You'll need to quote the words that you interpret as "downplaying". I've just watched the video you linked to, and I'm not hearing what you seem to be hearing to make you think that.

She's insistent that because of their historical experiences black people define race differently, i.e. primarily by skin colour, and that from a black perspective, Jews are white and not a race apart; and she's clearly not backing down from that position. But there's no hint that she's denying the Nazis targeted the Jews for extermination specifically because of their Jewishness: she says the issue was "ethnicity" (rather than race), which forced the Nazis to work harder to identify members of the chosen target group. (Which might have been true in Germany but not in Poland or the USSR, because of the higher degree of segregation; but I doubt Goldberg knew that.) Nor did she question the numbers, nor the monstrosity of the killings.

Discourse on race in America today is framed overwhelmingly in terms of black and white. Why is it so surprising that Goldberg might crudely define race, and racism, by skin colour alone, seeing as it's what most other people do?

A lot of voices have called very loudly for her to be sacked. I'm saying that would be disproportionate.

The suspension was maybe deserved; but a misinterpretation of "race" without doubting that the Holocaust happened, without questioning its scale and scope, without minimizing its horrors or its evil, without obfuscating that Jews were murdered simply for being Jews, without implying there was anything that could conceivably have justified the atrocities, is not a sacking offence.

She said none of those things. She said it wasn't about race. As ScazarMeltex and Prestoff have pointed out: in saying that, she seems to be simplistically conflating skin colour with race. But it's still perfectly possible for someone to understand the Nazi Judeocide as the selective targeting of a distinct people, chosen as victims specifically because of their Jewish identity. It's a murky understanding that misses the point, but it doesn't deny the Jewishness of the victims or that they were murdered because they were Jews.

From what I've read of the interviews and her apologies, she hasn't yet said anything that could reasonably be interpreted as trivializing, excusing, relativizing, or downplaying either the scale or horror of the Holocaust or blaming the victims in any way.

All she seems to have done is to wrongheadedly mischaracterize it as "not being about race" simply because there were no genuine "racial" differences between killer and victim (if it wasn't "really" about race, it was definitely about racism), and apparently tried to universalize its meaning by folding it into "man's inhumanity to man".

Can anyone point to comments she's previously made about the Holocaust which would indicate this is part of a pattern of wilful misunderstanding? If not, then the suspension might have been deserved on the grounds of dumbassery that you can't and shouldn't give a free pass to -- but a sacking, no.

Look, just because the government spent billions on failed covid efforts for known faulty products doesn't mean we have to hold them accountable and ask why many of these failed companies had connections to Tory MPs.

I know I'm a bit of a jaded old cynic, but in this case I'm prepared to cut them some slack and accept the "honestly, it was just one weird, massive coincidence after another" explanation because it just seems so persuasive.

I think most players have a firm opinion on how they like certain characters to look, and I suspect many male gamers prefer a female character to be enjoyable to look at. Simple as that, really.

You're missing the point. The point here is what the school board in McMinn County, Tennessee, does or does not censor. I'm betting that some conservative school boards are more stringent than others (or emphasize different red flags than others), so what may be allowed in one may not necessarily be allowed in another.

What's at issue isn't whether or not censorship per se is OK, or whether or not the McMinn County school board is being ridiculously prudish (which clearly it is).

What's at issue is: is the McMinn Country school board making a special case out of Maus, and banning it for reasons that they don't routinely apply to other books? Or are they simply being consistent with their own silly, prudish (but long-established) policies on what can and cannot be used in class, and there's nothing necessarily sinister or neo-Nazi conspiratorial about all this? In other words, is the real beef that they're failed to make a rule-breaking exception for Maus?

I don't know what the answer to the questions are, but they should at least be asked. If you believe that Maus deserves an exception because of its subject matter and that the board's decision should be reconsidered, that's a legitimate viewpoint. But smearing school board members as literal Nazis for failing to consider making one -- I don't believe that's legitimate.

I checked out a lot worse books from my middle school library. Shit in sixth grade I did a book report on Crichton's Rising Sun. It had a lot more language and sex than Maus ever did.

Yeah, but would you be able to find it in a school library in McMinn County? That's the kind of question that needs to be asked and answered before everyone runs around complaining that the school board is singling out Maus by holding it to a ridiculously high standard that doesn't get applied to other books within the board's purview.

When she tells you that you're beautiful, but then she puts her hand over her mouth and mutters "... on the inside...", that's the warning sign you've got to look out for.

His symptoms are usually under control if he can keep his infusions in order like he needs to, but for whatever reason, his insurance has fought him a few times over it and it's gotten worse during those times, :/

I don't know if this is of any comfort, but it's sometimes possible to be in remission for years or at least for relapses to be localised. I think relapses may be worse when you're younger.

Having read a little more about the comments during the interview and her apologies, I think she was just mind-numbingly inept at articulating what she wanted to convey.

What she seems to have wanted to convey is that people will invent any absurd fiction to justify monstrous behaviour towards other groups of people. For her, because it's self-evidently absurd that Jews constituted a separate race, it meant the Holocaust wasn't "really" about race after all -- because Nazi racial theories were built on lies. Maybe I'm being charitable, but that's the hint I'm getting from her words.

But again, the point: even if race might not be real, racism is. It's not necessary for something to be an objective biological fact in order for someone to believe wholeheartedly that it is, and to build policies and practices upon that belief -- and commit horrific crimes in its name.

Most atheists, for example, wouldn't be so stupid as to say that religious conflicts aren't really religious conflicts after all, on account of sectarian differences being artificial and meaningless because God does not, in fact exist.

I think the worst that she's guilty of so far is hairsplitting, nitpicking, and failing to see the wood for the trees. The suspension was maybe necessary but I don't think sacking is.
