The problem with nuclear power, at least in the US, is that private utilities will never run nuclear reactors safely because nuclear power plant safety is a cost that must be cut to make line go up.

This is sort of true when you look at the overall and depending on how exactly you consider nuclear waste.

In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear is the least polluting. a lot of that comes from how energy-dense it is, compared to something like solar panels which requires significantly more manufacturing/production/etc to achieve the same amount of power. The pollution of solar will drop over time as we make improvements in solar capture technology and solar panel lifespan.

But then nuclear has nuclear waste, which is a small-ish amount of, well, nearly indefinite waste. It's not really "pollution" in the sense people use the term when talking about climate change since it doesn't contribute to that. But you have to find somewhere safe to store it for extremely long periods of time or you have to build expensive facilities to recycle it.

Personally I think the world could do with a lot more nuclear power all around. every power source has its tradeoffs but I think the general perception has been skewed so much by nuclear bombs and a few historic disasters that there's a lot of needless fear around

Not to say I'm anti-solar, in fact I think we should be using solar too and continuing to research and improve it. But I think it's just important to keep in mind that just because you can go stand out on your front porch in the sun and warm up doesn't mean actual energy production from solar is completely free and clean

Im well aware that nuclear energy isnt nearly as bad as it was made out to be. I wasnt aware that there were drawbacks to solar panels other than requiring direct sunlight.

We actually have the technology and know-how to start doing it fairly quickly if we really wanted to but it's kind of a controversial subject since there hasn't been tons of research on safety, long term effects, side effects, etc. some states and countries have banned it but there's no worldwide consensus one way or the other atm

I figured that would be a hypothetical scenario at best. When I read that the eruption caused earthquakes and tsunamis resulting in around 100,000 dead, I knew the risk would be too great.

It isnt ideal, but could something like this help? I know this sounds as ridiculous as Trumps suggestion to nuke a hurricane, but I cant come up with anything else that isnt a meteor or asteroid impact that can possibly cool the earth.

Yes, we all live together. I'm not financially able to leave. Best option to remove myself is coming up soon when we relocate our business from one building to another. I'll have the option to continue renting our current space as an apartment if I want. Financially it'd be better not to, so I can start saving money again, but I am tempted just to have a space for myself.

I work in healthcare. Trump literally said he has "concepts of a plan." If there is a reduction in healthcare funding, I'm screwed. If he weakens public health with stupid policies, there's going to be a lot more sick people than the system can handle under his leadership for the second time. People will continue to struggle to afford their meds or will have to settle for alternatives that don't work as well. His tariff bullshit will actually negatively impact the economy and deporting legally naturalized citizens would put even further strain.

I don't want to dismiss TC's concerns, but he has a safety net and is mostly protected.

I really hope that I am. I know far more people have it much worse than I do. My parents and my pets might be the only ones keeping me from being unwell if you know what I mean.

I feel like if I say anything at all that I'm going to end up getting screamed at over it. It's pointless too. Mom mentioned Democrats preparing for riots if Trump lost, and claimed that Republicans didn't do anything when Biden became president. I mentioned that they raided that capitol, and snapped at me that it was all fake to make the Republicans look bad. I scoffed at her and was like "You really think that?" And she said it had been proven already.

I could see the anger in her eyes, and I know she saw it in mine. So we both just dropped it. We get along great 99.9% of the time, but when we disagree like this it becomes a huge argument for days or weeks. So I think we both made the right choice at the time, because if either of us pressed it further my life would be extra miserable at the moment.

I just don't think I'll be able to keep my mouth shut for 4 years once things go south and she starts blaming Democrats and excusing Trump. So it's probably inevitable that we'll have a shouting match at some point.

Is there anyway you can cut your parents out of your life? Are you in a similar situation where you are living with them as codependents?

My parents, as well as almost all of my extended family, are diehard Republicans (as well as diehard "Christians") and have always voted red, no matter who's running. I do my best not to talk to them about anything politics or religion-related, though it's sometimes unavoidable.

Fun fact, my father told me the other day that my grandfather is rolling in his grave because I didn't vote for Trump, so I kindly reminded him that said grandfather regularly used the hard N word to describe any black person. He also seems to think that gas and grocery prices are going to go down because of Trump, so... fuck 'em. I'm only worried about my brother at this point, as he's been trying to get on disability and this is almost certainly going to fuck him over.
