So I see two problems with the guru site.

One, it for some reason updated early today to assume 2001 won but hasn't done so yet for 2008. I assume the former was an accident? I feel like we should have learned from Draven and Undertale that it ain't over till it's over.

Two:

In addition to no FFX, no Fallout 3 either. I think New Vegas was that fanbase's favorite Bethesda Fallout though, so it sorta makes sense I guess?

Kingdom Hearts I also failed to make the list but I was expecting that.

Their FF ranking:
FFVI > FFT > FFIV > FFXII > FFIX > FFVII > FFI > rest

Oh, and:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy VI
7. Secret of Mana
19. Earthbound
20. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
22. Final Fantasy IV
33. Dragon Quest V
39. Ogre Battle
56. Super Mario RPG
58. Lufia II
79. Illusion of Gaia

Remember when SOTC beat MGS3? I think that's when MGS other than MGS1 died on this site.

MGS3 was actually the game that beat SotC in 2010 after SotC beat MGS2 and MGS4. Then in 2015 MGS1 beat SotC worse before losing to MGS3.

I don't expect depth to be nearly as important as each years strongest game really, except in the case of 98 where it's depth blows everything out of the water.

Zelda > Mario of course but I assumed SMB3 > MM

SMB3 is probably still stronger than MM - I'd call it more likely than not anyways - but note that Majora's Mask (narrowly) won this site's Game of the Decade contest back in 2010. It's a strong game on it's own. If depth matters at all, 1990 is probably toast.

-Final Fantasy Tactics

That's 19 games I really doubt would miss a top 100; maybe Deus Ex if their RPG standards suddenly became arbitrarily strict after previously including Illusion of Gaia and Stardew Valley. Any guesses on the last game? If Fallout 4 or Oblivion were going to show up, they really should have done so before now. Pokemon GSC wasn't even on their 2012 list, nor were any of the non-Persona SMT games. Secret of Mana and Diablo 1 were 15th and 16th on their 2012 list which was weird even then and them would look ludicrous now. Maybe they hadn't played Mother 3 at the time and have since done so? I dunno.

Their 2012 list:

Yup. I am guessing the demographics skew pretty young here and people are voting for what they remember over what they've only read about.

I'm 42 years old and am generally voting for the earlier ones because of fond memories.

https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6509-how-old-are-you

GameFaqs omited a picture of the NES. The system that they included in their little infographic when users chose their picks.

They literally ommited the most important thing fin the history of gaming.

Mario 1 is there so the NES launching in the same year is obvious to anyone who remotely cared about the NES in the first place.

The final boss of the first game in this collection is notorious for being one of the toughest bosses ever created. Have fun.

The hell?

He's not even the hardest "final boss" in Ys Book I & II!

Did they even play the version of Ys I and II they ranked or did they base that off the Chronicles remakes?

Illusion of Gaia is not an RPG unless Zelda is too. No experience points, levels, or grinding; no customization; certainly no actual "role-playing;" and enemies are fought pretty much like in Zelda. Only RPG-ish things its got are explicit HP/Attack/Defense stats that can increase.

It's weird. Most people seem to automatically sort anything remotely-like Zelda into the RPG bin without even thinking about it but are deadset against doing so to Zelda itself.

So do people think God of War is still legit on gamefaqs in 2017? I have my doubts. Like, "Phoenix Wright could be 2005's 3rd-strongest game at this point" doubts. God of War doesn't feel like a very gamefaqs-y kind of game, it's out of the peak nostalgia zone and doesn't have a major gamefaqs-approved franchise to fall back on, Kratos looked dreadful in 2013 (https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5249-character-battle-ix-division-9-round-2-mega-man-vs-kratos-vs) and while God of War missing the 2015 bracket isn't completely damning it's certainly not a good sign. (DDJ's unofficial THE LIST from 2014 suggests it probably wouldn't have had enough nominations to make the bracket even if SBAllen had just picked the top 128 most nominated games.)

