I recall reading about how a police officer tasered someone until they started smoking a few years ago, claiming she didn't know what else to do.

There was a black suspect wanted out in Tukwilla. As he going about his normal shift in a mall. A black officer comes rushing in and dive tackles him over the counter. His head connected with the top side edge corner of the counter behind him.

Which knocked him out unconscious. The officer lifted him up. Carrying him out of the mall. Placing the young man into his patrol car. They held him in jail for one day. Before they identified that he was not the wanted suspect.
That sounds like something you'd see in some kind of action comedy movie. The worst part is that a black officer was doing it to a black man.

On the subject of the original story, I don't believe for a second that the woman's father is surprised by what happened, or that he thinks something will come of it. He worked in the police force for over 30 years. Yeah, there are good folks out there who are officers, but those guys just close ranks for their own safety and career when one of the bad ones does something awful. Prosecutors, judges, and the police unions cover the bad ones, so you really can't get rid of them once they are in.

What?
https://www.nyu.edu/about/news-publications/news/2021/september/artificial-cells.html

The exact way cellular life first got its start in the beginning is a mystery, but it certainly doesn't require magic. The same can be said of human consciousness. No, we can't fully describe the processes that produce it, but we understand the the basic structure of the brain and the cells that make it up. In the field of computer science, there have been all kinds of advances in things like photo classification, text generation, and text processing. No, we can't do it the same way nature does or to the same degree of quality, but where exactly are the magic missing pieces you envision there being?

Consider the idea of the soul. We know that damage to the brain can radically alter just about every aspect of an individual's personality, behavior, and cognitive processing. But wishful thinking suggests there should be an extra bit that is the real source of a person's consciousness. What is a soul made of and why can't we detect it? How does the soul connect to the brain, and why can't we see any connection points between the brain and the soul? Surely if it exists there must be a connection between this impossible to see soul and the very real, material brain it controls. And what precisely does the soul do? Memories, morals and inhibitions, likes and dislikes, even sexual orientation---brain trauma can change all of these things. A perfectly moral, nice fellow can be turned into a violent, psychotic person by a degenerative brain disease. Where is the soul in all of this?

No one's life goes as expected though so I don't subscribe to the 'Woe is me. I could have been something.' feelings.
I feel this is unfair. A bad relationship, a bad family situation, serious health problems, or sometimes even a few spectacularly bad life choices can send you into a death spiral that's difficult to recover from. The vast majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and upward social mobility in 2021 is kind of limited compared how it used to be. I think it's perfectly valid to feel like your life totally went off track, and to recognize that digging yourself out of the hole you dug for yourself (or had dug for you in some cases) is harder than society tends to admit, and is made even harder by the lack of good social programs and resources for folks in a tough spot.

I'd like to speak out in the show's defense. The first three episodes have rough animation and transitions, and the plot progression was uneven. But when I gave it a second chance, I discovered it was something quite special. I'm not gay or trans, but the way the characters bond to each other and confront real problems hit me straight in the feels. I've never seen anything quite like it and it really cheered me up when I needed it, and I'm really sad that they probably won't give it a second season.

The problems the show does have feel like Crunchy torpedoing it show with incompetence and mismanagement.

If you aren't too far along, I'd like to suggest that Java is the wrong choice for basically any game project in 2021. If the game is 2D, go with Godot or Unity, or even RPGMaker if your game is that exact kind of style and you don't mind the stigma. If the game is 3D, go with either Unity or Unreal (the reputation for the difficulty of learning BPs is overblown, and there are some great courses on Udemy that walk you through making simple games from scratch to learn).

If the goal of your game is to get good at a programming language rather than just making a game, there are strong game libraries for JS (and by extension, TS), Python, and even Ruby. The state of game making in pure Java is kind of gross, so if you like the idea of making a game, I'd bite the bullet and learn a language you don't know and make a game with that and broaden your horizons. Pick something else for Java, unless you want to try and write a game in it to get more comfortable with Android app development.

If I've convinced you to try something other than Java, start with some much smaller games that you can complete quickly to build skill and confidence. If you are itching to keep going with your RPG, I'd work on the script, characters, art, music, and all that while you power up.

The hell does that have do with the CDC bowing to corporate pressure? It's a huge fucking problem that the CDC's policy is being dictated by corporations instead of by actual science and unbiased experts. It's a further blow to the stability of our government and to any confidence people might have in what we are being told.

We are just beginning to see the effects of long COVID, and we don't really understand it. Omicron is allegedly less lethal to the individual, but we have no idea about any lasting side effects, or if this will even be the last big variant given that you can apparently get COVID more than once. Even if you think COVID is here to stay and we just need to get on with things, it is vital that we be able to trust the government and the CDC to give us actual facts as the situation evolves.

Yeah, that amount isn't realistic. In real life, they don't even give you enough to pay (adjusted or controlled) rent and buy food. Realistically, you get so little that you have to live with one or two other people who will help you out. If you work out the math, it's less than minimum wage. It only makes sense to take disability if you absolutely can't work or if you need the health insurance to get back on your feet or stay alive.

Health insurance, ultra low disability payments, and lack of general wheelchair accessibility in spite of the ADA (you'd be surprised how many people not in wheelchairs need accessible entrances or elevators) make America feel like a pale imitation of a superpower. It's just gross.

Black Christmas is like the original slasher flick, but it isn't necessarily great. Phantasm is 100% a legit masterpiece. One that I don't see get recommended that often is The Brood. Scanners is another Cronenberg great that misses the 70s criteria by two years, but it's really out there and feels entirely like the 70s so watch that too.

Most of the people I know seem to very self-absorbed and have little empathy or sympathy for other people. Conversations irl seem to generally lack depth. Conversations online seem to often be of the polarizing, angry variety where people seek validation they can't have irl from other people. So many folks seem to see things like intimate relationships or friendships as transactional. Even the advice you see in self-help books looks like that to me.

In advice and relationships threads, an often used tactic is to claim that people who are upset by negative or hurtful things is to claim the person needs to grow up, or to otherwise imply that they aren't behaving like an adult. It might be my own personal circumstances at work, but I've interacted with very few people who seem completely stable or happy with their lives.

I feel like it isn't possible for most people to have emotionally satisfying connections with other people. Is it just me?

People put way too much emphasis on sex. The real world isn't like the movies. Over a lifetime, study suggest the average number of sex partners for a person is between 4 and 8. Some will be more, some less. And sex isn't always some glamorous thing either. Plenty of people have admitted on forums that they haven't enjoyed many casual encounters they've had, and I recall reading a lifestyle article saying that a surprising number of men either don't enjoy sex much or actually have had traumatic experiences.

Take life at your own pace. Be happy with who you are, change what needs to be changed if it can be, and move toward your goals with confidence. People always project the best possible image of themselves and what they believe is society's version of a good life. Reality can be quite different.

Actually, I don't: I know I suffer from anxiety, agoraphobia, and severe stress, and a lack of certain basic life skills. The problem comes when you try to explain where those things are coming from and why I've been unsuccessful at changing them. My entire family is full of crazy, mean, dysfunctional people. The trouble is finding a professional who has seen people like them before and can accept what I tell them without thinking I'm exaggerating, lying, or just in need of being more understanding.
