Topic | What are the three most "iconic" Zelda games? |
Paratroopa1 04/21/25 6:22:05 AM #73 | I guess also the title and overworld themes in Zelda 1 are really iconic but like, that's another situation where I'd argue the light world theme in LttP is probably the 'default' rendition of that theme in more peoples' heads, Zelda 1 does earn SOME credit here but LttP is the game that really establishes this as a baseline (the Main Zelda theme isn't so much as quoted in Zelda 2, but ever since LttP pretty much every game does at some point) |

Honestly the most iconic thing about Z1 is "It's dangerous to go alone"Yeah this is the one big thing that gives me pause, this is possibly the most well-known Zelda meme that exists, it's like Princess is in another castle levels of iconic But like, that's kinda it |

OoT > LttP > BotW > MM > WW > Z1 > TP > TotK > LA > Z2 > other stuff that isn't iconic enough to rank (I'm not bothering to include CDi Zelda in here wtf do you do with that lol)Explanations: OoT: It's #1, duh, we don't have to have a debate about this I don't think LttP: I already kinda laid it out, I think this is the oldest game that people actually think of when they think of a generic Zelda game, it really just fits the layout and structure and vibe way more than Z1 does BotW: It's BotW, it's just so enormously popular and such a huge shift in the series that it kinda bulldozes everything else MM: I actually fucked up and this should be #3 above BotW. People are absolutely NUTS for not including this in the top 4 imo, like, what is wrong with you? are you kidding me? why are people underestimating Majora's Mask for absolutely no reason? this is completely baffling to me. This game is held up as such an iconic game that it's challenging LttP for #2. I was just at a con and I saw multiple MM-related costumes and merch (less than BotW though which is why I currently have BotW higher) WW: The cel shading is pulling a lot of weight here, Toon Link's his own damn character in Smash Z1: Yeah it's still high because of how many series staples it introduces but again, honestly, how much Z1-specific art have you seen lately? How many people have you seen talk about it or write essays about it? TP: idk am I telling on myself that I don't know where to rank this game? I hate it and I don't remember anything from it and I find it hard to believe that other people remember stuff from this game but uhhhh it has Wolf Link and Midna in it so okay, I guess it's up there TotK: I have NO FUCKING IDEA what to do with this because I can't think of what's specifically iconic from it other than hot Ganondorf and making goofy ass shit with giant flaming dicks and posting it on the internet. It feels like an addendum to BotW and BotW deserves most of the credit LA: It's a little too offbeat and I don't really see a lot of memes or iconic things about this game that often but it still kinda holds a position of privilege as one of the Classic Zeldas Z2: Like I said it's more iconic than you think. The temple theme. Error. Come on Everything else: it's not iconic. Nobody remembers skyward sword. Nobody remembers the oracle games. gimme a break |

Topic | What are the three most "iconic" Zelda games? |
Paratroopa1 04/21/25 6:00:37 AM #65 | To further the point; I've been playing Zelda 1 Randomizer basically since it first came out in like, 2015. Before LttP Randomizer existed. Z1R wasn't, and isn't, that popular. When LttP randomizer came out, it exploded in popularity. I realize popularity is not at all the same thing as being iconic, but these two things are almost equally old at this point, and one of them is remembered far more and revered far more and it's obviously LttP by several miles. |
Topic | What are the three most "iconic" Zelda games? |
Paratroopa1 04/21/25 5:57:14 AM #64 | Having a save feature isn't iconic! It's important, it's influential, but it's not iconic. As an absolutely rabid Z1 fan I feel like I'm dying for people to acknowledge the game. It's largely forgotten and it's not really rolled into peoples general idea of what a Zelda game is nowadays. There's a lot of stuff that people consider to be standard Zelda things that started with LttP, not Z1. The Master Sword. Treasure chests. The Hookshot. Link swinging his sword in an arc. Puzzles, and dungeon items that help you solve them in the dungeon you find them (I know people will be pedantic about this but the scant examples of this in Z1 just do not count). Cuccos. Refillable bottles. Keys that can only be used in the dungeon they're found. Pegasus Boots. Kakariko Village. A hammer. An item that allows you to swim. Multiple different realities to travel between. Crystal switches. Bombs that hurt you when you stand too close to them. Bombable walls that are actually visible. I could go on and on, and a lot of examples of things that did start in Zelda 1 are better remembered in LttP or other later games. People remember fighting Ganon in LttP; most people probably didn't even make it that far in Z1, and if they did they don't remember it. I'm a diehard Z1 fan and people just really do not remember or respect the game much at all. It's a relic that people pay lip service to while considering LttP the first "good" Zelda, the first "true" Zelda in spirit. It's largely forgotten. |

Paratroopa1 04/16/25 9:53:44 PM #24 | Bitto posted... Punch-Out ages really well. Ask me my favorite Wii games 10 years ago and Punch-Out would probably be a +3. But it really stuck with me while games like Galaxy or Brawl faded more and more away. It certainly helps that it's basically no fluff, the motion controls aren't even a factor, and the amount of effort on everything just feels so finely tuned, especially in comparison to the other Wii games.Yeah, same. This and Rhythm Heaven Fever are probably the Wii games that have aged the best for me; most games on the console have faded into the background (if they were ever in the foreground in the first place, I think this was a serious dark period for Nintendo) but those games remain essentials, and it's not coincidental that neither uses motion controls, they're just really effective executions of their games' concepts. |

I don't think there's any deeper reason behind using El Salvador other than it's a political ally that happens to already have an internationally recognized torture prison.Nayib Bukele is a populist, authoritarian leader who has a reputation for being tough on crime; he's pretty popular since he was elected basically on the platform of putting gang members in gulags (you could argue it's understandable, given El Salvador's situation, but that's neither here nor there). It makes sense to me that he's the kind of guy Trump would cozy up to. |

Paratroopa1 04/14/25 10:37:55 PM #52 | Xeybozn posted... I'm not surprised that Trump wants to jail and/or murder his political opponents, but involving El Salvador is just baffling. It's not a large enough country to hold many people alive, but sending people there just to kill them would just slow the whole operation down. It's already clear that it won't work as a legal loophole or hide what he's doing. Why go through all the extra work when he could just do all that stuff here?I would say that it IS clear that it's working, and that permanently disappearing them is his goal, which is significantly harder to accomplish in the US |

This is the absolute stupidest part of the whole thing imo and the fact that there are ANY economists that don't immediately point this out really says a lot about economists |
