Personally, I'm just going to pull until I get a 5-star and am reasonably threatening pity again. I was absolutely enraptured by it at the time. I will concede it's not actually that good compared to its successors, but if we consider the legacy of a game, this one needs to be top 10. 12 - All-timer arcade port, would also be in my top 10. 10 - I prefer 3...oh hey. 9 - A game everyone needs to play once, just for the pop culture. 9 is about right. 6 - Eh, this ain't the Gameboy. NES Tetris is kinda whatever by comparison. But it's still Tetris. 5 - OG Zelda was a great game...for other people. But not for me. My first Zelda for real was Link's Awakening, and eventually I learned to play LTTP rather than getting bodied by green guards in the castle, but I've never been able to play NES Zelda. 4 - Best NES Dragon Warrior by a landslide. Good choice. 1 - Surprised to see at #1. Not surprised to see in the top 5. Perfectly reasonable top pick. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

I should probably revisit it, but I struggle to even convince myself to play SM, despite playing a couple dozen metroidvanias in the last few years. 45 - another game I prefered to simply watch someone else play. 44 - actually good 43 - I always thought this was kinda overrated 36 - This was another one of those "everyone in 1987 has played it" games that everyone had basically forgotten about by 1988. As a kid, I didn't know what I was doing, so I didn't enjoy this. It was playable with the multitap, though. 68 - The game way more popular than it probably had a right to be, but it represents everything about old school racing games. 58 - Always felt like a tough game. No surprise when it's an arcade port. All those overhead shooter games were like that. 53 - No nostalgia repping here. 52 - Glug! You have drunk tar. Have played on Not-NES (mostly arcade): 72, 71, 69, 64, 60, 59, 55 Never heard of Arkista's Ring. Gonna go look that one up. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

At the top was obviously SMB/DH. But there were other games I could usually count on someone to have, or at least be more likely to have before seeing obscure choices, and Ice Hockey ranks fairly high on that list. Not as high as Rad Racer, which I swear everyone had for some reason, but above most of the other sports titles. I did a few quick searches on her the day this topic went up, found out very little beyond the band she'd been in, and figured that was all I really needed to know. I also disagree with that person's argument that it sounds like she hired a "PR Crisis Team" because she only commented on having supported Masterson prior to his trial, or that Linkin Park didn't properly "vet" her even though they'd apparently known her for like 8 months prior. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

Probably should be higher, but there's also not much there. 95 - game that tried to do a lot, but simply isn't fun. It's also pretty hard. At least for kids, anyway. 92 - I know I played Double Dribble, but I have very little memory of it. 90 - Rightfully deserves bottom quartile placement. Very basic game, but functional game. I assume Ice Hockey will do a little better. 87 - My friend rented this without the manual, and we had -NO- idea what we were doing. We just walked around beating guys up, but never made any real progress because we didn't know what the goal was. 85 - I watched some adults playing this and they seemed like they were enjoying themselves. This is what people did before there was Goldeneye multiplayer, ig. 78 - okay, maybe Ice Hockey won't do that well. Blades of Steel was always known for the break-out fights. 77 - OG Mario Bros was always just a basic arcade game, a la Joust. They've built a legacy under that brand, and asking them to change is asking people to go "oh hey you know Linkin Park? Now they're ____." Makes it sound like a side project, or like they had to for legal reasons, or something. And a decent number of people won't get that memo the way they would if they hear "Hey, Linkin Park's back together with a new singer." --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

That way, instead of it being find a horribly weak team and pick its opponent each week, you're...finding an impressive team and watching it maul everyone? That seems uncharitable. There's at least a market for harder, more complex JRPG gameplay. Speaking for myself, I like my JRPG combat simple and direct. Adding gimmicks that restrict attack choices or force me to make multiple decisions per character action or risk not being able to move close enough to the enemies is not a style I enjoy. I played through both Original Sin games, and having done so, I decided I basically have no interest to return to that and play BG3. Not that mainline FF could ever fully turn into a game like BG. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

WoW was heavily influenced by Everquest, and it's boom can largely be attributed to learning from what Everquest did wrong. I played EverQuest. My old roommate jumped into FFXI. I saw all I needed to watching him. XI wasn't a step forward, at a time when I was ready to leave EQ's slow-paced combat and push one real button every 30 seconds gameplay behind. WoW absolutely covered that. Tigole and Furor knew exactly what was wrong with EQ. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |

Actually I know a ton of people who low key love 13 the most so it's probably 16. There's no way it's 13. I'd argue 13 was the last culturally relevant FF, and it's "success" plus the time before 15 came out was what keeps so many from even recalling 15 and 16 exist. But even ignoring that, 13 had two direct sequels, and plenty of people know about 13, even if it's mostly to criticize the game's design. --- Only the exceptions can be exceptional. |
