Admittedly, the Licence Exam arc (the one you stopped on) is intended as a breather after that one, so it makes sense you'd feel the stakes are quite low. And I did think it was fairly weak (that one actually DID have a lot of filler, about half the fights never happened in the manga). That's fair. But in general I can't really latch on to the struggles of anyone in the main cast because nothing permanent seems to happen to them. Deku is always supposedly one swing from breaking his arms forever but really it's fine, it's like a faux sacrifice. There's all these moments of foreshadowing like what would happen to Iida during the blood guy arc and nothing really happens to him. Bakugo gets kidnapped by the enemy and they try to persuade him and we know he has a troubled history but nothing comes from it. The only character who has had actual serious change from the story is All Might and we knew he was down a one-way road from his first appearance. I know this isn't necessarily atypical of shonens but it does irk me a lot, my shonen background is HxH, Jojo, YGO, Deathnote where it feels like characters are in real danger a lot and a large cast gets thinned out. But with MHA there's a ton of characters but nothing too bad or permanent can happen to them. --- |
