The pacing is weird - the investigations feel like they involve too much back-and-forth between annoying locations while the trial segments go a little bit too quickly. But other than that this is like - one of the most quintessential AA cases. It's one of the rare times that we ACTUALLY have Phoenix, Edgeworth, and Maya all together, it's the first case to have a really compelling murder mystery, the villain and the side characters are all great (Oldbag is awesome), and there's just so much classic, iconic AA stuff going on here. This was the case that made me fall in love with this game fully.

The problem with board games is that there's really three distinct eras of board games - the ancient ones that are universal (chess, go etc), the 'classics' that every family has in their closet (monopoly, clue) and the modern ones that are way better than the classics (catan and everything onward)

I have always found it really funny that for as much reputation as Edgeworth has for the 'updated autopsy report', that's literally a thing he only ever does once. 1-2 is the only time we see Edgeworth's darker side in real time - he gets so immediately cut down to size by the witnesses in 1-3 that we never really see it again. It's kind of a shame - one of the things 1-2 does incredibly well is just how QUICKLY it establishes Edgeworth as a character, that by the end of the case everyone who plays it is like, "he's objecting again? That's classic Edgeworth!"

That's what makes 1-1 and 1-2 so difficult for me to rate. They're weak, by comparison to the amazing heights that this series reaches pretty consistently starting immediately after this case, but they're undeniably effective at establishing the series.

It's a weird case. Mia's death is an awesome, shocking hook for the series to start off with, and the series in general starts to find its groove here in terms of writing. I really like the development of Phoenix and Maya's relationship. But the murder mystery is deeply lame, Redd White is such a lame villain for the position he has, and the ending to the case sucks, not because Mia comes back (that seemed dumb at the time but no longer does) but because Redd White giving up because of a list of names is silly and feels unearned.

Star of the Day: Trevenant
I guess I could give it to Houndoom (nice) but we've had so few good results by anything later than gen 5 that it feels worth celebrating that Trevenant took a solid 2nd place here.

Dud of the Day: Togedemaru
Might be the worst performance we get out of an electric rodent, but there's still a few to come. This was a pretty tough division in my estimation but getting bounced by Bounsweet has to hurt.

I'm giving it like, two pity points here for a simple reason: I've never seen anyone play 1-1 and come away from it not wanting to immediately play more. It's a good tutorial and it introduces people to the game and people almost always enjoy it. That said, like, there's nothing here, really. It's got 'pilot episode' writing all over it. It'd be a 1/10 if not for the fact that I think it serves its purpose really well.

I could give it to Entei for that blowout, but raise your hand if you had Vileplume getting 47 points, even in a weak division.

Dud of the Day: Lanturn
I know I gave the other 2nd place finisher star, but you just won 'kill the gen 2 Pokemon', this is kind of a limp result considering!

Fun fact: Gholdengo is almost preposterously divisive, maybe the most divisive Pokemon so far. Out of 41 ballots he appeared on a whopping 30 of them, with exactly 15 positive votes and exactly 15 negative votes, left off of just 11 ballots.

What makes this even more frustrating for me is that I LIKED the sokoban puzzles. Like, some people really don't enjoy the basic puzzle solving in this game but I actually did... THE FIRST TIME. Only on the first playthrough. After that? I was done with that shit. I didn't want to do the 'hard mode' puzzles and looked up a lot of solutions, and I really think the game would have been much better if there were even more shortcuts and more ways to hop around the game freely.

Honestly though I just really love Ourer Wilds/The Witness/Tunic and I feel I've been chasing the same high I got from those games
Agreed, Outer Wilds is my #1 game of all time, The Witness is like a top 10-20 game, and Tunic is definitely a top 100 game for me also although I have some more problems with Tunic - I really wish that the powerup cards you find actually did more useful things, so that if you could solve the puzzle of 'what do they do' that could be a sort of alternate wincon to the game's otherwise unnecessarily hard combat - I don't know why the combat in the game is so hard if you can't solve it by figuring out the game's puzzles. Tunic is so good otherwise though so I kinda wish it was just the like 5% more of the way to being perfect

But yeah I am basically chasing after more games that are like Outer Wilds and The Witness which are both 10/10 games for me and unfortunately Void Stranger LOOKS like it's going to get there at times but it doesn't quite put it all together. Some of the ideas this game has are AWESOME but the whole package is frustrating

I still have to go back and finish this game but I'm still feeling dissatisfied with the fact that I accidentally looked up the answer for how to kill Tail but absolutely no amount of exploring the game OR cheating and looking stuff up is telling me how I was supposed to figure out how? so I don't even know if I'm sequence breaking. I've done all three characters' normal endings and I know I need to kill everyone and then go to floor 000 for some reason

This game is extremely cool but also deeply frustrating, I really don't know how to evaluate it

I think McGilded not hiring a lawyer is pretty silly given how quickly the jury defaults to guilty early in the case, and the Summation Examination presumably wouldn't have been thought of at all by anyone other than Susato. But late in the case, we see how adept he is at manipulating the jury and the public with his efficient dismantling and framing of Fairplay and Furst. My guess is he would've been perfectly competent defending himself, and would've initiated the tricks earlier on if necessary, but for some reason decides to take a backseat when Ryunosuke jumps on board.

Why he doesn't start causing drama when the jury is leaning guilty though, I dunno.
Yeah, like, McGilded seems like he was actually in pretty serious danger of things going against him. What the fuck was his actual plan here if he didn't have an attorney? I seriously don't get it? And this is NOT a minor issue with the case that can be handwaved away, imo - the entire CASE is about how McGilded masterminded this whole conspiracy, so if his master plan doesn't make sense from the very beginning it really puts a huge dent in the whole thing for me.
