Wasn't it down to only a few thousand votes in some states?

I believe the smallest margin was 12,000, in Georgia (leading to Trump calling up the governor of Georgia and urging him to "find" 12,000 extra votes for him). To date, Georgia's seen just shy of 22,000 deaths, so that could have tipped the scale, but that's an extreme example (and, again, relies on the completely unrealistic assumption that 100% of deaths are Republican). Also, they were just over 9000 at the time of the election, so that still wouldn't have been enough to explain the upset.

I have honestly never thought to try, it might even give console accesses on some games known for it.

Similarly, I've never thought to try, though it might work. Regardless, though, I'm not going to use M+KB on the Switch because my dock setup isn't conducive to that. Whatever options might exist, I make a point of buying games I think will work better with M+KB on PC (I figured I'd give D3 a chance because many people found it worked well with a controller and I was curious to see how it did, and while it did the job pretty nicely, I still definitely prefer M+KB), so there's not much incentive to rearrange my living room to facilitate hooking it up to my Switch.

there's not really an issue even if it was problematic, the game is decidedly not very difficult, even at torment 15

I mean, it obviously wasn't catastrophically dysfunctional. Just objectively worse. Considering other subjective factors like personally finding controllers more comfortable, it's perfectly conceivable that some people would prefer using a controller. It's just clearly incorrect to say that controllers are objectively the best option.

Other things to consider:
-Republicans are more likely to ignore virus prevention methods like masks or social distancing
-Republicans are more likely to be older, which significantly increases the risk of death or serious complications from COVID.

Even without considering the substantial difference in vaccination rates between the political parties, Republicans are more likely to catch COVID due to their more flippant attitude towards virus prevention methods and more likely to die from it due to demographics.

Indeed. Now, on the flip side, cities tend to lean left, and their increased population density puts them at higher risk of large outbreaks. That's going to offset some of what those other factors contribute. That said, the trend has been for Republican counties to have more cases on average than Democratic ones since a few months after the first wave hit cities like NY, Seattle, and LA, so that obviously hasn't been enough to fully mitigate it.

darkknight109 posted...
Honestly, I don't actually think it's going to have the major political impact some people think, at least in terms of the Republican voterbase shrinking as a result of die-offs (620,000 Americans have died from COVID since the pandemic started; even if you pretend that every single one of them was a Republican voter, that's not even 1% of Donald Trump's vote total in the last election), but who knows, maybe it'll be enough to tip the scales in some of the swingier spots of the country.

Exactly my thoughts. Especially where the Democratic vaccination rate is also still pretty low and therefore can't be characterized as anything close to "Democrats can't die of Covid anymore!", I don't think "all your voters are dead!" should really be treated as anything more than a humourous exaggeration.

people said that about d3

turns out the best way to play it is with a controller

I wouldn't say that. Controllers are terrible for any build that relies on ground targeting for positioning, like Leapquake or Raiment. The auto-aim is fine for abilities that target enemies (though it makes it pretty mindless to not even have to pay enough attention to click on them), but with Raiment, you're stuck zipping halfway across the map with every Dash Strike and having to reposition manually to keep attacking, and Leapquake is very much a "Jesus take the wheel" build in that you have to hope auto-aim doesn't throw you somewhere you don't want.

Objectively, M+KB allows for more precise aiming. How much that matters varies by build, but it's nonetheless true.

To think that a virus is bias (like yourself) and only killing republicans is complete lunacy

https://www.kff.org/policy-watch/the-red-blue-divide-in-covid-19-vaccination-rates-is-growing/

It is indeed a gross exaggeration to say that only Republicans are dying, but across the country, Republicans are falling way behind on vaccination rates. Given that being vaccinated reduces the risk of death by somewhere in the range of 99.5-99.9%, that's going to create a political bias in death rates. Based purely on those numbers (46.7% of democrats vaxxed, 35% of republicans, or 53.3% and 65% unvaxxed, respectively), we can expect roughly 22% more republicans to die of Covid than democrats.

Of course, that's not the full picture (several other factors play into any potential political bias), but it's quite reasonable to predict that more Republicans than Democrats will be dying in the coming months. That's not the virus being biased, that's Republicans biasing themselves to be more vulnerable to it.

As an aside, though, sub-50% for democrats is pathetic, given that they're the ones that are doing the best. Y'all need to step that up.

Vaccine passport =/= restricted access based on vaccination status.

all it does is create a more standardized and (probably) reliable Means for an individual to provide proof of vaccination status.

for access and restrictions that should be up to the individual business owners no shirt no shoes no vaccine, no service.

its the owners business they should chose how to operate without state interference.

