The Brotherhood of Steel is an option then.

But, yeah, the Settlement system needed more work. Settlements in more than one cell have a glitch since launch that causes settler resources to not count correctly, impacting happiness(which draws attacks and drops productivity). Also, the more Settlements you get the more likely you are to experience a string of attacks; which happens because a single attack drops happiness EVERYWHERE which in turns leads to a higher probability of attack. There's a trigger point where attacks seem to happen far too often, somewhere around when you have 20(out of 30) settlements.

The Radiant quest system for settlements is annoying as well. If you focus on settlements then the quests will come in groups of three in perpetuity, and failure can mean loss of thousands of units of crafting resources. So the only way to avoid it is to avoid both Preston and Radio Freedom/The Castle. Bethesda failed to grasp that such quests should always be opt-in by design.

Of course if they actually implemented that as part of a contract, and somehow any competitors didn't take advantage of it to lure customers away with the appeal of not having to deal with that crap, people would immediately find workarounds to it.

Hell, corporate types are still fighting companies to allow more 'work from home' time, since the pandemic proved that being in the office and sitting through meetings was largely a waste of time; outside of creative or research jobs there isn't much benefit to trudging through an office.

5e with some homebrew that pulls ideas from other editions offers the best of both, IMO.

E.g. in 5e consumable prices are terrible-- absolutely ridiculous-- whereas Pathfinder has fun subclasses like the Grenadier Alchemist which crafts a certain number of bombs per day just by existing. 5e at least made an attempt to later correct that with the Artificer class; and the Artillerist is definitely fun to play.

From what I remember, basically the entire game is easy if you have a Reckoning Mode built up. Otherwise a few fights could be difficult, but that was usually due to enemies that scaled in groups. So stuff like the Maid of Windemere fight or some of the Sprite ambushes.

As for playing a spell caster, IIRC you can go pure caster with enough points left over for stealth, which allows Meteor to deal sneak attack damage(though sometimes the pre-crash stones eat up the sneak attack bonus).

Eventually though, through Sagecraft, can have your mana recover faster than you can build up spells. I remember the combat devolving into infinite juggles between Mark of Flame(against 7 targets, maybe 8) and Lightning Storm. That assumes a target is allowed to survive a stealth Meteor. Mages get crazy powerful.

I was fond of the 'Commando' style: 9mm SMG, combat rifles, grenade rifle, etc. Ammo types can be important too. E.g. people panic about Cazadors but I usually just directed some 9mm Hollowpoints their way and watched them poof like smoke. Similarly the grenade rifle was great against Legion assassination squads. One or two grenades would shred them, and then you could loot all their weapons. I forget the name but remember there were some decent .308 round chambered rifles subject to Commando that did well enough punching holes through Deathclaws and Giant Radscorpions.

Speaking of... Jury Rigging is a great perk worth taking so get your Repair skill to 90. It lets you repair rare/unique items with common trash from the same type category. This also has the benefit of making it easier to get money. To take the Legion assassination example, you can use the cheaper rifles they carry to repair the rarer ones and then sell those for greater caps.

If you like explosives at all the Mad Bomber perk is fun. By crafting MFC Grenades(Micro Fusion Cells, basically ammo for laser weapons) you get infinite explosives. It also lets you craft an overkill version of the Time Bomb, IIRC. That bomb basically obliterates anything nearby when it detonates.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning had fairly fun (if OP) combat.
I'll say this... the way they handled Staves was great in that game: gather enemies together, knock them away, etc. Staves really flowed well with the spells. It's just that the spells themselves were ridiculously powerful: stealth damage Meteor, Lightning Storms, Mark of Fire against 7 targets, etc.

Cemith posted...
there's no sense of range, no enemies really ever stagger, and there's no weight to melee combat.
But there is... and staggers are an essential part of doing well in the combat. The weight thing is valid though. By mentioning a lack of staggers you're inadvertently announcing that you didn't use animation cancels when playing Skyrim. Power swings, of which you could get infinite if you eat some Vegetable Soup at the start of a combat zone, cause staggers when enemies aren't attacking. You can cancel attack animations into a power swing. So usually you get a rhythm going of: power swing to stagger, normal swing, normal swing, animation cancel back into a power swing to repeat the pattern. It's not complex by any means; but I'll take it over Eurojank anyday.
