The City Council has voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day as an official Los Angeles holiday.

Councilmembers voted 14-1 to make the second Monday in October a day to commemorate indigenous, aboriginal and native people. It will be a paid holiday for city employees.

Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, a member of the Wyandotte Nation tribe, pushed for the switch. Some activists view Christopher Columbus as a symbol of genocide for native peoples.

Councilman Joe Buscaino was the lone "no" vote on Wednesday. He sided with Italian-Americans, who view Columbus Day as a celebration of their national heritage.

Los Angeles joins San Francisco and several other cities nationwide in honoring native Americans in lieu of Columbus.

He was also quite bold and did something no one in history had ever really done before. Gone to America and stayed.

He also died over 500 years ago and probably only interacted with a few Indian tribes that don't even constitute 1% of all the tribes and nations out there. Why do people treat him as if he murdered every Indian he saw with his own hands last week?

A 5 year old child would have done the same thing. It wasn't the European's fault that the Indians had no immunity. Sad to say, but contact between Europe and the Americas was probably inevitable, which meant the deaths of millions of Indians was inevitable. It didn't matter who came.

He basically oversaw the genocide of native people where ever he went, not to mention he basically started the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Also even in his own time he was noted for being cruel. It's not some revisionist history.

Where's the evidence that Columbus intentionally sought to destroy Native American populations that he encountered?

Do you have a source that shows Columbus started the Atlantic Slave Trade in any meaningful sense?

Also yes, he was brutal, but lots of people in history that we honor are brutal men. Look at Sherman who set about to destroy the state of Georgia, or Teddy Roosevelt, who glorified killing other men. And these are people from relatively recent history. Columbus is from the Middle Ages. It's been 500 years.

He wrote back to the king of Spain that the Taino Indians were perfect slave material. One of his firsts acts upon encountering a native woman was to invite her onto his ship and try to force her to have sex with his men. After she resisted he beat her mercilessly until the fight went out of her, then passed her around to his crew. This is all available with only a cursory glance at his own writings about his encounters once he discovered the new world.

Seafaring technology didn't improve because of Columbus. Many more explorers made actual discovers surrounding the New World other than merely being the first to report back. What Columbus "accomplished" would have easily been accomplished by someone else with enough time.

Columbus sits right at the precipice of either era. It's perfectly valid to say he is from the Late Middle Ages or the Renaissance period.

Ohhh no! You can't say that! He was basically the devil himself! 500 years ago doesn't mean anything! Sure I like living in America but it could have been done differently.. if only someone else discovered it! Maybe or maybe not I'd even be alive, it doesn't matter!
