There are really two core principles at play here. Theres giving people a voice, so that people can express their opinions. Then, theres keeping the community safe, which I think is really important. Were not gonna let people plan violence or attack each other or do bad things. Within this, those principles have real trade-offs and real tug on each other. In this case, we feel like our responsibility is to prevent hoaxes from going viral and being widely distributed.

The approach that weve taken to false news is not to say, you cant say something wrong on the internet. I think that that would be too extreme. Everyone gets things wrong, and if we were taking down peoples accounts when they got a few things wrong, then that would be a hard world for giving people a voice and saying that you care about that. But at the same time, I think that we have a responsibility to, when you look at if you look at the top hundred things that are going viral or getting distribution on Facebook within any given day, I do think we have a responsibility to make sure that those arent hoaxes and blatant misinformation.

Thats the approach that weve taken. We look at the things that are getting the most distribution. If people have flag them as potential hoaxes, we send those to fact-checkers who are all well reputable and have followed standard principles for fact checking, and if those fact checkers say that it is provably false, then we will significantly reduce the distribution of that content, and if someone-

So, you move them down the line rather than get rid of them?

Yeah, in News Feed.

Why dont you wanna just say get off our platform?

Look, as abhorrent as some of this content can be, I do think that it gets down to this principle of giving people a voice.

Let me give you an example of where we would take it down. In Myanmar or Sri Lanka, where theres a history of sectarian violence, similar to the tradition in the U.S. where you cant go into a movie theater and yell Fire! because that creates an imminent harm.

The principles that we have on what we remove from the service are: If its going to result in real harm, real physical harm, or if youre attacking individuals, then that content shouldnt be on the platform. Theres a lot of categories of that that we can get into, but then theres broad debate.

Okay. Sandy Hook didnt happen is not a debate. It is false. You cant just take that down?

I agree that it is false.

I also think that going to someone who is a victim of Sandy Hook and telling them, Hey, no, youre a liar that is harassment, and we actually will take that down. But overall, lets take this whole closer to home...

Im Jewish, and theres a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened.

I find that deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I dont believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I dont think that theyre intentionally getting it wrong, but I think-

In the case of the Holocaust deniers, they might be, but go ahead.

Its hard to impugn intent and to understand the intent. I just think, as abhorrent as some of those examples are, I think the reality is also that I get things wrong when I speak publicly. Im sure you do. Im sure a lot of leaders and public figures we respect do too, and I just dont think that it is the right thing to say, Were going to take someone off the platform if they get things wrong, even multiple times.

What we will do is well say, Okay, you have your page, and if youre not trying to organize harm against someone, or attacking someone, then you can put up that content on your page, even if people might disagree with it or find it offensive.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/17/climate/india-heat-wave-summer.html
Extreme heat can kill, as it did by the dozens in Pakistan in May. But as many of South Asias already-scorching cities get even hotter, scientists and economists are warning of a quieter, more far-reaching danger: Extreme heat is devastating the health and livelihoods of tens of millions more.

If global greenhouse gas emissions continue at their current pace, they say, heat and humidity levels could become unbearable, especially for the poor.

It is already making them poorer and sicker. Like the Kolkata street vendor who squats on his haunches from fatigue and nausea. Like the woman who sells water to tourists in Delhi and passes out from heatstroke at least once each summer. Like the women and men with fever and headaches who fill emergency rooms. Like the outdoor workers who become so weak or so sick that they routinely miss days of work, and their daily wages.

These cities are going to become unlivable unless urban governments put in systems of dealing with this phenomenon and make people aware, said Sujata Saunik, who served as a senior official in the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs and is now a fellow at the Harvard University School of Public Health. Its a major public health challenge.

Indeed, a recent analysis of climate trends in several of South Asias biggest cities found that if current warming trends continued, by the end of the century, wet bulb temperatures a measure of heat and humidity that can indicate the point when the body can no longer cool itself would be so high that people directly exposed for six hours or more would not survive.

