In Colorado in the 90s they ran out of money for non essential plowing and there was a huge snowstorm. There was like 3 weeks that no one without a 4wd suv could even go to the store. The shelves were empty. There were a ridiculous amount of cars stuck in ditches.

And this is just snow. The south gets ice storms. The only reason northerners consider themselves superior is they have infrastructure for snow removal

As someone who was brought up in the south, no. Southerners are exponentially worse at driving in icy conditions and it's not even close. They will fishtail the fuck out of you just because they have an f-150 and the confidence of a person who's never failed.

As someone who lived in NH for a majority of their life, southerners are DEFINITELY worse at driving in the snow.

It snowed in Vegas a couple years back (like, less than an inch) and the amount of crashes were just... pathetic in a horrifying way.

To be fair snow plows don't instantly make the road safe.

Our infrastructure also doesn't completely protect us from ice storms so bad they can cause trees to fall on our homes, vehicles, power lines, roads, satellites, phone and radio antennas, etc. Resulting in having no power for 2-3 weeks, and in rare situations longer.

part of it is definitely infrastructure, but not entirely. in 2018 NC got less than a foot of snow in the area i live in and work did not get immediately called out so i had to drive out into it. it was like a fucking zombie apocalypse or something. cars were in ditches, people were skidding and sliding all over the place, and most of the roads had their lines iced and snowed over so people were driving down the middle of the two lanes like there were no longer any rules

I grew up in florida and had literally no experience whatsoever with snow or icy roads. I'd never even seen snow irl, except a very light flurry that melted before it hit the ground when I visited my aunt/uncle up in new jersey.

The first time I drove in snow/iced over roads, I had to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane, ran a 4 way stop sign to avoid a rear end collision, and later wound up skidding into a thankfully empty intersection when i stopped (this was a bit later, not immediately after).

Nah, I grew up in snow and moved south when I got older. People down here are morons in the snow. They don't leave a safe stopping distance. They don't slow for turns or curves. The north has better snow removal but they also don't implement those services unless I gets bad bc they know most people can traverse slightly icy conditions ok.

I think a significant factor is that people in the southern states have no good reason to own winter tires. "All-season" tires really aren't very good in the snow.

The part of the highway that happened at is apparently bad even in good conditions and the company that operates it did not make sure their "product" was safe to use before allowing it to be.

Also the conditions that led to that almost never happen up north.

Having snow tires is a luxury. Do you think everyone has an extra set of tires set aside for winter? A lot of people drive beater cars.

I've always driven in all season tires. Certainly not as good as a big 4 wheel drive truck, but I manage to get around.

It really can't be stressed enough that it is entirely possible to just drive careful. Like anyone can just drive much slower and very slowly test out what level of speed you can handle.

You must not be Canadian. Winter tires are not a luxury here, winter is long enough to make them a valuable investment, they're cheaper than ending up in the ditch and fucking up your alignment or your front end. There are still a few people who don't use them here, those are the drivers we give a wide berth to.

you can finance winter tires here through our provinces insurance, interest free, so I got a set of winter tires in 2014 $25 month for for years, they just want winter tires out there

Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec.

They should be mandatory everywhere it snows and the snow stays.