Majora's Mask got a lot of criticism when it was released too.

Pokemon RSE maybe could have been better but that series' decline mostly wasn't its fault. I think Pokemon as a fad was already in serious decline by the time Crystal came out, mostly just due to running its course. (And while Crystal's not to blame either, I don't think it did much of anything to justify its existence to casual fans. A lot of the Pikachu stuff in Yellow looks pretty silly today but it was a clear and instantly noticeable difference from Red and Blue.)

https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/975-north-division-round-2-pikachu-vs-cloud-strife was a big blowout in 2002 for a reason. That wasn't on RSE.

Also if we're talking "franchise decline in the early 2000's?" Mario Sunshine in 2002.

I'm say the character that looks the most absurdly overrated there is Lenneth.

Lenneth Valkyrie -- 25.17488512

I don't think the main of Valkyrie Profile has any short whatsoever against the main of, say, Xenogears, but she's projected to almost double Fei.

Can see how it happened. She got ridiculously good luck in drawing that night match against WCC and Claptrap. Even beyond that, though...Some others in her ninepack:

Zero (Mega Man X) -- 34.99
Rikku -- 28.943728
Weighted Companion Cube -- 28.607824
Claptrap -- 26.06744923

I could maybe sort of buy Claptrap being above the fodder-line in 2013 given Borderland 2's 2012 GOTY win (though doing well there seemed not to help the Xenoblade crew) but that's by way too much, Cuba's gonna Cube so I dunno, Rikku looks suspiciously high, and uh, wow Zero looks extremely suspicious. How'd you get Zero's value?

Now don’t get me wrong – Super Mario World has somehow replaced Mario 3 in recent years as the de facto 2d Mario game. It’s always been strange to me how subtle that shift was. Ask the Mario 3 vs. Mario World question in 2000 and there’s no question that Mario 3 wins out. But as people get older, Mario World’s addition of Yoshi, the nonlinear world map, ghost houses, star road, switch blocks, etc became the standard. I’m not at all interested in getting into a Mario 3 vs. Mario World debate – that horse has been beaten to death – but I’m pretty interested in how that shift occurred. I can’t think of too many other examples where one game in a series usurped the title from another so many years later.

For other games that quietly rose a lot within their series, there's Majora's Mask and Final Fantasy IX.

Ys I and II were originally released on some weird Japanese computer in 1987 and 1988 and then got like a hundred ports and remakes. The ones released in the west were Ys I on the Master System in 1988 (there is no Ys II for Master System), Ys Book I & II on Turbo CD in 1990 (probably the most influential version on western gamers but since it was on Turbo CD there were pretty hard limits to how popular it could be; it's available on Virtual Console), and the similar-to-each-other-but-not-identical modern remakes of Ys I & II on PC, PSP, and DS in the 2010s (the PC version is probably best of the modern ones, you can get it on Steam).

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys was originally released on some weird Japanese computer in 1989 and then got console versions that got released in the west on SNES, Genesis, and Turbo CD in 1991. All of them have some issues and the game is kind of divisive in general but the SNES version is probably the worst of the three. Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a remake that made some pretty extreme changes but is in general much better than any version of Wanderers from Ys; it's available on Steam and PSP.

Ys IV: Mask of the Sun on SNES and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys on Turbo CD (both in 1993) are totally different games made by different developers (neither of which was the original developer of the first three games; they were having some financial problems at the time or something) that share soundtracks and are built from the same basic character/plot/setting/premise outline but their different developers went in different directions from there. Neither came out in the West but both have translation patches now and The Dawn of Ys is much better. The Vita game Ys: Memories of Celceta isn't a remake of either by my understanding but is a new game made by the original developer, who has of course declared that it is the canonical version of Ys IV; it got a western release.

Ys V came out on SNES in 1995. No western release, but there is a translation patch.

And then the series went dead for like 8 years until Ys VI (aside from continued rehashes of Ys I and II) and generally got consistent western releases from that point on.
