Snyder do a dark-and-gritty Superman film that was mediocre at best, and instead of exploring this Superman more or(as Marvel did) exploring some other hero's story, you jump right into a film called Batman vs. Superman which barely features Superman and is also establishing most of the rest of the Justice League, you start getting into train-wreck territory. It shouldn't be surprising the most successful DC film so far was Wonder Woman, which struck a positive, feminist note(positive and feminist is basically WW in a nutshell) and focused almost exclusively on the title character, as opposed to focusing primarily on, say, Aquaman being mad at Wonder Woman for <reason> and, say, The Flash trying to get them to stop fighting for <reason>, only to have them stop fighting because they realize their pet goldfish had the same name.

Oh, it's probably worth mentioning that Stellaris and its expansions are on-sale in multiple places, including the (essential) Utopia expansion at -50% off. In fact, the Paradox Store offers it as a 3-for-2 option(presumably the cheapest eligible thing you pick up is free).
https://www.paradoxplaza.com/stellaris/STST01G-MASTER.html
Of course, everything from EU4 to CK2 to HoI4 to Tyranny expacs are eligible.

As far as Stellaris expansions go...

Must-Have
Utopia- Utopia adds Ascension Perks. Although Ascension Perks will become a base-game feature as of the 2.0 patch, the Biological, Technological(Synth), and Psionic Ascension Paths will remain locked by Utopia. It also offers Orbital Habitats, hive minds, and megastructures.

Good
Leviathans- Leviathans reworks exofauna(space monsters) to appear in clusters and adds a number of terrifyingly powerful uniques with varying rewards for killing them. It also adds special outposts. These outposts are inhabited by aliens who have been pursuing business, science, or the arts since time immemorial, and offer a variety of perks, for a price, of course.

Niche(but good)
Synthetic Dawn- This relates entirely to Machine Empires. You can make machine empires, in four flavors. The default machine empire type is similar to a (regular) hive mind, but the three variants are Determined Exterminators(they seek to eradicate all organic life), Assimilators(they seek to forcibly cyborgize all organic life and integrate it into the machine intelligence), and Rogue Servitors(robots who seek to "protect" organic lifeforms by confining them to lavish preserves where they are aggressively pampered). It also adds an additional Fallen Empire type(a machine empire seemingly designed to protect organics.....but from what?)

Pretty(but no game-play ramifications)
Plantoids Pack- Plant people portraits, complete with their own city art and ship set. They're pretty good.

Humanoids Pack- Star Trek-style "rubber forehead" aliens(including dwarves, orcs, and a cyclops!), as well as unique city art and a ship set.

Free
Horizon Signal- An event pack written by Alexis Kennedy(Sunless Sea). Primarily centered around the eponymous event.

Snake could go pure fire, or they could go with the obvious poison sub-type, or even Flying(don't think we have a Quetzacoatl yet).
Sheep....the stuff I suggested for ox also works, or they could be weird and do Fairy.
Horse? Huh. Fighting could work well here(kick-boxing horse!). They wouldn't do pure fire if they went this way: too close to Ponyta. Maybe Dark, make it a play on the flesh-eating horses from Greek myth?

It seems clear that Russia endorsed any candidate who claimed to intend to scale back America's foreign intervention.

I think it's more accurate to say that they identified:
1) Hillary Clinton as the favorite to win the election
2) Donald Trump as their preferred candidate
And they ran their operation accordingly: seeking to bolster Sanders in the primary(at the expense of Clinton) whilst torpedoing potential impediments to Trump's nomination, culminating in them running a disinformation campaign in the general election with the goal of helping Trump win. That is no longer debateable. The only thing debateable is how effective it was(I happen to believe it wasn't terribly effective).
Nonetheless, it represents an attack on our very system of government by a foreign power, and must be treated seriously. Any and all people who intentionally aided and abetted such an operation must be exposed and (where applicable) prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Anything less is a betrayal of our principles.

The Stellaris 2.0 Patch(Cherryh) and accompanying Apocalypse expansion go live in a week(2/22).

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-105-2-0-cherryh-patch-notes.1069794/
Patch notes are out, but I'll summarize for those looking for brevity.

-Apocalypse features, among other things, Colossi(ships that can destroy planets), Titans(massive flagships), and Marauders. Marauders will raid your borders, but can also be hired as mercenaries, and may also coalesce behind a Great Khan around mid-game.

-Cherryh Features.
*All empires use hyperlanes. Natural wormholes exist and can be stabilized to allow for point-to-point travel. Ancient gateways also exist, and new ones may be built(eventually). Jump Drives now allow you to "jump" to a nearby system without needing a hyperlane link, and can also bypass FTL inhibitors(but only a single jump).
*Systems are now exclusively claimed by building star bases in them and/or colonizing a planet. All military ship construction is done by star bases, which may be upgraded with a number of different modules with defensive, constructive, and economic benefits. Upgraded star bases cost maintenance and you can only have so many, but level 0 star bases do not count against the cap.
*Max fleet size is now capped
*Defensive armies are no longer a thing, and are instead generated by buildings(including government buildings). Assault transport fleets can now be automated to follow military fleets and invade planets automatically if the odds of success are good.
*Expanded tech tree, new civics, new ascension perks

In fact, I'll list the new civics, because they're cool:
Life-Seeded: Your species starts with a Size-25 Gaia world as their homeworld, but is poorly adapted to live on less ideal planets.
Survivor: Your species survived nuclear armageddon. Your home world is a Tomb World and your species can settle Tomb Worlds comfortably.
Barbaric Despoilers: When your fleets bombard enemy planets, they can steal pops.(There's also an Ascension Perk that does this. Barbaric Despoilers are barred from taking it, for obvious reasons).

For better or worse, Stellaris 2.0 figures to be a much different beast. I, personally, am optimistic. I'm familiar with the lead desginer's work. Martin "Wiz" Anward made a lot of great mods in his day, and presided over the fantastic Art of War expansion for EU4, but it may not be to everyone's liking.

He stopped the shut down for just an agreement to talk about the Dreamers, which will basically never get through the House. So he basically got nothing in exchange for re-opening the government.

He's also provisionally agreed to a 2-year budget in exchange for stuff like disaster relief funding and spending caps. Nothing at all about the Dreamers, aside from McConnell's previous assurance there would be a vote in the Senate on the matter(which is utterly meaningless if Paul Ryan doesn't agree to vote on it in the House). If they pass a budget, they basically give up what little leverage they have until 2019.

Heres NPRs annotated memo

Interesting bit at the end from the NPR White House Correspondent

Sources close to the president told NPR that he had been telling friends in recent days that he believed the memo would undermine special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into Russian election interference and possible connections to the Trump campaign. Trump allies have long claimed that if not for the Steele dossier, commissioned by political research firm Fusion GPS by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clintons campaign there would be no Russia investigation. But what this line in the memo reveals is that the investigation was initially triggered not by the Steele dossier but by information about the activities of Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos. in October 2017 to lying to the FBI; he is cooperating with the Mueller investigation.

Bold emphasis mine. So not only did this leak secret information that the Russians did not know (dates Carter was under surveillance), not only is it omitting relevant information about the nature of the investigation, it's all done specifically with the goal to undermine confidence in the FBI and the investigation... By the person under investigation. Holy corrpt fucksticks

And it actually explicitly disproves the notion that the Steele dossier is what triggered the initial FBI investigation. These people are very, very dumb.
