I can't see physical game shops surviving much longer, outside of independent specialists that focus on collectables/imports etc

My understanding is that the chain was up for sale

which probably means it'll be eaten up by some venture capital firm that saddles it with unrealistic debt and squeezes it until it is dead.

At this rate, every other place sells games, and usually at a more affordable price point. Their used games are legitimately more expensive than brand new copies at many other places. That's without even getting into digital copies, where you don't have to worry about something being sold out.

I think they recognize this and are trying to shift their focus towards selling collectibles, but I don't know if it's going to be enough without drastically changing their business model.

The fact that they are selling preowned systems for $10 less than brand new and the fact that theyre giving us less than a dollar for preowned games leads me to believe that they see the writing on the wall and want to put every dime in the register that they can (hence the firm prices).

That's another issue too. I'm seeing used games that came out years ago still selling for $57.

GameStop makes most of their money off of used games, but their used games are only like $3 less than a brand new copy that is guaranteed to work lmao and even then, I can go on Amazon and find a brand new copy even cheaper than that.

Im serious. Theres a calculator on their webpage where you can search for a game or system and it will tell you the value for it. Most of the stuff I was pricing (PS4 stuff) was less than $2 per game (sometimes less than $1, even).

When I got my Switch, I noticed that every preowned game was like $57 and the new ones were $60.

When i bought GTA V for the 360, i went to Wal-Mart to get it brand new for $20, gamestop wanted $20 for used...

Black Ops II was $25 for used but Walmart had it new for $20..

I don't go to Gamestop unless absolutely necessary.

This combined with the fact that I bought two discs from them that didnt work, horrible customer service, and the fact that they knowingly sell botched used hardware thats doomed to fail soon after you plug it in.

I won't ever buy a console from them after i bought a 360 and had it red ring of death on me about a week after i bought it.

Also funny enough it's pretty evident that their Canadian wing (still EB Games) is doing way better, but that's expected as pretty much every retailer is doing better in Canada lol.

Your assuming they'll sell. A new fallout game is only a few months away, there's no reason to assume they'll be able to move all these units they have already. Plus fallout 4 goty edition has been going on sale for 30 or less pretty consistently lately, making it less likely the basic vanilla version will sell.

And we "have" EB Games but it's just Gamestop Canada. They never got around to rebranding up here.

Not actually accurate. Just a quick search of a couple games:

God of War gets you $26. Ultra Sun gets you $18. Yakuza 6 gets you $20. Octopath gets you $30.

On average you get ~50 of the value by trading games in. Yeah the dude who posted Fallout 4 giving you less than $10 sounds low right? But then you realize Fallout 4 has dropped to less than $20 new now, so what do you expect them to give you?

I haven't stepped foot in a gamestop in years but at least do some homework before you make completely untrue comments like that.