In many places, heat only magnifies the more thorny urban problems, including a shortage of basic services, like electricity and water.
For the countrys National Disaster Management Agency, alarm bells rang after a heat wave struck the normally hot city of Ahmedabad, in western India, in May, 2010, and temperatures soared to 118 degrees Fahrenheit, or 48 Celsius: It resulted in a 43 percent increase in mortality, compared to the same period in previous years, a study by public health researchers found.

Since then, in some places, local governments, aided by the Natural Resources Defense Council, an advocacy group, have put in place simple measures. In Ahmedabad, for instance, city-funded vans distribute free water during the hottest months. In the eastern coastal city of Bhubaneswar, parks are kept open in afternoons so outdoor workers can sit in the shade. Occasionally, elected officials post heat safety tips on social media. Some cities that had felled trees for construction projects are busy trying to plant new ones.

The science is unequivocally worrying. Across the region, a recent World Bank report concluded, rising temperatures could diminish the living standards of 800 million people.

Worldwide, among the 100 most populous cities where summer highs are expected to reach at least 95 degrees Fahrenheit by 2050, according to estimates by the Urban Climate Change Research Network, 24 are in India.

Rohit Magotra, deputy director of Integrated Research for Action and Development, is trying to help the capital, Delhi, develop a plan to respond to the new danger. The first step is to quantify its human toll.

Heat goes unreported and underreported. They take it for granted, Mr. Magotra said. Its a silent killer.

I've always thought The Tyger, by William Blake, was a very metal poem

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

TUCKER CARLSON: I don't think Russia is our close friend or anything like that. I think of course they try to interfere in our affairs. They have for a long time. Many countries do. Some more successfully than Russia, like Mexico, which is routinely interfering in our elections by packing our electorate. So those are all concerns.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2018/07/16/anthony-bourdain-slammed-hillary-clinton-and-gropey- disgusting-bill-clinton-in-newly-released-interview.html

In an interview, published more than a month after his death, Anthony Bourdain called former President Bill Clinton a gropey, grabby disgusting person and slammed the Clintons for how they handled the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

The celebrity chef and Parts Unknown host, who hanged himself in a French hotel in June, sat down with journalist Maria Bustillos from the magazine Popula before his death. The sit-down was published on Sunday.

Bourdain, one of the most outspoken supporters of the #MeToo movement, told the magazine it was shameful how the Clintons handled the scandal involving Lewinsky.

Bill Clinton, look, the bimbo eruptionsit was f---ing monstrous. That would not have flown today, Bourdain said about the scandal. [Bill Clinton is] a piece of s---. Entitled, rapey, gropey, grabby, disgusting, and the way that he and she [Hillary] destroyed these women and the way that everyone went along, and, and are blind to this!

The 61-year-old went on to say it was unforgivable the way the couple had shut down the accusers.

The way they efficiently dismantled, destroyed, and shamelessly discredited these women for speaking their truth, he said.

When asked if Clinton should have been kicked out of the office, Bourdain said no.

I would look at this way. I would never under any circumstances vote for Bill Clinton today, Bourdain told the magazine. But I think impeaching the guy over Lewinsky was ridiculous. Particularly given today.

He added, It was the shaming, discrediting, undermining the women that made both of them unsuitable for any future endeavors. I dont think they shouldve pulled him from office.

Bourdain also said he was frustrated by Hillary Clinton's reaction to the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, but when he tweeted as such, he said his words were twisted.

I was really disappointed with the statement. But even by expressing that, the way that my comment was turned, very neatlysuddenly I wasnt expressing disappointment in her statement; I was blaming her for Harvey Weinsteins crimes. The way that turned very nicely was a good bit of artistry and deeply frightening to me and really, really he said.

When speaking about Weinstein, the celebrity chef detailed how he wants the film producer to die.

My theory of how he goes is, uh, hes brushing his teeth in a bathroom, hes naked in his famous bathrobe, which is flapping open, hes holding his cell phone in one hand because you never know who on the Weinstein board has betrayed him recently, and hes brushing his teeth, Bourdain said.

Bourdain added that he imagines Weinstein getting a massive f---ing stroke, before falling backwards into a bathtub.

