I'd put $10M aside for my dream homes. Primary place would be in Port Angeles, WA, Bellingham WA, Bend, OR, Hood River, OR, Twin Falls, ID. Maybe a few others but I would do up to $9M on primary place and spend remaining (at least $1M). Property needs at least 10 acres, should be surrounded by large lots as well. At most 15 minutes from the city. Ideally has water on it, maybe a creek or in Port Angeles, ocean front.

Second property would be a condo in San Diego. I'd need to stay some winters down there to see where exactly I would want to live. Experience so far says La Jolla or Coronado.

Set aside another $5M of crazy money. I will give myself an annual allowance and this will be for anything above that. Would be invested until used in an aggressive mix of stocks, mostly tech, with a bit in crypto, like 10%.

Work with a fiduciary financial planner, put remaining $85M in a conservative mix of stocks mostly dividend paying established companies, bonds, precious metals, tiny bit of crypto, like 1%. Target 6-8%.

Use that to pay out $500k per year to myself cash, after taxes taken care of. Taxes, HOA fees, maintenance on homes, insurance (property and personal) would add up to average $100k / year, probably increasing slightly faster than inflation but not ridiculously so. Leave's $400k a year to be a playboy with. Spend my time skiing, fishing, hunting, racing, boating, dirt biking, wind surfing, whatever. I would want to learn how to be a diesel mechanic, auto mechanic, welder, cnc machine operator / designer, 3d printing, various things on reusable energy and electricity in general (including automotive) etc.

Figure after about 10 years of that, I'll get bored. I will then take my skills and go to Africa or SE Asia or S. America or the likes to be a source of local mystery, just some white guy that showed up out of no where and started fixing shit for free under the name Wayne Duke. Use my knowledge and some of my resources to develop the area. From simple stuff like "hey, poor village, this is how you fill an application to get funding for a school or hospital from this group of americans" or whatever up to like using my money develop a power grid or something.

After I get tired of that, leave, but return every couple of years and do some big project. Try to develop cult worshippers maybe? Or maybe just settle for hero? Upon death donate a sizable portion of my wealth to help develop the region in perpetuity.

Yes. School is not what it was when most of us were growing up and these kids legitimately dont learn anything. Literature is now considered racist, history is watered down for the same reasons, so the only things they focus on are science and math. Politics are also being forced on kids at a very young age.

Modern kids are not set up for success.

I'm a millennial and I was literally taught:
- the us has never lost a war
- absolutely nothing post WW2
- Rome was the US of the ancient world and it was great and everyone loved Rome

I listed to hardcore history and couldn't BELIEVE how much was white washed and ignored

Huh the reviews are extremely mixed. Lots of "better than BotW!" and also lots of these:

mediocre BotW-clone with some God of War-style combat elements. There's none of the depth, magic, freedom, and clarity of BotW, instead you get bogged down with the typical Ubisoft Open World crap, the map gets littered with icons which you work off like chores on a check-list, you follow the typical waypoints instead of truly exploring, the dialogue (delivered with questionable accents) tries extremely hard to be funny but just ends up incredibly cringey instead

Can't recommend it enough. It's the only rogue like that I've spent a significant time playing. I put in about 60 hours before I started to get tired of it. I was nowhere near conquering endgame challenges

Or as an ultimate timesink just play Warframe and grind away forever.

I played Hades for like 1 hour probably and really disliked it, what do you like about it? It was just repetitive to me. You're not really going anywhere, it's just square after square after square...

But I barely gave it a chance

I'd argue that the outdoor opportunities are much better, there are tons of parks you can visit and if you want to get away from people more then it isn't that far of a drive. If you want to go somewhere with ZERO people or shoot guns from your backyard then yeah you're SOL but there are going to be things you can do in one place and not the other. Nowhere has everything, but the city generally has much more, even if it sometimes costs money. I live within my means anyway so it really doesn't matter to me, what am I getting out of saving more? I'd rather enjoy life now in my relative physical prime than think about maximizing how I'm going to live when I'm like 70.

If you prefer the country life anyway more power to you but I think people should avoid the trappings of idealizing it cause many of them might well find it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I have 1 million acres of wilderness, mountains, rivers and trails and I don't have to do anything but open my door... lol. We have different ideas of outdoors

But that's my point. City living costs more money, I'm not saying either is better. He was just wondering how to make it work. You gotta be plugged into the system to participate in city life

I think people underestimate how expensive it is to live in a city.

Never eat out, never commute to work, never pay for streaming or tv, never pay for parking or concerts or anything. Your fun is free, some of your food is free. Housing is cheap. You also never sit in traffic or wait in line so you have a lot more free time to take classes or work on projects

So $100-$150/mo for food, $700 mortgage (half paid by your spouse), +insurances, no debt... You're looking at $700-$1000 every month in total costs

One thing the online tax companies like to do is get you sucked in with a cheap price but then once you start adding stuff you are forced to upgrade. Like for instance turbotax requires the deluxe version in order to add short term stock gains to your filing, which adds another $40 or so. Something to consider because I've never had to add stuff like buying a house or unemployment.

I had a feeling they'd do this

One of the hr block options is "leave your documents with us and we'll do it all". I feel like they'll bill me $200+ with a bunch of added shit

In 2020 I worked for 4 employers, sold stocks, bought a house, was on unemployment, moved to another state, and I'm married

My in laws' accountant usually does them for me. HR block is only $70, is that worth it?

The only legal benefit I've found is we can bundle all of our insurance together for a cheaper rate

I can also talk to the doctor for her I guess.

A savings account is better than some kind of investment for emergency needs because it's more readily available.

A savings account is also better than a checking account for emergency needs because it's generally more secure.

It's about managing risk in both cases, but they're different trade-offs.

I recently had to cancel my debit card because I saw an unrecognized transaction in my checking account.

It's not a big deal... Except when it is. Like giant aspirins example. I mean it's not a big probability event but what's the downside of the savings account? It's not the rate of return if you compare it to a checking account

Ah ok this makes sense. I guess I personally just don't feel like I need this. I was assuming I was missing something, but I'm fine with my level of security. If others need more, I get that

Well the typical answer I see from googling this question is "the savings acct makes you money!"

But an index fund makes you 5% a year and a savings account makes you 0.01% so surely there is another benefit?

Also always good to have a safety cushion for when you hit a rough patch.

But why keep it in the savings account specifically? I keep a cushion in my checking account already

In Colorado in the 90s they ran out of money for non essential plowing and there was a huge snowstorm. There was like 3 weeks that no one without a 4wd suv could even go to the store. The shelves were empty. There were a ridiculous amount of cars stuck in ditches.

And this is just snow. The south gets ice storms. The only reason northerners consider themselves superior is they have infrastructure for snow removal
