It makes enough sense. There are plenty of games out there (especially competitive ones) that become vastly more fun (and, in some cases, only become fun) once you get past the initial learning curve, so having some advice to get past that will ultimately make the game more enjoyable.

I've got a reasonable grasp of how to make use of logic gates and whatnot, I just struggle with some of the vanilla transmission mechanics because they're so unintuitive. Vertical signal transmission in particular makes very little sense. I much prefer to include mods that offer some manner of wiring system, like Redpower used to (which also condense logic gates into single tiles).

Incidentally, calling them "one of the most vaccinated countries" isn't altogether accurate.

They're sitting at #25 for first doses and #20 for fully vaxxed (by comparison, the US is at #36 and #34, respectively). That's not bad, and they're clearly doing better than many other places, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

Globally? I could imagine. There are enough McDonald's franchises that I have no difficulty imagining that at least one of them has a given problem on any given day.

EclairReturns posted...
Are you saying that the cost to replace these ice cream machines would outweigh the profit gained from selling the frozen items that McDonald's would be able to sell if it could produce aforementioned items with reliable consistency? Or perhaps the net profit gained would not be considered significant by the franchise's figurative overlords if any such measures were taken?

I could believe that it would. McD's isn't exactly using super high-quality ingredients for their ice cream, but any dairy products tend to have lower margins because dairy ingredients are relatively expensive and it takes energy-hungry equipment that requires significant amounts of maintenance (=labour costs) to produce them. Toss in that it's relatively rare for people to go into McDonald's just for ice cream, meaning they'll likely still be selling some higher-margin items to customers even if they can't give them ice cream, and I can believe that they don't actually lose enough when the machine's down to justify replacing it with something more reliable.

It's still good to have the machine around so there's the possibility of getting ice cream (meaning people will consider McD's even if they want ice cream for dessert), but once people are in the store, telling them they can't get it isn't likely to discourage them from buying the meal they were planning.

I would agree that "fitness" is too broad of a concept to describe as a hobby. The individual activities that make it up would qualify (including the theorycraft part of it), but not the overall concept.

Think of it in terms of usefully answering the question "what are your hobbies?". Saying "fitness" doesn't actually inform the person you're talking to what things you enjoy doing. I get where you're coming from, in that many of the activities that you do for fun all under the umbrella of fitness, but you need to be more specific in order to give a useful answer to the question. Following up something like "I'm a fitness nut" with ": I spend a lot of time lifting weights, min/maxing my health, and telling people on the Internet about it" would be a valid response, but not just leaving it at "fitness."

I think the problem with this is that those freedoms are implied to be contingent on getting vaccinated. According to the values the US is founded on the constitution should be enough to ensure those freedoms.

Personal freedoms have always been and must always be restricted by the effects that freedom will have on other people. There's no reason to treat vaccination any differently: If restricting unvaccinated people is the only way to ensure that everyone else can go about their lives in safety and freedom, unvaccinated people should be restricted.

Perfect, libertarian anarchy will never be anything more than a fantasy or thought experiment.

By and large, nobody's really hating on people who genuinely can't get vaccinated. Exceptions exist, of course, because there are no limits to the depths of human stupidity, but the vast majority (and the only justifiable portion) of the hate is directed at the unvaccinated that are making that choice out of ignorance or a callous disregard for their fellow citizens, not those that have legitimate reasons for avoiding it. That's especially true where you did get vaccinated, and are just choosing to forego a booster due to the clear personal risk involved. You've made a genuine effort to contribute your fair share to the public's well-being (at more personal cost than most face in doing so), and I don't think anyone should be asking more than that of you.

I don't know about any specific timeline, but yeah, the deaths of seemingly unrelated species can have cascading, catastrophic consequences on ecosystems. In practice, I'd say it's the temperature of the oceans that we need to be more concerned about than direct killing of any specific species, though. That's what stands the highest risk of causing algal blooms/crashes that kill off local aquatic life and throw off food chains considerably. That also risks disrupting or even outright shutting down the major ocean currents, which presents other major problems for biodiversity.

Will everything be dead in 2048? Probably not. Are things in a position to get very, very bad, very quickly if we don't change how we approach marine conservation and climate change? Yes.

"the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself" -Franklin D. Roosevelt

Historically concern for public safety is abandoned when personal freedom is denied. In order to protect public safety it is necessary to safe guard personal freedom before people feel that it has gotten to that point.

Personal freedom has literally never been taken to that extreme, nor can it without causing a complete collapse of society. Do you get uppity about your freedoms being infringed whenever you see a stop sign? Of course not, because that would be stupid. Do you complain when people get arrested for shooting at people? Of course not, because that would be stupid. This is also stupid. Stop being stupid.

There will always be room to argue about whether the public safety benefit in any given instance outweighs the harm of the associated infringements on personal liberty, but categorically saying that personal freedom should never be limited for the sake of public safety is so insanely idiotic that no self-respecting person should ever even consider saying that. If you want to take that position here without being stupid about it, you're going to have to argue that requiring people to wear masks to shop is worse - in a practical sense - than risking death for the people around them. Good luck, because that's very obviously not something that can be justified objectively.

I'm actually making a note of this. I like the sound of it.

