The first is a half truth, tax rates were higher in the 50s for the wealthy but that is not the same as the effective tax rate (what you actually pay). Meaning no one was actually paying 90% on any part of their income back then. Tax rates were lowered in part to close many of those loopholes and bring the rate more in line with what people were actually paying. The stagnant wages claim is even more popular, usually because a bad "report" gets parroted by media outlets every month or so. It makes a good headline. When you use two different inflation calculators for wages and GDP growth, leave out non-monetary compensation, take snapshots of groups of people who change over time, etc you get an inaccurate figure of what is actually happening.
