You ever figure out why your half sister had a worse relationship with him?

Yeah. He got her mom pregnant when she was in college and he walked out on her. Her mom resented him for this, rightfully so, and I'm guessing her mom took the opposite approach that my mom did and told her the full story. So she always resented him. Her mom died at some point before my dad was sick, but she wouldn't even let him go to the funeral.

At some point, I need to reach out to her to get some kind of relationship going. I have this (likely) weird and stupid fear that she was see too much of my dad in me and resent me as well. At the very least, we're going to have to make a decision about what is going to happen with our grandparents' house. Our aunts and uncles have legal ownership of it at the moment and a cousin of ours is living there... But the decision is eventually going to fall to us.

I have absolutely no interest in managing a house or land in Pollard, AL, but I know the family doesn't want to sell the place.

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-lawyers-larocca-hornik-aj-delgado-lawsuit-manhattan-1895983

A law firm wants to withdraw from representing Donald Trump, citing a breakdown in relations, court documents show.

In a filing to a Manhattan court, the law firmLaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Rosen, Kittridge, Carlin and McPartlandsaid there had been an "irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship."

The firm, which has represented Trump and his election campaign for several years, had been defending the former president in a lawsuit filed by A.J. Delgado, Trump's former senior advisor who said she was fired after she became pregnant by her supervisor during the 2016 presidential campaign. She was Trump's director of Hispanic outreach at the time.

Delgado is suing the Trump campaign and Trump's former advisers Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer, claiming gender and pregnancy discrimination. All the defendants have denied any wrongdoing in the case.

Just finished reading through the DC Bar panel's recommendation. It outlined the entire play-by-play of Clark's efforts to interfere. He basically attempted to usurp Rosen's authority as Acting Attorney General.

The panel recommended disbarment and refused to consider, or even entertain, a lesser sanction.

I haven't read the recommendation, but that's my understanding from what I remember of the January 6th Select Committee's report and reading through Liz Cheney's and Cassidy Hutchinson's books.

Yeah... I think it's pretty much impossible to know if the kid will be better off knowing or not knowing. My mom chose the latter, and I get it. I don't fault her at all for trying to do what she thought was best in that regard.

Sucks that you still have attachment to that whole mess. Hope you got some closure out of what your relatives told you, at least.

Yeah, I feel like the toughest part of the whole ordeal was not knowing anything about that. My parents were hostile towards each other my whole life and I never knew why until then. The summer before 9th grade, I got viral mengingitis. My dad decided to come to Austin to see me in the hospital and they pretty much had to be in the room together with each other. They started arguing about money while I was laying on the hospital bed, and I just didn't understand why they were so angry at each other even in that moment.

My mom and dad were both pretty successful, but they split when I was about 1 year old. Growing up, I never knew the reason. My dad would never talk about it voluntarily and my mom never wanted to speak negatively about him in front of me. My mom would just repeatedly beg me to not start doing drugs and leave it at that, for the most part.

Here and there, my dad would do really weird shit and that was when it really hit me that he still had a drug problem. I can't remember which year it was at this point, but my dad wrote me a check for my birthday and sent it to me in the mail. He spent the money on drugs before I could cash it, though, so the check bounced and I had to pay a $35 fee. I had never tried to cash a bad check before, so in the moment, I was panicking and thinking I was going to go to jail. I called the bank and explained the situation, expecting them to talk about having me arrested. They said the fee was the only thing that would happen, which was somewhat relieving.

I called my dad to ask what the problem was. He was extremely apologetic and said he would send me a money order to make up for it. A few days later, I got an envelope in the mail and there was nothing in it. I was pissed. I called him to tell him that there was nothing in the envelope. He started a self pity thing and I just told him not to send me any more money. At this point, I still never understood why my parents split up, but that event gave me a small idea.

My dad was gravely ill in early to mid 2018. I was at the point where I had mostly grown apart from even having an attachment to him. I would answer the phone when he called and be cordial, but he had gone into a pretty extreme conspiracy theory rabbit hole and I didn't enjoy talking to him any more. I was debating whether I even wanted to go to Alabama to see him. My cousins were telling me that his health was deteriorating pretty quickly, so I decided to go.

I was working a ton on a regular basis and ESPN was having an event at a certain location at my old job. I made sure the network was ready for that and then just started driving from Austin, TX to Pollard, AL to go see him. I think I started the drive at about 10am.

