..you can't really believe that any major sort of shutdown would have happened after we completely failed to do that in the first two reported weeks of the outbreak, can you? (spoiler alert: covid was already here the day after someone caught it in China. that's just how international travel and asymptomatic contagious diseases work). I had the first real strain of covid in late january 2020, while the trump admin was still pretending it was just the "china virus"

but there's a reason I never tested positive until a year and a half later even though I worked right near dozens of infected people with inadequate PPE, because I had it before the tests were even available.

the unfortunate reality of our economy is that it's built on a house of cards, and if the little cogs take a week or two off to make sure they don't die of an easily preventable disease, the rich people might have to delay buying their newest house.

I was brought up in a religious household, but I dropped that stuff in my teenage years. Too many things didn't make sense.
* Why does black church service last for 4 to 6 hours?
* Why did so many churches I went to in Texas have no AC in the summer? Those little fans don't help.
* And why did the pastors at those churches always have such nice cars and houses? They could afford to pay for AC for the church.
* Why does god need money?
* Why does the church ask for 10% of everyone's income?
* Why did the pastor of a church my mom stopped going to get visibly angry when she wouldn't commit to going back?

And that's not even starting on the stuff that doesn't make sense in the bible or the hypocrisy I've seen from religious people.

my job is one of the very rare salary jobs that actually pays extra if you work more than 40 hours in a week, so I usually make ~$4800/mo after taxes.

other than that, electricity is less than 100/mo and the only other utility I pay for is heating oil which was only about $500 for the whole winter this year(thanks, global warming).

other than that I pay less than 1k/mo in bills including student loans, and my car will be fully paid off in a few months.

if I ever have to move I'll be screwed because I don't have the cash for that, but I like my apartment and landlords so I won't be moving unless I have to

Agreed. No way you can comfortable afford a $300k home on just $50k a year. I read somewhere that a decent rule of thumb for comfortable affordability is to look at a home that is about 2.5x-3x the household income. So at the top end, you're looking at a $150k home which really doesn't exist for all practical purposes.

1.I really liked Jericho. My wife and I never missed an episode. The second season was very rushed, but the first was great pulpy TV.

2.The letter campaign that saved Star Trek the original series for a third season is the grandfather of all such campaigns, although the Nuts campaign for Jericho was pretty inspired.

I really liked Jericho. Honestly, I think its ratings issues might be the best thing to ever happen to it in a way, though; it got them to hurry up through the folksy soap opera stuff that was much less interesting and focus on the real meat of the show. The second half of the first season on is fantastic television.

oh yeah it was way better after the midseason break. but season 2 was so short :(