He finds himself, um, with his robe open feet sticking out of the tub, and in his last moments of consciousness as he scrolls through his contacts list trying to figure out who he can call, who will actually answer the phone, the celebrity chef said.

And he dies that way, knowing that no one will help him and that he is not looking his finest at time of death, Bourdain said.

"linked to the NRA"

in what way?

Torshin and Butina are both passionate defenders of gun owners rights. Both are lifetime members of the NRA (the only two Russians he knew to be lifetime members, Torshin once tweeted). The two attended the NRAs annual meeting in 2014 as a special guests of then-NRA president David Keene.

We are a young organization. We are three years old. And we invited David Keene. He made a speech at our annual meeting. And so its like an answer from one side, Butina told Townhall. The next side is the life member of our organization. He is our Russian senator. His name is Senator Alexander Torshin. He is a life member of NRA too, and hes usually a participant of such events, and every annual meeting of NRA. But now the situation between (our) two countries is very difficult. And we have to go here together with Senator Torshin. He is a great gun lover, he supports our organization and hes a friend of the NRA.
...
Despite his ties to Russia, Torshin is still welcome in conservative circles. In May 2016, he returned to the NRAs annual convention and shared a dinner table with Donald Trump Jr., according to the same Bloomberg report.

Related: this article about Butina from February 2017

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-kremlin-and-gop-have-a-new-friendand-boy-does-she-love-guns

Just a few years ago, Maria Butina owned a furniture store in Siberia. Now shes wheeling and dealing with D.C. think-tankers, Republican strategists, and a Russian bank chief with alleged mob connections.

Depending on the audience, Butina has presented herself as a Russian central bank staffer, a leading gun rights advocate, a representative of the Russian Federation, a Washington, D.C., graduate student, a journalist, and a connection between Team Trump and Russia. She used each role to help her gain more high-level contacts in the nations capital.

Its another chapter in whats becoming a familiar story in Washington: Kremlin-connected operators building bridges to the GOP.

Ever since U.S. intelligence services concluded that Russia was meddling in the American presidential elections, Team Trumps ties to Russia have been highly scrutinized. The presidents national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned because he misled his bosses about his contacts with the Russian government; and his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, also resigned due to questions about his relationship with Russia.

Butinas relationships, formed with Washingtons conservative society through her fierce advocacy for firearmsone conference described her as the public face of gun rights in the Russian Federationprovide a previously unreported link between the Russian government and the Republican Party.

Two of Butinas friendships in particular have raised eyebrows. She started a business with Paul Erickson, a decades-long Republican Party activist. And she served as a special assistant to the deputy governor of Russias central bank, Alexander Torshin, a former Russian senator belonging to Vladimir Putins political party with alleged ties to the Russian mob world.

On Nov. 12, 2016, shortly after the election of President Donald Trump, Butina held a birthday party at Cafe Deluxe near American University, where she attends graduate school classes.

The event was a costume party attended by Trump campaign aides and Erickson, who told guests that he was on the Trump presidential transition team. She dressed as Russian Empress Alexandra while Erickson was dressed as Rasputin.

As chilled vodka flowed through an ice sculpturea bottle imprinted with the Soviet hammer and sickleshe took some time to brag. She brazenly claimed that she had been part of the Trump campaigns communications with Russia, two individuals who were present said. On other occasions, in one of her graduate classes, she repeated this claim.

She said so in my class. And she said so several times in the last semester, Svetlana Savranskaya, Butinas former American University professor and a staffer at the National Security Archive, told The Daily Beast. She is a former journalist, so she keeps up her connections in Russia. And she also works and [claims to] keep connections with a member of the Russian Duma.

Erickson and Butina have been seen in public frequently, at the invitation-only Freedom Ball after Trumps inauguration; and holding court at Russia House, a Russian-themed bar in Washington, D.C.s Dupont Circle. At one such gathering in the fall of 2016 Erickson bragged that he was advising the Trump transition team, according to two sources who were present; he is also said to have told a story about introducing Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47, to former NRA president David Keene. (Kalashnikov allegedly inspired the creation of The Right to Bear Arms, Butinas gun rights group.)