By the time I got to Louisiana, they had moved him to a hospital in Pensacola, FL because he kept voluntarily leaving the hospital in Alabama and one of my cousins needed to be close to him. It wasn't much of a difference for me because I was just driving on I10 any way.

I got to the hospital and saw my dad for the first time in years. He seemed to be in good spirits, but had some serious health issues. I wanted to ask him about the weird stuff he had done and ask all the why questions, but... I just couldn't muster the courage to do it. I had a feeling he wasn't going to live much longer and didn't want him to have to relive any of the bad times.

I have an older half sister that I found out about when I was 17 and she had an even worse relationship with him than I did. She never showed up to the hospital and I don't really blame her after finding out what she went through. We don't really have a relationship with each other at all outside of being friends on Facebook. We're gonna have to fix that at some point.

The day came when we had to decide to put him in hospice care. It was technically my decision since I was the next of kin, but... I didn't want to make it alone, so my cousins and aunts and uncles who were present agreed that we could make the decision as a group. This was fucking hard. Having to accept that my dad was going to die in that moment was tough.

My dad was in hospice care and it was about 9 or 10 at night. My cousins, aunts, and uncles had been at the hospital all day. We sat on a couch in the hotel lobby and just started talking about random things. The mystery of my parents' divorce was heavy on my mind, though. So I figured I would ask them.

They weren't aware that I didn't know the story, but they told me the whole situation. My dad was a plant manager at some construction company in Florida. He decided to give one of my cousins a ride home in the company car, but he was drunk. He hit some lady and put her in a wheelchair. She sued the company for about $2,000,000 in the 80s and he lost his job. That started a downward spiral of doing hard drugs for him.

My granddad had built a house in Pollard, AL and that's where my dad's side of the family grew up. My grandparents brought him back home to pay for him to go through rehab and stuff. He completed rehab, but went back into the same environment and started doing drugs again. So my mom left. I feel like I know enough of the story that I'm not really in need to know exactly how bad my dad got, but... I do wish I had asked my dad about it when I had the chance.

My mom was working for IBM at the time and her boss was aware of everything that was going on. He helped her get a different job with the company in Austin, TX so she could get far away from him. So when I was about 3, my mom drove with me from Pensacola, FL to Austin, TX. Being in the car during this trip is one of my earliest memories.

I'd go visit my dad every now and then, but my mom was never happy about it and I never knew why until that night in the hospital after we put him in hospice care.

So I have some idea of what the deal was with that bad check, but I wish I had taken the time to ask him about it directly and get a detailed explanation about that and many other things.

If it was truly a matter of competition, Spectrum, in 2013, COULD have:
  • Increased bandwidth for customers from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps FOR FREE (as they did after Google Fiber came to town)
  • AT&T would have then had to follow suit and offer better service to compete
  • Increased bandwidth for customers from 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps FOR FREE (as they did after Google Fiber came to town)
  • AT&T would have then had to follow suit and offer better service to compete

Instead, Spectrum chose to rest on their laurels because they knew AT&T wasn't doing anything either and vice versa. If they truly wanted to compete, they easily could have offered better speeds to gain marketshare, but they were actively not doing so.

Coincidence doesn't equal coordination you have to prove this.

I said it's not a coincidence, not that it is. You yourself said this:

Deegs posted...
Often times a Duopoly isn't much better than a monopoly because neither party has to be substantially better than the other.

Do you think ISPs aren't aware of this or something? Do you really think, with two separate technologies that have entirely separate physical limitations on bandwidth, it's a coincidence that neither AT&T or Spectrum offered more than 50 Mbps? AT&T and Spectrum were both well aware that they existed in a duopoly in most of the city and didn't have to be substantially better than the other. Time Warner's CTO put out a blatantly false statement about customers not wanting higher speeds and AT&T followed suit. It's plain as day.

All of a sudden when Google Fiber comes to town, Spectrum starts increasing their speeds. If they truly thought customers didn't want higher speeds based on an actual legitimate poll instead of whatever bullshit they cooked up to justify the statement, they never would have bothered and their customers would have been happy staying with their lower speeds.

