RoboDunk (XSX)

A challenging rogue-like 2v2 arcade basketball game featuring stop-motion, LEGO-like robot characters. You can only score from dunking, and there's a big risk/reward point system where you can hold the jump button to jump higher and score more points for your dunk, but it leaves you vulnerable to getting attacked, and thus losing the ball.

I was able to beat the tournament (15 matches) on my first attempt, so I'm not sure how this all plays out, but I think that while each run has you start with base stats and no permanent (for that run) abilities, you can pay to unlock more ability options (which are featured as both end-match permanent abilties or the in-game temporary abilities that they give out for each period and go away at the conclusion of the match. That whole map abilties was huge, so I'm assuming that one I buy them, they will be unlocked for the current and future runs You an also buy different robots with their own base stats and strengths that I assume works the same way. I beat it with Blasto and Devil as my team, but I did purchase a third robot, and I think money carries over, so I may buy a fourth type and roll with the new guys in my next run.

I will say that the challenge both seems fair and unfair. I think it's natural for robots to have better reaction times and just being more capable as the tournament goes on along with having higher stats and more abilities, but sometimes they seem ridiculously good in all facets of the game. Also, these courts have randomized, I think, hazards (like turrets and tornados), and I think most of them suck, not to mention some seem to target me more than the AI.

Checkerboard Chase is easily the best thing about this game, and I'm sad that multiple people here have played Kirby 64 and are completely unaware of its existence

Sea of Stars (XSX)

I played this when it came out and played about a quarter of it before deciding to jump off thinking that it was fun enough, but not to the level that I would want to commit 20+ more hours to.

I came back when I wanted a game to play while I was listening to stuff, and t my opinion of it is less than it was before. It evolved a little bit in the exploration/side activities (which might be the highlights of the game), but the combat system needed to but wasn't. It's a standard turn-based with timed attacks/defends with the opportunity to disrupt enemy special attacks. If standard battles didn't take so long than games with similar systems like the various Mario-based ones, or if there was something resembling character builds or at least more attack variety, I probably wouldn't be so down on it, but that's not the game it was.

What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is usually on the 25th
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will obviously think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every featured game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a featured game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month
- You also have the option of supporting 1 game each month. Your only limitation is that you can't support your own nomination

+ Despite a relatively large starter turnover (lost six starters from last season), they managed to have the league's best record at 12-4
+ After fielding one of the league's bottom five offenses through the first four weeks, they made adjustments (including the tough decision to IR Raheem Mostert and sign Ezekiel Elliot) to finish with a Top 10 unit and go 10-2 from that point.

- Part of the reason why they had to say goodbye to many starters was to re-sign OT Alejandro Villanueva, and he rewarded the Pumpkins with 37 blocks vs 7 sacks allowed.

Comeback Player of the Year

Bears QB Teddy Bridgwater

Teddy missed all of last season due to injury, and there just wasn't a lot of hope for this offense entering the season. One of many players who balled on offense for Chicago, Bridgewater had an 80.5 passer rating while completing 62% (4th in the league) of his passes and having 11.9 yards per completion (2468 yards on 207 completions).

Dolphins WR A.J. Green

Injuries and lackluster QB play have prevented Green from reaching the career statistical heights that the was on a trajectory for after a strong start to his career. Across 21 games played the previous two seasons, he had just 1123 receiving yards (53.4 yards per game). Playing in his most games (14) since S16, Green had the second most receptions (91) and yards (1189) while recording a new high in TDs (14) as his play helped the Dolphins return to offensive prominence (3rd).

Browns RT Ronnie Stanley

Stanley has played in just 9 combined games the previous two seasons, including mustering to suit up twice in S20. Starting all 16 games for the first time since he was a rookie, Stanley finished tied for fourth in blocks in the league (73) while maintaining a great ratio (73:8), his best mark when starting double digit games in a season.

Bills LE Terrence Fede

Fede was out of football last season and in his five seasons playing for the Falcons and Vikings, he averaged a modest 20 tackles and six sacks a season, going no higher than 25 and 8 respectively in those categories. Not the choie of Bills management, Fede had a career season in Buffalo with 30 tackles and 11 sacks, the latter figure being five more than any other Bill.

Jaguars LOLB Dante Fowler

Fowler lost all of last season due to injury, and before that, he was never a statistical juggernaut, especially after MLB Vontaze Burfict was signed to be the star of the LB group. Starting all 16 games, he had his most well-rounded statline in his career, including some career lines as he posted 113 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 INTs, 1 FF, and 3 FRs.