As nice an idea as that is, it's pretty useless as an infection control strategy. Individual businesses tend to have their own success as a priority, not public health. Realistically, any business that does demand masks and/or vaccines when their competitors do not is going to suffer quite significantly. We've already seen this with the relaxation of mask mandates: Very few individual businesses kept them up once others decided that "the 30% of the population that's fully vaccinated doesn't need masks" meant "nobody needs masks."

Without a uniform mandate, any business that does try to contribute to overcoming this pandemic is going to be at a considerable disadvantage compared to those that don't. Mandates level the playing field and ensure that measures are actually taken, which is the only way to actually fix the problem. That's very much at odds with the ideal of giving people freedom to operate as they wish, but that's always come with the caveat of "provided they don't hurt anyone," and in a pandemic situation, operating against public health recommendations hurts people. There is, unfortunately, no way around that.

I think this problem. Not all cities have a decent one. My city is ok. But we dont have a ton of buses. So, we have 8 routes around the city. And its an hour per route. So, if you miss the bus, you have an hour before the next one

That is the core of the issue. There's a vicious cycle wherein people don't use transit when the service isn't good enough, which leads to cuts in transit services because there aren't enough passengers to support them. Many places do have absolutely terrible transit systems that are in no way an acceptable substitute for driving (heck, a few years ago here, many employers were outright refusing to hire people that relied on buses because they were so unreliable). So long as efforts to improve service aren't made, though, the demand will never be there. A serious commitment has to be made to making transit a viable alternative to driving before people will even give it a chance.

Probably. But Id rather not be inconvenienced if I dont have to, tbqh

Nobody would, but sometimes, practical limitations demand giving up conveniences, especially when you start scaling them up such that everybody has them. If money were no object, I'm sure we'd all love to be taken door to door by a personal helicopter because that would be super convenient, but if everybody tried to do that, the air traffic would be so bad that a lot of the potential time savings would be lost and there'd be no room to land. That's obviously an extreme hypothetical scenario with no chance of ever being realized, but it's reasonably analogous: Giving everyone the convenience of using a personal car for everything has created massive inefficiencies and introduced new inconveniences that ultimately make for a worse experience.

California cases: 4.06 million

Right off the bat, we see that you've employed some very generous rounding to help your point, which calls your conclusion into question. There's another pair of statistics you should be involving to make this comparison, though:

California population: 39.51 million
Florida population: 21.48 million

Which, with a little bit of basic division, gives us the following comparison:

California: 10,275.9 cases per 100,000 people, 161.7 deaths
Florida: 13,268.2 cases per 100,000 people, 187.0 deaths

Huh. Looks like a 30% higher case load per capita and 15% higher deaths. Who could possibly have seen this coming?

I'm having trouble parsing that sentence, are you saying that Disney is leading the charge against draconian copyright laws? Because it was Disney that had the law changed from 56 years (already draconian) to 75 and then again to 95 with the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act, and has been quietly lobbying congress to extend it to 125 years or beyond; the only reason an extension has not been granted or otherwise slipped into a bill is because of the work of the EFF.

Yeah, I'm saying that they're one of the major driving forces behind extending the 75 year thing, not that they're relaxing copyright laws. I do think it's quite reasonable for Disney to retain the rights to all of the characters and IP's they're still actively using, despite their age.

if they aren't selling them in any form, then the company isn't going to make money from them anyway.

That's about my attitude. There should be some degree of grace period to let them organize a re-release, rather than immediately having them become public domain as soon as official sale stops, but if they aren't trying to make money off the property, piracy is genuinely harmless.

Again, though, I feel that the best case scenario is that companies just sell their stuff forever, not that a significant portion of their libraries end up public domain. Ideally, IP holders should be compensated appropriately for their stuff. If they don't care about that, though, having it archived somewhere else and available for public use is highly preferable to having it hoarded away where nobody can enjoy it.

Krazy_Kirby posted...
lots of those people even pay money for things there

That's one aspect of the "public domain" idea that does get a little iffy. While distributing material that the IP holder doesn't want to sell is fine, profiting from distributing it is another matter entirely. Many emulator sites do make a quasi-decent amount of money (mostly from ad revenue, though some have premium subscription models), and I don't think that's altogether ethical.

That said, running these sites does require time, effort, and money, so some degree of compensation for that isn't unreasonable (much like people get paid to work in a library, even though they didn't write any of the books they're loaning out). I don't think we can expect the government to start handing out grants for people running video game emulation libraries (while that's no less legitimate than offering grants to book libraries, the notion that video games are an art form that warrants preservation isn't tremendously popular yet), so until we can, allowing these sites to support themselves is really the only way for that to work. I'd guess the best option would be to require a certain percentage of any profits to be paid to the IP holders (presumably based on their share of the downloads). How that would work with defunct companies, I'm not sure, but I'm sure something could be worked out.