Suddenly Spectrum starts giving their customers free upgrades to 100 Mbps and then 200 Mbps. They didn't do that out of the goodness of their hearts. Then AT&T starts planning for Gigabit service. Then Spectrum starts offering 930 Mbps/35 Mbps over coax.

If Spectrum had actually done a legitimate poll of their customers or done some actual research, they would have known that there was a ton of desire for higher bandwidth at the time.

Coordination doesn't have to be explicit to be coordination.

This has to be proven though. Where is the link that they were coordinating together to keep speeds and prices low? Google came in, and played the role of market disruptor causing both AT&T and Spectrum to innovate. This is why for a true competition to exist you need at least 3 parties. Often times a Duopoly isn't much better than a monopoly because neither party has to be substantially better than the other.

It's not a coincidence that neither ISP offered more than 50 Mbps throughout the city. The ISPs are also well aware that they don't have to be substantially better than the other in a duopoly. It's like you're arguing that they were coordinating with each other while trying to argue that they aren't coordinating with each other.

This is an example of competition driving advancement though. Neither AT&T or Spectrum wanted to try so Google, a competitor, came in and pushed them to do so. Now if Spectrum and AT&T had some kind of agreement in play that neither one would offer something better than the other that is different but simply not wanting to try isn't illegal.

It's both an example of ISPs coordinating with each other to keep speeds low and prices high and an example of competition driving advancement. No one sued Spectrum or AT&T for the former.

I don't think you have this quite correct. Municipalities definitely have entered into exclusivity deals with ISP that much is true but price fixing is an illegal practice. If multiple ISPs in a region conspire to fix prices this would result in a lawsuit. Open to reading more on this but there has no such price fixing scheme brought to light legally speaking that I'm aware of.

It wouldnt necessarily result in a lawsuit. Weve seen in this play out in real life already. Neither Spectrum or AT&T wanted to offer gigabit internet service to residential users and coordinated with each other in this effort. At my moms house in Austin, TX, those were the only two options.

2013: https://www.wired.com/2013/02/time-warner-cable-2/

On Wednesday, at a conference in San Francisco, Esteves downplayed the importance of offering a service to compete with Google, as reported by The Verge. "We're in the business of delivering what consumers want, and to stay a little ahead of what we think they will want.... We just don't see the need of delivering that to consumers," she said, referring to gigabit-speed internet connections.

April 9, 2013: Google Fiber announced that they were going to deliver gigabit internet service in Austin, TX
https://money.cnn.com/2013/04/09/technology/innovation/google-fiber-austin/

October 1, 2013: AT&T unveils plan for service to compete with Google Fiber
https://www.wired.com/2013/10/fiber-austin/

April 21, 2014: AT&T said they were going to beat Google to the punch
https://venturebeat.com/business/att-wants-to-beat-google-fiber-to-the-punch-in-21-new-cities/

As a result, Austin, TX went from largely either being able to choose from having a 50 Mbps max download speed from either AT&T or Spectrum to having Google Fiber offer 1 Gbps, AT&T offer 1 Gbps, and Spectrum offering either 1 Gbps through fiber or 930 Mbps down and 35 Mbps up through coax. For around the $70 price point that Google was offering.A smaller ISP in the area named Grande also started offering gigabit internet after Google Fibers announcement.

As far as I know, no one sued Spectrum or AT&T for keeping speeds low at a price they could have offered gigabit service until Google Fiber made their announcement and started delivering service.

They're not the same. Your ears (or technically the language structures in your brain) just aren't trained to hear the difference. To a native Japanese speaker, and sound very different.

It's just one of those things that will come naturally with practice. Especially if you make an effort to pronounce them properly yourself.

I'm like 20 days into Duolingo lessons and they sound different to me in those videos he posted. One pronounced shi and the other pronounced hi

Network engineering has worked out well for me. You definitely gotta be OK with working nights here and there as well as being a part of an on-call rotation, but... as long as you're on a team of network engineers and you're not the only one in the whole company, I think it's fine.

I started out my adult life bouncing from job to job to job because I had no idea of what I really wanted to do. Retail --> Life insurance / home loans --> Telemarketing --> Retail --> Telemarketing --> Manufacturing --> Data entry --> ISP tech support --> Desktop tech support --> Network operations center --> Network engineer --> Senior network engineer

How about that

The lack of personal responsibility in these people is really wild. Imagine traveling hours with the intention of committing violent acts, beating the shit out of police, and then trying to blame other people. I couldn't associate with these people IRL. Especially when they're acting like everyone else is just supposed to think they aren't responsible for what they chose to do.

