Oh my, is this another one of those topics where people keep claiming the supernatural exists because people feel it does, or because they have "experiences", none of which are documented with real evidence in spite of the ubiquity of smartphones?

Certainly, it is possible that something like life after death is real. For example, the real world could be something like the Matrix, and we won't be aware of having participated in a simulation until our VR body dies and we wake up in our real body in a tank. If we were in a simulation, it would be trivial to disguise flaws programmatically, and you don't have to overcome the apparent lack of any mechanism for the consciousness outside of our physical brains.

It'd be exciting if someone could produce compelling evidence for ghosts, life after death, the intervention of spirits, or psychic phenomena. But so far, no dice.

On the subject of the Amityville Horror house, that is pretty thoroughly debunked. The people who lived in the house afterwards reported nothing out of the ordinary, and if you take the accounts at face value and ignore the money angle, it sort of sounds like the guy might have had a psychotic episode.

It's a relative. Obviously they are negative and a bit immature, but I feel like there should be a better way of handling it. I get frustrated or angry, and I want to answer all of their questions literally. I don't care much for games, and I just flat out can't stand lying to people, especially if the lying is done to suit childish behavior.

I have a relative who constantly employs three incredibly difficult to counter communication tactics that I just can't overcome to reach a more positive dialog. My already somewhat poor social skills have taken a toll from COVID, and I'm having trouble having real conversations or a satisfying relationship with this person. Any insight anyone can offer on how to get past this would be most welcome.

  1. When they want to derail a conversation or are just in a bad mood, they'll ask an endless string of overly specific questions, or sometimes literally just "why". If you don't know the answer, try and change the subject, or just stop answering the questions altogether, you're being an impatient jerk who is stiffing their "curiosity".
  2. They like to engage in a monologue that consists mostly of complaining or talking about how unfair things are. If I fail to wait for a lull in the deluge of complaints to try and change the subject, I'm being a jerk and should just "let them talk".
  3. Closely related to #1, if this person makes a mistake or is unhappy with a choice they made, they'll sometimes start asking for an explanation. Telling them the actual truth--that they messed up or chose to do something that they don't like in retrospect--is something they feel is bullying and, again, me being a jerk.

And no, before you ask, this person isn't elderly or suffering from dementia. There are some medical conditions that might be making their behavior a bit worse, but this is how they've acted their whole life. I've been trying hard to gain better soft skills, but none of the books I've read or the videos I've watched or the posts I've seen have addressed these lovely tactics.

Yeah, the Monster Madness plagiarism--together with real doubts as to how many, if any, of the scripts James wrote himself--is bad. Nobody is tuning into Monster Madness to watch James read another person's thoughts about a movie and pass them off as his own, doubly so if the people who wrote the script for him can't be bothered to not literally lift content from other reviews.

Are you happy with your life?

How do you feel about your life? I'm aware that COVID has generally produced a spike in complaints regarding mental and emotional wellness, but anecdotally, I don't know one person who seems secure in how their lives are going. Lots of concerns about hours at work (or it's evil twin, an endless number of hours with no time off), an inability to find work with a living wage, or concerns about getting cut. Even the people I see around the area where I live all seem crabby and really short with each other.

For me personally, I'd need an actual time machine to feel very good about my life. I've got some underlying heath conditions that needed to be discovered and treated years ago for me to have good quality of life, and that might be skewing my perspective. Maybe the world is kind of just in a slump right now. Enlighten me with your poll responses, please!

we didn't tho, we gave them a roof over their head and monthly spending money that they can use on drugs and alcohol, but they're still leeches whose existence contributes absolutely nothing to our society
First of all, it's absurd to think that they are all like that. Second, unless there is some hidden dark side to social programs like this, it is infinitely better than finding gross or dangerous homeless folks leaving piss, shit, or used needles on the streets. Or finding them lying around in bathrooms or something to stay warm. And you know, for the ones that aren't super gross or dangerous but just can't function, how is it better having them lie around on the streets instead of having a place to stay? For them or society?

The US solution--which consists primarily of leaving people to flounder on the streets with almost no available assistance or a way out, and don't you dare try and address any of the reasons why there seems to be a disturbing number of homeless in the Greatest Country on Earth--is horrible. It's bad for the homeless and it's bad for regular folks too. I have no idea how many homeless people are just down on their luck and could function with some help, but it certainly isn't zero. And even your so-called "leeches" are still people that are going to exist one way or another. It's safer for all parties concerned if they have a place to stay. And I'll bet a non-zero number of "leeches" might eventually change their ways if they have access to generous social programs.

If you disagree with all this, I'd like to know why.

I don't know that there is enough information to think about power levels in LOTR. Magic is very nebulous in that setting because it is against the rules to help mortals too much. Sauron probably didn't care about that but was disembodied and at nowhere near full strength, and I think Sarumon (sp?) couldn't draw on his full strength to be evil either, if memory serves.

I've only read the first six Shannara books, but unless the LOTR characters were hiding their powers significantly, pretty much anyone with more than a drop or two of magic would steamroll them all without much trouble. The writing for most of the books isn't as good as LOTR, and the first one is a blatant copy, but I love the differences Terry Brooks included in the books. Seeing the druid Allanon actually consistently fight in all the battles with actual attack magic made more sense and was more satisfying. I thought the Sword of Shannara was cooler than the One Ring too.
