Decided to boot up Total War: Warhammer.

The opening cinematic made sense and gave me a good feel of the world. The tutorial menu has huge texts about all the races and lords.
For non-40k I'm pretty sure this is the very best starting point if you're playibg video games

The on-screen tutorial in Space Marine on the PC is confusing. Like WTF is "mouse 5" mouse 1 and 2 I obviously understand.
I think I'm getting the hang of it though.
Done the first part and it seems fun so far.

The rulebooks for the tabletop games are probably the best for their overall summation of how things are, but if you have no interest in actually playing the tabletop games they're kind of a waste of an unreasonable amount of money just to get a lore overview.

So...maybe I should start wherever and just read wikis?

Also got Boltgun. It's fun as hell played the first level.
Again though I have no idea wtf is going on story-wise. This must be a game where you have to understand the franchise first.

Ok so for the steam sale I got:

Inquisitor martyr
Total war warhammer 1 and 2 with dlc

And I've had Dawn of War 1 and 2 in my steam library for awhile, along with Space Hulk.

So which should I start with?
Or maybe I should start with Warhammer online private server?

Never got into any tabletop so video games will have to be the way to go.
Can you start with 40k first or just Warhammer? Would Total War and Dawn of War be good starting points for lore?
Another option for me would be trying Warhammer Online. Officially shut down but there is a private fan server.

I just start the game and barely even know how to move or qtf to do with the suitcase to the left.
I guess this might be one of those old PC games where you had to spend like a whole hour reading the manual. Maybe I'll do that later.

Morrowind's travel was fine. Definitely not terrible like this.

I remember the original version of the game, when you didn't get a mount until like 20 or 40 or something ridiculous. And then the mount was like 25% increased speed.

This is the version of the game I'm playing now. WoW classic. I chose it over retail because this is the version highly regarded while retail is trashed by everyone.
If retail is better than classic for travel then I'll just play Guild Wars 2.

Endless fucking walking is not always fun.
I understand the argument that no fast travel is more immersive, but it's so goddamn boring.
Kinda makes me wonder why THIS is the mainstream most popular MMO. This is a walking simulator before the term even existed SMH

Yea, I beat Warcraft 3 (and it's expansion) pretty easily. I could never get through WC 1 due to the completely unfriendly user interface. If any game needs an enhanced edition, it is that. Also beat WC2, BtdP, and SC 1. Brood War I got up to Zerg mission 3 or 4 and basically had to cheat the rest of the way through. Never went back to beat it legit.

What about StarCraft 2?
I plan to go through that one as well. Hopefully by Warcraft 3 Blizz realized these games weren't accessible enough to all players so they toned down the difficulty.

Bro the game is still very active online you should install it. I see tons of games like that going on custom games.

I beat StarCraft a few years ago and the game was too hard imo. I was intimidated by Brood War so never finished it. Also beat Warcraft 1 and 2 and they were also difficult.
Warcraft 3 on normal is a breath of fresh air so far. I'm actually having fun and the game doesn't punish you as much for taking your time like the other ones do.

What do you think will be the final straw?

Playing hard mode, the apartment storm is absolute horseshit. Tried for hours. You need reflexes of a god. I 100%'d Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls too. I'd like to think by that point Quantic Dream realized that people don't want to pull their hair out for a STORY DRIVEN game.

I haven't had this much fun in ages. I never played ow1 either so this is all new to me. Maybe for the first time in 15 years I can make some fps online friends.
I also appreciate how the game uses a proprietary engine instead of using Unreal or something like 90% of games nowadays.

Upon further investigation and seeing his online posts, seems Aaron Bushnell was a terminally online, extremist pos. He celebrated the deaths of the 3 USA servicemen who died and also all the civilians who died on October 7th, so we don't have to have sympathy for him afterall.

I came back to it a few years ago but the pace on official servers was extreme. I picked some special class- I think it was Kanna?- and I was gaining levels so quickly with aoes that covered such massive areas it felt pointless. It felt like they were trying to compete with private servers, which I guess at that point they were

It's like that with all old MMOs though. They want new players to be able to catch up.
I started a new WOW character a few years ago and I think my character gained like 6 levels from one quest lol
