If you can't accept it in your family, you don't actually accept it in anyone else. You're just able to pretend it doesn't exist elsewhere, and tolerate it that way.

Exactly.

Tolerance is not equal to acceptance.

I just find it odd my grandma's best friend was a gay dude, and she was also friends with his partner, but yet she acted like it was such sin for a family member. but I guess that boils down to her Christianity. love thy neighbor, don't pass judgement etc. but she didn't want her close family to be these supposed sinners cause I guess in her mind she taught them better.

It may be surprising to some, but the fact is, many people do feel this way, deep down.

People tolerate things they don't necessarily agree with personally.

And they can be friends with gays but still be unaccepting of them within their private space (family). This is because they view this as a separate issue and does not have a place in their lives privately. Simply put: "It's okay if it doesn't happen in my backyard."

I actually don't know how she felt about more distant relatives, i've only seen that behavior with close family members, but she was that way on more than one issue as I earlier posted about her being supportive of my moms teen and pregnant friends but lost her shit when my mom got pregnant at 20 but was unmarried.

as I said I feel it was her Christianity which does basically boil down to what you said about not in my backyard

Yup. That's right. She was upset because it happened to her daughter. Her daughter's friends and their "misfortunes" are sad but not her concern so while she will sympathise with them, in the end, she won't care.

It's an emotional way to reach out to people and their own personal attempt to help them in their own way.

It's their personal way to reach out to the faceless mass representing good people they want to exist, to help the concept of good people being hurt.

Everybody passively hopes that good people won't be hurt for no reason, it doesn't need saying and certainly doesn't make you a good person for not wanting people to pointlessly die for nothing.

Alexandra_Trent posted...
They can choose to just accept the gesture for what it really is: a kind and thoughtful gesture.

Self-aggrandizing is very unchristian, to imply your wish should defend people you don't even know against God's will places far too much importance on God's several billion subjects.

What they do is self-affirmation that there is a God who won't let good people like themselves die pointlessly like they fear. All their prayers are saying is "Only bad people will be killed by God's will and I'm a good person so if that ever happened to me, I shouldn't die!".

What?

No...As a Christian, I do not think this way at all! But anyway, I do undestand where you're coming from. Many use religion to further their agenda. And many are confused about their own religion or miss its true and core teachings.

I'm not saying all Christians are this or that. What I'm saying is that prayers are just a hopeful wish (to the Almighty) that things be all right. No more and no less. Now if a Christian continues on and says that those who are unfortunate deserve what they get (because they are unbelievers) then that's wrong. I too am against people- religious zealots- who are very judgmental who think themselves the chosen ones and everyone else is unworthy. Subscribing to a religion does not make one worthy of God's grace or mercy.

Only God can judge. Not us. Not me and not them.

Prayers, as a sentiment, are a good thing. They mean no harm.

This, really. Don't know why everyone is thinking of themselves as super-genius by saying prayers aren't gonna help them or build a house of them.

It's not the same thing though. Saying good luck to somebody is letting them know you personally have good intent for them and back them. A prayer in the general direction of a couple states is not only completely impersonal, it's also a sick joke for religious people to hope for your protection against an act of God.

Completely untrue.

True prayer is powerful to the believers and to the truly devoted. It is very personal. It's an emotional way to reach out to people and their own personal attempt to help them in their own way. It has nothing to do with the receivers of the prayers of being unbelievers.

People can believe whatever they want to believe. Here, intention is key. And I believe that if their prayers are true and their hearts are in the right place, there's no cause for offence. They can choose to just accept the gesture for what it really is: a kind and thoughtful gesture. Or they can twist it into something vile (although I wish people wouldn't....The world can be a kinder place if only people were less cynical).

There really isn't a need to read more into these things. They meant well. That's all there is to it.

One shouldn't be so cynical about others' beliefs. More often, people demonstrate good gestures and thats more than enough.

When people die, others offer their condolences. Is this helpful at all too? By your logic, you shouldn't accept these condolences as they aren't REALLY PHYSICALLY helpful. But that's not the point is it? The point is that these people reached out and offered their emotional support.

That's all there is to it.

I don't think you need to "conform" to everything; most especially with things that you highly disagree with.

However, as with EVERYTHING ELSE, compromise or finding middle ground without antagonising others or being passive-agressive is necessary.

No man is an island. Like it or not, we need each other. You don't need to bend over backwards for others to get them to like you. You need to be genuine and be yourself. But that being said, if you have problems in how you communicate (you are rude, tactless, insincere etc etc), then you need to work on those problems first.

Try to be patient with others and emphatise with them rather than being judgmental. If people are rude to you, assert yourself without being aggressive and try to put yourself in their shoes.

Understanding others and yourself is vital for any sort of relationship.

Exactly.

People always ask for equality and respect. But that goes both ways.

She (and every person) should respect others if they want respect. Respect the place (it's a family place), respect the people in there and don't do things that attract negative attention or things that disrupt harmony.

People these days are too self-centered. It's always about I, ME or MYSELF.

Mine still are. Hehe.

I'm 33 and my parents are 52 and 53 (mum and dad). We're very close and talk daily.

My dad still gets excited over playing video games or movie nights while my mum and I enjoy Saturday mornings together for breakfast and shopping.

They can get overbearing at times but I know that it's just their way of showing they love and care for me. And it's their way of still trying to get my attention because as kids age, their priorities change. Relationship dynamics can change. So my parents want to preserve some of that sentimentality from my childhood.

And for that effort, I can't fault them. :)

No, because outside the rare cases where someone is overweight due to a medical condition or medication side-effect, it is unhealthy and it is treatable. I don't think they should be mocked or insulted or shamed for it, because I don't think anyone deserves to suffer that simply for physical appearance, but at the same time it should not be normalized - I always cringe when I see the plus-sized beauty contests, with the contestants going on and on about how "being big can be beautiful" - maybe so, but that doesn't mean it should be encouraged.