Chesebro also reached out to James Wigderson, a longtime writer on Wisconsin politics who ran a conservative news site. Chesebro was trying to gin up coverage of claims that there were irregularities in the Wisconsin results, according to documents obtained by CNN.

You can spare me this stuff. Thanks. Trump lost, Wigderson told Chesebro, later adding, I really dont have time for conspiracy theories. Thanks for understanding.
Parts of this exchange were previously reported by The New York Times.

Chesebro also privately pinged several other Wisconsin political pundits and legal scholars, including some whom he sparred with in public Twitter posts. Most were ignored.

One of the attorneys Chesebro privately targeted was Daniel Rodriguez, who attended Northwestern Universitys law school with Chesebro and is now a professor there. On December 29, 2020, Chesebro sent link to Rodriguez about a new lawsuit from the Trump campaign trying to overturn the Wisconsin results. Rodriguez replied with LOL.

I dont remember this exchange exactly, Rodriguez told CNN in an email, but my best guess is that the LOL was because this whole false electors lawsuit business was, and is, insane.
The Wisconsin litigation like dozens of other Trump election suits failed in court.

So again it's not like he wasn't told in various ways by sensible colleagues... Insanity.

According to this, it seems the defamation lawsuit against Dinesh D'Souza and others related to 2000 Mules is proceeding... The discovery period was extended to August 2, 2024. I really hope they force this to go to trial, but I think a settlement is highly likely. The defendants are full of shit and True the Vote has already admitted they don't have any evidence to support the claims of voter fraud in this case.

OAN, a conservative news network, issued a retraction and apology to former attorney Michael Cohen after falsely reporting he had a six-month affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

In a statement on Monday, OAN made it clear that no one should rely on the outlet's reporting about Cohen's alleged affair. The outlet said it had used a source supposedly in contact with disgraced attorney Michael Avenatti, who subsequently denied that he ever made such claims.

"The so-called whistleblower, Mr. Avenatti, has denied making the allegations. OAN apologizes to Mr. Cohen for any harm the publication may have caused him," the statement said.

"The article, quoting a source, falsely claimed that Mr. Cohen and Ms. Daniels 'were having an affair since 2006' and that, according to a source, 'the whole hush money scheme was cooked up by [Mr. Cohen] to extort the Trump Organization before the 2016 election,'" the statement continued. "These statements were false. OAN regrets their publication."

OAN with another retraction. So far they've:
  • Settled with Smartmatic
  • Settled with Dominion
  • Settled with Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss
  • Retracted a story they put out about Michael Cohen

And they're still facing further possible legal issues because their executives may have violated state and federal data privacy laws after sharing Smartmatic employee passwords with Sidney Powell.

I'm gonna need some more explanation than this because the in () / (as***a) sounds exactly the same as the in

From what it sounds like in Duolingo, I've understood to be pronounced almost like a hissing snake while is what I understood as shi. Kinda like how is fu, but you don't let your teeth touch your lips

Asked this in another thread but I'm confused what Net Neutrality even gets us at this point. I'm very aware of the horror stories of a carved up internet but we were without net neutrality for 7 years and never got anything even remotely similar. I'm not against regulation where warranted but I'm not sure this one particularly is.

https://consumerist.com/2014/02/23/netflix
-agrees-to-pay-comcast-to-end-slowdown/

Net neutrality regulations came into play because multiple US ISPs were throttling traffic to Netflix. Netflix eventually paid money to those ISPs to get them to stop throttling traffic and then passed the cost of those payments down to Netflix subscribers by increasing the subscription fee.

The state of the internet is better in 2024 than it was in 2014 in that high fiber is much more prevalent in ISP networks. However, without net neutrality regulations in place, we're just trusting ISPs to not do that again.

Is he Jedi Mind Tricking people or something? I have no fucking idea how he managed to build this kind of cult around him.

I think there eventually needs to be a large societal study about this. It makes no sense for tens of millions of people to believe what Donald Trump is selling over and over.

I've had a few jobs like that where my mental state was severely deteriorating over time. I was at one of those jobs for about 4.25 years.