My car gets 45-50mpg highway, and it is cheaper and less hassle than airplane tickets for the fam and a rental car (which I would need because who the fuck travels somewhere to stay in one place. Even visiting friends for me requires an hours drive sometimes)

You guys live in some fantasy land where not only are buses clean and safe and lovely to ride on, but that there's a bus that on command will take you exactly where you need to at any given moment.

I like how this entire post ignores that public transit would be filled by everyone under a more transit-reliant paradigm, as opposed to those that can't afford cars being over-represented, and basically just amounts to "I don't want to be reminded that people that can't afford cars exist."

but that there's a bus that on command will take you exactly where you need to at any given moment.

Even with my city's current, hideously inadequate bus system, I can generally get a bus that takes me to within a 10-minute walk of my destination, and it's not unheard of at all for cities with decent transit systems to have a bus show up every 5-10 minutes on every route. Obviously, that's not taking me right to the door, but it's not at all uncommon for the process of finding parking and walking from my parking spot to take 5-10 minutes, so it's not nearly as inconvenient as people like to think. Is public transit ever going to be more personally convenient than driving? No (not until we have on-demand self-driving taxis that take us door to door). Can it be close enough that the minor personal inconvenience is outweighed by the tremendous societal benefit? Absolutely.

Yes, all this misinformation trolling has us in quite a cucumber.

(I say cucumber instead of pickle because according to sunny, there is no need to differentiate between brined and unbrined things. They are the same.)

Nah, Sunny would still call it a pickle, it'd just be a cucumber with some salt sprinkled on it.

Actiblizz: I wasn't exactly buying many of their games to begin with, but WC3 Reforged turned me off of buying any of their games for a good, long while. If I can't trust them not to break a game 15 years after I bought it, I see no reason to give them any more money. And then the whole sexual assault thing came out and reinforced the decision, since I really don't want to support executives that are facilitating that.

Ubisoft: Again, I wasn't buying much from them anyway, but they're also trying their best to emulate the Vatican, so I'm not supporting that.

EA: Destroying studios left and right, blatantly exploiting children and mental illness for monetary gain, and generally just epitomizing everything that's wrong with the AAA industry. This is less of a deliberate boycott and more a matter of them just not making anything I want to subject myself to, but I generally resent them enough to be wary of anything with their name on it.

That's all that immediately comes to mind.

I can go months without showing anyone my id. So it's not really.

Only if you choose not to access services that require it. Similarly, if you didn't want to show anyone your vaccination record, you could choose not to access services that require it.

BEERandWEED posted...
None of my ids show my private health information.

Your DoB and address are significantly easier to abuse than your vaccination status. Concerns about "private health information" really only apply to the sorts of things that might cause damages or embarrassment if they were leaked. HIPAA applies uniformly because it's a lot more practical to just apply regulations to all health information instead of trying to specify all kinds of exceptions, but in practice, disclosing your vaccination status is only going to cause you problems if you're not vaccinated. That's not something you'll be doing to get into any place that requires proof of vaccination (since there's very little point in walking up to a store and saying "you won't let me in"), so I think it's pretty safe to consider that point moot.

No. And that isn't the same at all.

It's requiring you to show evidence that you are qualified to access that service. That's fundamentally identical to asking for proof of vaccination before letting you in.

People are not using parking lots during a pandemic? I'm shocked.

"Completely empty or just storing an empty car." That comment has nothing to do with the pandemic, that's just how parking lots work.

Revelation34 posted...
Also what does real estate have to do with roads?

Roads occupy land, land which can't be used for anything else outside of occasional parades or street parties that temporarily close them.

I was hoping it would be a bigger part of the discussion, you weren't the issue as you actually did contribute

At risk of sounding arrogant, I don't think there's much more to discuss than what I said. Yes, some people do simply enjoy driving, but the vast, vast majority of the infrastructure and culture surrounding driving is dedicated to people that are driving out of necessity or convenience, not for fun (and, in fact, most traffic infrastructure isn't even used by people driving for fun, because stopping for traffic lights every other block isn't much fun). As such, designing that infrastructure and culture around people who drive for fun makes no sense. Opportunities will always exist to drive for those who want to, but preserving that isn't a reason to not try to improve commuting with radical paradigm shifts.

That's a lot of erroneous math. Covid won't get near AIDS death toll and the AIDS death toll in the 80s was much higher than in recent years.

https://ourworldindata.org/hiv-aids#is-the-world-making-progress-in-its-fight-against-hiv-aids

Oh hey a convenient chart of deaths per year. And... look at that, it peaks at 1.95 million. Sure it only goes back to 1990, but based on the shape of the graph and some pretty basic extrapolation, I have considerable reason to believe it wasn't much higher in the 80's. Not globally, anyway. As we all know, the vast, vast majority of HIV-related deaths have been from Africa, since it spread out of control there while the US managed to get a pretty good grasp on it relatively early at home. I wonder how the statistics would compare if we looked only at the US?