The only major considerations are that it isn't hardy enough to stand up to really high traffic (though, really, grass suffers for that too), and if the whole lawn is clover instead of a mix, you may need to reseed parts of it every few years. That, and you may need the occasional mow if you don't want the flowers or want to get rid of them more quickly after they wilt, but that happens much less frequently than for grass. Clover lawns are very much growing in popularity these days because they're just so much more reasonable to use as ground cover than grass. Sedum is another option that's getting more popular (also low-water, zero-maintenance, similar look), but it's less ideal because it doesn't stand up well to foot traffic (it's a succulent and breaks easily, though the broken bits will root just as easily so it recovers pretty quickly).

Plenty of landscaping companies also offer their own blends of ground cover that will work for different lawn needs. If you're interested in alternatives, it's worthwhile to shop around. There are so many better things you can do than grass, and enough growing demand for those options that suppliers are responding.

Doesnt that depend on the lengths they go, though?

It's obviously worse to be super-neurotic about lawns and mow them every day and whatnot than to maintain one more sensibly, and it's much less destructive to maintain a lawn in, say, England than in California (it's almost like the practice was imported or something), but whatever the conditions and how excessive your maintenance practices are, maintaining grass is pretty much always going to be more destructive than alternatives (other than paving the whole thing). Whether it's water costs, energy/emissions costs, or simply the opportunity cost of not filling that land with something pollinator-friendly or otherwise more beneficial to the local environment, grass is worse than pretty much any other organic alternative.

Contrary to popular belief - yards are not that costly to maintain. Roughly 30% of water user for the average household is devoted to watering the lawn which sounds like a big deal until you figure out that ALL water usage for lawns (residential, business, and municipal) is using about 6% of the total water consumption in my state at least and I live in a desert. That's including the inefficiencies, people watering at stupid times of the day, etc.

So you could potentially save a whopping 30% of 6% (1.8%) of water usage in a desert state by converting every bit of grass to rocks.

I'm not quite sure how that math is supposed to work. 30% of household water usage is 30% of household water usage (which is indeed huge; if 30% is allocated to lawn maintenance, the remaining top 3 water consumers of showers, laundry, and toilets are all going to be less than that). That it only amounts to 6% of state water usage (which is also huge for a single item, especially a single item that's so unnecessary) is more a reflection of how much greater non-household water usage (mostly agriculture) is than household. There's no reason to multiply those together.

Furthermore, as many people have said, nobody's suggesting the whole lawn should be turned into rocks. Just that a giant field of grass is largely useless and substantially better things (that aren't just rocks) could be done with the land.

Also, lawns absorb heat (which extends to your home and reduces the need for AC). Lawns absorb CO2. And they're better at preventing soil erosion than its counterparts.

Pretty much any plant can make all of those claims, and do so better than grass can. Clover in particular absorbs more heat (by virtue of being a darker colour), yields more net CO2 absorption (by not growing high enough to warrant mowing and therefore not producing nearly as much biomass that's destined to decompose), and forms a stronger root structure that's better for preventing erosion. All while also using less water, naturally outcompeting weeds to negate the need for herbicides or manual weeding (which causes more soil erosion by disturbing root structures), and self-fertilizing.

I would prefer my kids to stay in my yard to play with their friends. Or at the very least a neighbors/their friends yard at least while they're young. I also don't want to have to take my dog to the dog park every time they want to go out and play.

There are plenty of alternatives to grass that are just as good for play areas. Pure clover isn't quite hardy enough to handle really high traffic, but many better options exist.

People that don't want lawns can buy a house that doesn't have a lawn.

It's less a matter of not wanting a lawn and more a matter of not wanting so much land to be wasted on harmful, useless grass lawns. There's plenty of benefit to having the space for a lawn, just not filling it with grass.

I'm saying people are allowed to care about appearances and you of all people should get that.

Caring about appearances to the point that one maintains a grass lawn instead of something vastly less destructive, however, is destructive and should be condemned as such.

How the hell is this 'uplifting'?
If anything, it's sad that more Americans are being dependent on them

It's an increase to the benefits themselves, not just to the amount being budgeted for them. It's really just acknowledging that food is more expensive now and making sure being on food stamps is still enough to feed recipients. That's a positive thing.

Why both?

I just got the two doses of Pfizer

It's what they had available when bookings opened up for my age group. I didn't really have a preference, so I just took the first available options.

If he catches it and has no symptoms like a lot of the other politicians seem to get it just makes them believe it more.

Or in Trump's case, "It's no big deal! He recovered just fine! We're just going to ignore that it took $10 million in cutting-edge medical treatments to pull that off, which we paid for!"

You wear a mask even though you're vaccinated? Are you unsure the vaccination works?

Mask mandates are still in effect here, given that it's exceedingly impractical to verify vaccination status and case numbers don't support the conclusion that there's no further risk (provincial case numbers are near-zero, but that can change very quickly). I have every reason to believe that the vaccination will prevent me from becoming seriously ill if I do get infected, but that doesn't mean I'm going to resist an added layer of protection, both for myself and for anyone around me that might be at higher risk (especially where Delta in particular seems to be pretty good at causing breakthrough cases).

Cool assumption

Are you vaccinated (specifically for Covid, though I suppose the topic doesn't specify that)?

Then that sounds to me like a case of false advertising.

Not really. No vaccine has ever been or will ever be 100% effective. There's no reason to expect that these vaccines would be an exception to that.

I hope everyone is wearing a mask.

Sitting at home? That'd be pretty pointless. Whenever I go to any public indoor space? Of course I am. I'd have to be an idiot not to.

Why are you posting in this topic? That's a clear violation of the rules.
