Guys, shut it lol. Dogs don't need meat in their diet. Cats need meat protein (taurine) because they're obligated carnivores. They need lots of meat protein to be healthy.

Dogs are omnivore. Like us. I don't know how well a bean diet would go. Consult a nutritionist. They definitely need more than rice and beans to live.

Omnivore means that they need proteins as well as they need vitamins. It doesn't mean that they can get away with it only eating meat or vegetals.

You are wrong. Omnivores do not require meat, they consume it when it is available. Most omnivores eat very little meat in their diets. Example: Chimpanzees are an omnivore that eats 98% plant matter, a few insects, and very rarely meat. Bears are a particularly well adapted omnivore with the ability to hunt and kill, and 90% of their diet is plants.

Yeah cats can't be vegan. They should really avoid any starchy carbs in the diet. They can eat other things occasionally the same way herbivores like deer occasionally eat birds, mice, and other small animals

You are right. They still need protein. That can be very hard to sustain with strictly plants. And in my scientific opinion, they need meat. Kind of like us. We are omnivorous too but a meat eater just turns out so much healthier overall. It's in our blood. Same for dogs.

A vegan diet would be so expensive and impractical.

We don't need meat to be healthy. Humans are a bad example there. There are hundreds of millions of strict vegetarians alive that tend to noticeably outlive their meat eating counterparts in the same regions.

Would a dog like meat? Yeah. Does a dog need meat to be healthy and happy? Veterinary science and nutrition suggests they do not.

Also not having meat tends to make a diet significantly less expensive I mean it's gonna cost more than Ol Roy and Beneful, which are mostly plant filler with meat by products, but it's not anywhere near a pricy canine diet

Well, when it comes to pets, a vegan diet would be pretty expensive. Humans have protein shakes and stuff if our diet is missing something.

Monkeys get a lot of protein from bugs and eating each other. I don't think vegans would approve.

Vegans can be pretty strict. No meat by products, no parts from any animal. Have you seen a vegan pet vs a normal one? Normal ones are usually healthier.

It's not really. Most people eat too much protein. Eating vegan you easily hit that protein goal just eating whole grains, lentils, legumes, and vegetables for a few meals in the day.

Vegan pet food is not overly expensive. It's cheaper than high end dry meat food and waaaaaaay cheaper than raw holy shit raw

Chimpanzees aren't monkeys. Again. 98% of their food from plants. Guess what has a lot of protein, surprisingly? Plants. It has a fuckton of protein.

uPDe8SJ

The only land animals that don't get a significant amount of protein from plants (if not all of it) are carnivores and humans eating a meat heavy diet, with few exceptions like canines that do tend to eat more meat but don't require it to be healthy.

Who the fuck cares as long as it is actually healthy. I guarantee people that care enough to feed their dog a vegan diet pay a lot more attention to nutrition and have healthier pets than average pet owners which are feeding shitty food from grocery stores. There are a lot of those average owners.

I think those people feeding bad food are taking bad care of their animals, yet owners that research and provide higher quality diets that meet nutritional needs fully are suspect

If you're curious if I've seen vegan dogs: I see thousands of animals each and every year, and yeah there are vegan dogs in there. A few were because the dogs had allergies to just about every meat out there. Others for their own reasons. Can't say there was anything unhealthy about the dogs. The local vets I consult with have said there's no issue with feeding a dog a vegan diet. Just don't do raw vegan. Cats are a no.

A dog can actually survive on a vegan diet, but it's not a good idea.
A cat however, will die in utter misery.

Humans can barely pull it off, and doing so almost always requires cobalamin supplementation or a diet extremely heavy on seaweed.

Uh most people have B12 deficiencies
The B12 in animal products is there because those animals are supplemented and it's excreted. They don't make their own B12 in the conditions they're kept.

I had a chronic B12 deficiency even with megadosing twice a week. Old doctor suggested meat a lot. Didn't work. Tracked it for 4 years and was close to needing B12 shots. When I stopped eating animals and animal products that B12 absorption issue stopped. I take one small B12 supplement once a week now and have never had better B12 levels. I was supplementing 4x what I am now and was chronically deficient, plus I ate all that B12 in animal products.

Seaweed is helpful occasionally for iodine. In very small amounts. Like fractions of a gram. You have to not eat a ton of seaweed because you can really overdo it. Know what else works? Iodized salt.

Generally, one doesn't have worry about iodine until one's thyroid starts to bloat up, or a nuclear war happens.
Also, why the hell is it so hard to find potassium iodide pills?

Iodine is super concentrated in some seaweed to the point where you will cause thyroid havoc if you're eating much of it regularly. People are warned to not overdo it. It's not required though.

I use furikake for flavor and iodine

I don't know, probably less nuclear winter planning. You might see them around more in the coming years

If you like more heat and less seaweed get shichimi.

And if you're at all concerned about animal ingredients careful with furikake, it's not usually vegetarian.

As long as it's an omnivore like say a dog or a rat and not a carnivore like a snake or a cat, it's fine.

Parents force their eating habits on children vegan or not. You ever see people with obese children that they feed fast food all the time? That's abuse, that's forcing your lifestyle and diet on a child, and that's becoming normal. Children can be raised vegan in a healthy way. It is healthier than the standard American children's diet of frozen, canned, and boxed food and fast food. Take care to supplement as needed, as you need to as an adult vegan or omnivore, and it works well.

Educate how to do it safely don't hate out of ignorance