HIV: Approximately 726,000 deaths between 1981 and 2020 (39 years)
Covid: 617,000 deaths between March 2020 and August 2021 (1.3 years)

Oh my. Not only does it look like Covid will "get near" the American HIV death toll, at 553 deaths per day and climbing, there's actually a pretty solid chance it will kill more Americans by the 2-year mark than HIV has in 39 years.

You would think that at some point, you'd learn that it's a bad idea to make statistical claims without checking that the stats actually support them.

SunWuKung420 posted...
But still, to act like covid is the worst health crisis in a century is still just wrong.

You are genuinely struggling to prove the claim that it's only the second-worst one, based on the results we're seeing well before it's actually over and only after taking unprecedented measures to keep it from spreading out of control. Clearly, there is some room to debate the comparison, but to suggest that it should be laughed off altogether is insanely ignorant.

Furthermore, the reason HIV was so bad was because there was so little that could be done to treat or prevent it and it spread in regions where the options that did exist were not available. There are many things that can be done to keep Covid from being that bad, and you have been wilfully rejecting them at every turn. Those that died of HIV and those they left behind would have killed to have privilege of using the options that you are voluntarily ignoring to protect themselves and the ones they left behind. Don't you fucking dare diminish that. You don't deserve to make this comparison. Covid has been kept as "mild" as it is not because it's not seriously dangerous, but because countless people have made sacrifices to keep it that way in spite of idiots like you. And you? You think it's hilarious to wear a mask on a plane and refuse to get the vaccine you're being offered at no cost, for literally no reason except clueless arrogance.

adjl posted...
They do [enjoy driving], but that doesn't mean entire cities should be designed specifically to give them that opportunity, nor should they get to ignore environmental concerns simply because it's more fun to do so. There are ways to allow for recreational driving despite pushing mass transit and self-driving options. It's just not reasonable to expect city planning to accommodate an incredibly space-inefficient hobby at the expense of everyone else getting around efficiently.

I specifically responded to you, dude.

Well, we could start by splintering the 'White' population instead of grouping them all together. I'd be curious, for example, to see a comparison of a Protestant white man vs Catholic white man vs a Jewish white man vs Episcopalian white man. I'm willing to bet there will be inequalities there as well.

Probably, but you should also break other demographics down similarly if that's the comparison you're looking to make. You've got to make sure your sample populations are as similar as possible, after all.

I like how studies often leave out women taking maternity leave when pay is brought up.

ofc someone who leaves won't advance as much as someone who doesn't

Why are women the only ones expected to take parental leave? Obviously, the actual delivery and whatnot create a medical need to take leave, but that's rarely more than a week or so unless something really goes wrong. Hardly a career-destroying vacation.

The hiv\aids epidemic killed more people. Nice try.

Let's see... Looking globally:

HIV: 36.3 million deaths since June 1981 (40.2 years)
Covid: 4.3 million deaths since November 2019 (1.8 years)

If I'm remembering properly how division works, I believe that works out to roughly 0.9 million deaths per year for HIV and 2.4 million for Covid.

Man, if only I'd considered what I was saying before I said it. Then I could have avoided this embarrassing position of having readily available statistics and basic math prove me completely right. What a bummer.

However, a commute only has so much impact on traffic.

Roads are all but entirely designed around commutes. Morning/evening rush hours represent the greatest volume of traffic a route needs to be able to handle consistently, and the vast majority of the vehicles comprising that traffic are single-occupant personal vehicles. Roads that are able to handle commuter traffic are generally pretty empty at other times.

Now, switching half of the workforce to WFH would not simply reduce traffic by half. It wouldn't affect commercial traffic, the relatively small handful of HOV's would only remove one vehicle from the road for 2-7 workers, there would still be people driving around during rush hour for non-commuting purposes (such as shopping on a day off)... That said, it would nonetheless make a huge impact on traffic.

Parking, however, improves dramatically with fewer people driving to work. Get half the workforce working from home, and you are going to see roughly half as much demand for parking space in cities, since cars being abandoned for eight hours a day is the primary driver for that demand.

Krazy_Kirby posted...
bet a self-driving car would never go over the speed limit, even on a deserted highway w/ zero other cars in sight

Oh no, you might arrive 2-5 minutes later! Such horror!

In practice, with self-driving cars dominating and defining how society drives, blanket speed limits wouldn't really be a thing. AI's are capable of assessing the safest maximum speed for a given situation much better than humans are, as well as being able to handle themselves at higher speeds than humans can (by virtue of having vastly faster reflexes). Toss in the ability to communicate with each other to identify the need to slow down long before it's actually seen, plus the elimination of traffic lights and other such controls, and you'll generally see faster travel times in an autonomous system than in one where you're held back by our slow monkey brains.
